About the Author
Robert Anson Heinlein was born in Missouri in 1907, and was raised there. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1929, but was forced by illness to retire from the Navy in 1934. He settled in California and over the next five years held a variety of jobs while doing post-graduate work in mathematics and physics at the University of California. In 1939 he sold his first science fiction story to Astounding magazine and soon devoted himself to the genre.He was a four-time winner of the Hugo Award for his novels Stranger in a Strange Land (1961), Starship Troopers (1959), Double Star (1956), and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (1966). His Future History series, incorporating both short stories and novels, was first mapped out in 1941. The series charts the social, political, and technological changes shaping human society from the present through several centuries into the future.Robert A. Heinlein's books were among the first works of science fiction to reach bestseller status in both hardcover and paperback. He continued to work into his eighties, and his work never ceased to amaze, to entertain, and to generate controversy. The novel itself is one of my all-time favorites.EDITORS, PROOFREADERS, OR ANYONE IN CHARGE OF THE KINDLE EDITION:I will proofread and correct your Kindle edition for free. I am a professional technical writer, editor, and professor.The Kindle edition is so full of errors it is difficult to read. It's not the occasional flub caused by scanning and then converting an old file, something like a missing apostrophe. The Kindle edition has numerous errors, many of them serious enough to confuse the reader. Character names are misspelled. Sentences are lacking end punctuation.I say this as a fan of Heinlein's book: you have injured a classic SF novel. You have, quite frankly, reduced the quality of the work through lack of proofreading. I am not some grammar pedant who has identified a single error or two and would like everyone to know about my erudition. I know that today's publishing market moves fast and the margins are thin. I loved this book when I first read it, which was back when it was first published. Unfortunately, when I decided to go down memory lane, and re-read it. I discovered that the ending of the book has been edited. I remember what I read. And I remember very clearly that there is another chapter to this book which has been removed. I don't want to spoil this for any new readers, so I am not going to tell you what is missing. But if Amazon contacts me, I will give them a piece of my mind I am a frugal senior citizen on a very fixed budget. The fact that I paid full price for a book I already read indicates that it was a good book. I am furious about the omission of the real ending. Frankly, I can't understand how, or why it was done. Didn't anyone else complain? To any new readers, perhaps you should buy the hard copy. My guess is that it would be complete. As for me. It has been a couple weeks since I've read this, and I find that I am still angry.
I read this novel originally when it was first published. I have been on a "journey" to reread Heinlein's novels again since I am older (and hopefully, wiser). I was not disappointed. It was as fresh as when I read it the first time. And I may read it again.This novel is often referred to as the 2nd book in the Lazarus Long Series (Methuselah's Children, Time Enough For Love, The Number of the Beast, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls and To Sail Beyond the Sunset). Lazarus Long (nee Woodrow Wilson Smith) is the longest living member of the Howard Families. The book includes numerous short stories/tales as told by Lazarus through Justin Foote (Chief Archivist) and also includes a number of his "saying" (collected in another book as well.) Stories in the book are about events that take place after Methuselah's Children. And one about meeting his mother (and himself). It is fun, amazing, sad, and enlightening.If you have enjoyed Heinlein's Future History novels, you will probably enjoy this one as well.
This book is a special favorite of mine. I have read it several times. The major element of fantasy is that the hero Lazarus Long lives many lifetimes of an ordinary person. The initial story line is that Lazarus is going through the process of rejuvenation. Not his choice. He intended to die. But he was kept alive to tell his story becuase he had lived so long, in the hope that his long life might provide lessons to others about how to live better. Eventually he accepts life and moves forward to a new life. Subplots: Intelligent computers, one of whom becomes a woman, disagreements about what he should do with his rejuvenatted life, but he is cloned to give him two females whom he raises, time travel to his birth family where he falls in love and has sex with his mother, enjoys and has problems interesting with his grandfather, sees and interacts with himself as a young child, goes off to war in the First World War and is killed and brought back to life, helps found a colony on a new planet, and many more. I really enjoyed this fantasy, although I know at my age there is not too much time left for me to live. I really like reading Robert Heinlein's novels, but I think this is one of his best. I very highly recommend it to anyone who lifes Heinlein's work. . .
I first read this book when originally published 45 years ago when I as in my 20's. It significantly contributed to my political views, which had already fallen under the influence of authors such as Heinlein. And I then also thoroughly enjoyed the stories. I still find the stories exceptionally enjoyable even though I now take exception to some details of the political positions espoused.But I must agree with customer reviewer Peter England that the proofreading problems are particularly egregious, even in comparison with the weak standards typical of e-books. A classic such as this deserves better. Amazon is sufficiently profitable to show some artistic pride in its products and to hire a competent proofreader to revise this wonderful book.Notwithstanding these proofreading and political philosophy issues, still easily worth five stars.
