Review

"A fascinating biography on a true Hollywood legend. There's plenty to dig into, with inspiring stories that humanize the iconic actor. A must for any classic film lover!" - Alicia Malone, Turner Classic Movies "A fun read and an invaluable resource. Letitia's book stands as one ofthe only first-hand accounts of silent film's great superstar." -Tracey Goessel, Fairbanks biographer

From the Author

A note to scholars, from the editorRalph Hancock and Letitia Fairbanks Smoot were of the same mind when they began this biography in 1951. They believed that Doug's story could best be conveyed as he told it in his life, augmented by Letitia's own memories of her uncle and with explanations and details that were absent from the glossy PR pieces of the day.As a framework, they drew upon the wealth of publicity generated by the Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation and United Artists. I know this because I found many of these articles when I researched Ralph's collection at his alma mater, the University of Oregon in Eugene.    Included in his literary file was an account of every researcher's nightmare. At first, Ralph had set out to write a biography of Fairbanks alone. Then, in1950, after two years of work, his car was stolen. Ralph's entire set of notes and research were stowed in the trunk, so his work was forever lost. After this devastating blow, he was introduced to Letitia through friends who thought they might tackle the book together. The result was the first full-length biography to be written about Fairbanks after his death in 1939.   The theft of research materials helps explain why, when Fairbanks and Pickford chronicler Booten Herndon asked Ralph about a discrepancy in the 1970s, Ralph told him, "If you have a different version, I'd advise you to go with it." In the "Commentary on Sources" at the end of Herndon's Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks: The Most Popular Couple the World Has Known(1977), Herndon describes how Letitia responded to his queries. "Letitia Fairbanks Smoot, daughter of Robert and the family historian, repeated or corrected and augmented much of The Fourth Musketeer." I suspect that this process was much the same during the 1950s when Letitia worked with Ralph to create this book. Ralph did the writing, and Letitia went over it, correcting and adding pertinent details.  Without Eileen Whitfield's early commitment to this project, it is doubtful others would have signed on. I am also deeply indebted to the dedicated staff at the Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. They are consummate archivists and researchers, dedicated to ensuring that everyone who helped make the movies has a chance to be studied through their inventory.Additionally, Fairbanks researcher extraordinaire Tracey Goessel and Fritzi Kramer of Movies, Silently provided critical details and helped decipher photos and handwritten notes. Finally, noted film author and historian, agent, and all-around great guy Michael Troyan - born, like Doug, on May 23rd! - helped make my dream of re-publication a reality.   But as always, the story of The Fourth Musketeer begins and ends with the Fairbanks family members who have so generously shared their memories and collectibles, especially Dominick, grandson to Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and Fairbanks Jr.'s widow Vera. This re-publication simply would not have happened without their steadfast commitment and help.   Kelley Smoot

This book is co-authored by Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s niece, Letitia Fairbanks, and is the definitive source for all the other biographies of Douglas Fairbanks that followed, especially his childhood and adolescence. Who else but a family member would know the details that Letitia and her co-author Ralph Hancock have incorporated? First rate biography, well-written, and well worth reading.

Douglas Fairbanks by Ralph Hancock & Leticia Fairbanks is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early January.Letitia’s storytelling comes off darn near legendary, even hallowed with a campfire/klieg glow. The use of photographs is impressive and informative, but usually doesn’t match with the tale being told on that page. On the outset, without prior knowledge of who Douglas Fairbanks is, it seems like he’s masculine, easily the center of attention within any group of people, yarnful, roving, and into parkour; the likes of which can’t quite be re-accomplished, even in modern-day Hollywood. As the book goes on (quite enjoyably, I might add), you learn that he has the ability to fall asleep instantly when laying down, has a natural tan, had been married for seven years to Beth Sully before meeting Mary Pickford, is involved in very physical, stunt-filled films, marries, then has a really arduous, crowded honeymoon in Europe, not sporting his famed mustache until 1921, Mary & Doug having the first signatures and handprints at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, hosts athletes at his home during the 1932 L.A. Olympics, and spending the latter part of his life with the overriding theme of feeling as though fame and life has passed him by, despite having wealth and the love of his friends, fans, and family.

