Extremely informative well written book, not a puff piece but filled with substance and as one who is seriously considering joining the Episcopal Church I found it very helpful. I highly recommend this this and is a must read .

This is a simple outline of the history, structure, and core beliefs of the Episcopal Church. If you have thought about attending a service but felt unsure about the experience, read this book first. At last, I understand the differences between a rector, a vicar, and a curate and what the symbolism on the shield stands for.

A good and brief introduction to the Episcopalian Church. I was particularly struck by the three tenets of the Episcopalian Church in regards to authority, known as the three-legged stool: Scripture, tradition, and reason. I also like their view on the middle way (via medi) meaning between the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church, a happy medium if you will. Finally, I was drawn to the several ways the Episcopalian Church does church: high church, low church, broad church. High church being very ritualistic, liturgical, and traditional. Low church being very free and contemporary. And, the broad church which incorporates both the high church and low church methods.Overall, I am drawn to the Episcopalian Church, but it does seem heavily nationalistic. After all, it was formed (along with its Constitutions) at the EXACT same time the American republic was formed. It broke off from the Anglican (Church of England) in response to the American Revolution. Should not our allegiance be to King Jesus rather than President Washington or King Henry? Furthermore, the polity of the church seems very, well... polity. Heavy on church government, dioceses, parishes, bishops, and conventions. This can be a bit daunting to those of us who like room to breathe and the freedom to thrive outside the confines of the institutional church.Overall, the