This annversary edition is a must have for anyone interested in Douglas Fairbanks. Originally published in the 1950’s this new edition is quite simply luscious and beautifully put together. The images are curated with care and take you through Fairbanks from birth to his untimely passing in 1939. The layout of the book is quite simply magnificent and you get to see rare photos and rare items like the spreads showing the deluxe programs for Robin Hood (1922) and The Thief of Bagdad (1924) when Fairbanks was at his peak both physically and artistically. The original text is now illustrated with a myriad of rare images, many not previously published, or not published since the 1920's. It is a visual feast. Absolutely beautiful.

My oldest daughter is 7.5, and she read the Ivan novel over the summer. She thoroughly enjoyed it, and so when I saw that an Ivan picture book would be coming out, I preordered it. I did not tell my daughter, so she was pleasantly surprised by the book's arrival a couple of days ago. This picture book is not narrated by Ivan, which is a shame, because Ivan had such a unique voice and a wry sense of humor. Rather, this is a biography about Ivan the gorilla, from his infancy in Africa amongst the other gorillas, his capture by poachers and subsequent arrival in America, his childhood as a "human", his internment at the shopping mall, and finally, his new life at the zoo in Atlanta. The prose is light and airy, but it also has emotional depth. It conveys information about Ivan's life in an engaging and evocative manner. One part that struck me was that Ivan had been "ordered and paid for, like a couple of pizzas, like a pair of shoes."The illustrations by G. Brian Karas are phenomenal. I have enjoyed his work in other books, and I love the way he has brought Ivan's world to life.My daughter had some objections to details in the picture book that differed from those found in the novel. I explained the concept of "artistic license" to her, and she seemed satisfied with that.I think this picture book is a fine companion to the Ivan novel. It makes Ivan's story accessible to children on a lower reading level than the level of novel.I would absolutely recommend this book to others.

We found this book because my son received the book The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate as a gift last year. He loved that book, so I got him this one for Christmas. Such a sad beginning with a happy ending. My son loves elephants best, and we originally got him The One and Only Ivan because of the elephant in the story - this story made him love gorillas too. Well-written with wonderful pictures. A very worthwhile addition to your library!

Wonderful story for my first graders. Promotes empathy and not being a "bystander" for those who do not have a voice. My students LOVED this book and you can access Ivan's photo's online. Websites are printed in the book and I used the Smartboard to show them. I had parents calling me to ask about the "Ivan" book!!

A beautiful story book for any child or adult touched by the life of Ivan. My younger son read the original book on Ivan and cried and loved it so much I had to get this for him and so glad I did. Beautiful book. Short read but loved the artwork, the real photos of Ivan and the personal story at the end. A must!!!

Wonderful book! I bought a stuffed gorilla to go along with the books as Christmas gifts. The story is well told and explains Ivan's life and impact that it made on our view of how we used to treat captured animals. Wonderful job on the author's part. I can only hope that the individuals I bought them for will actually read them!

I ordered this book for a dear friend that has helped me out on more than one occasion. My children and I had the chapter book version this one and just love it so I knew my sweet friends kiddos would love this one just as much. Great book!

This is an adorable book. It was part of my son's school's One School One Book program, and was required summer reading. My son thoroughly enjoyed the book and as part of his summer projects chose this one to act out with his cousins.

This book could be for an adult or anyone that is old enough to read. It was entertaining and I could picture it actually being Ivan, whom I loved visiting, but I was happy for him when they moved him to the Atlanta Zoo. I would recommend this book to anyone from 12 to 112 years old. Carol

Review

“. . . Several fascinating and rare examples included in A History of America in 100 Maps. Any one may make readers rethink what they know about how the nation came to be.” (Wall Street Journal)"Lavish and fascinating." (Economist)"Maps often capture history much more economically than any narrative. This is Schulten’s premise, which she supports by offering 100 cartographic snapshots of America from the European arrival to the digital age." (New York Times)"Anyone who loves history, or maps, or American culture should read this book, from cover to cover. It is indeed a fabulous ride." (The Portolan)

Very limited historically, because the author used the British Museum as it only source it seems.Important Portuguese, Dutch etc, maps and settlements absent, which is important considering English settlements at the time in Jamestown and Plymouth were abject failures.A visit to the many museums and libraries in New York State would have been helpful for starters.Hardly a "History of America"

Beautiful maps and accompanying explanations walk the reader through a chronological journey of the US. This book is a welcome addition to our coffee table and has been quite the conversation piece! It is a beautiful book, you won't be disappointed.

American history bored me in high school. Had I access to this book, I certainly would have understood and appreciated far more of the arc of American history. Read it with a magnifying glass at hand. Apropos that, I downloaded a sample of the Kindle version, which, if the maps were high resolution, zoomable pdfs, I would have on my iPad now. Unfortunately, they get pixillated with only modest magnification. A minor complaint, which, if addressed in the second edition, would likely sell more copies.

If you like maps and you enjoy reading history, you will love this book too!

Good looking book. Looks expensive. Would make a nice gift.

If you like maps and U.S. history, you'll love this book. The one page summaries associated with each map contribute much to the value of this book. I strongly recommend it.

Some great old maps I've never seen before. My HS aged students like seeing how people have used maps in the past - to get from A to B isn't the only purpose!

I must confess that I am a map geek and there are some really terrific historical maps in Denver University Professor Susan Schulten’s book of 100 maps. I especially liked the maps portraying the slave trade, the Anglo-French rivalry over North America in the 1700s, the 1823 map that made manifest destiny so evident 20 years before the phrase was coined, Sherman’s use of census maps to plan his march through Georgia, Harlem nightlife in the 1930s, the 1961 Freedom Rides and Disneyland. My problem with her book is what she leaves out, her negative characterizations of industry and she is way too equivalent with to the Cold War. To me any map book on the history of America would have to include three maps on the wiring of America. Specifically the electrical, telephonic and internet grids. The same holds true for the expansion of the railroads. Her comment on the railroads largely follows the populist narrative not how the strategic vision of Abraham Lincoln bound the nation with the Pacific Railway Act. It is obvious to me that she is not familiar with Robert Gordon’s now classic “The Rise and Fall of American Growth.”With respect to the Cold War she views it more as a big power rivalry rather than in Ronald Reagan’s words a fight against “the focus of evil in the modern world.”We were the good guys. She soft pedals the role of Soviet agents in the counsels of government by calling them “a few civil servants in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations.” I don’t think Alger Hiss at State and Harry Dexter White at Treasury viewed themselves as cogs in the bureaucracy. Those criticisms aside, there is much to be learned from Susan Schulten’s book. Look at the maps and read the commentary with a critical eye.

Ansible is not a very complex package to use, but there isn't a good online tutorial with enough details. That's why there are actually quite a few books on Ansible out there. Some are outdated, some have good reviews but don't progress logically. This little book by Michael Heap turns out to be the best intro to Ansible at this time. The main reason is, as another reviewer pointed out, the book progresses logically.A caveat: I have read/watched some tutorials on Ansible before, so I was able to push through the few typos/outdated commands in the book. If this is your first try, don't be discouraged. One of the reviewer said he was able to get help from the author by contacting him. But if you are an experienced programmer, you probably can figure things out yourself, because Ansible's error messages will likely point you to the right direction.I don't review products I bought very often, but I found it unfair to this little gem that it has such a low average score here. So here are my five stars.

People don't realize it but books aren't always presented after publication, the way the author intended. In this case, yes there are some confusing components encountered in Chapter 3, BUT I reached out to the author himself for help and he worked with me until it was fixed. It all amounted to a few bad line breaks, that were simply a product of publication. Not the author's fault and certainly no big deal! How ole' two star buddy below figured he could review a book after getting stuck on the third chapter is a mystery to me. My experience with the book has been great and my experience with the author, even better. Buy this book!

The book is basically a giant human-readable script asking you to copy-paste a bunch of crypto text into various files. It has a few errors in it and not much is explained or detailed. But still, it does better than what has become the norm for technical books these days and if you are a googler and used to reading public docs, then I think you will get by. One reading this book to get a first "hands-on experience" with Ansible will probably find it useful. However, I failed to proceed beyond chapter 3. Chapter 3, again, ask you to copy-paste a huge NGINX configuration file. This can not be copy-pasted as is of course because the author expends no energy properly tackling weird line breaks. You will have to figure that out yourself, many times throughout the book. But, no matter how much I fiddled around with the configuration file, I couldn't get NGINX to accept it. He whined about "invalid number of arguments in 'location' directive". Since it appears that the rest of the chapters in this book build on the work you do in chapter 3, you're pretty much screwed. So pay for the book only if you find that a completely dumbed-down introduction to Ansible over the course of three chapters is worth it.

It well structured as it starts with simple concepts while creating a set of playbooks that evolve with each chapter. The real world example, in this case, Wordpress, made it easier to understand what we were aiming to achieve.I've got the 2016 kindle version.

Chaotic. If you dont have a previous Ansible background it will be useless.Chapter on Variables is OK.There is not really a good Ansible book on the market yet.
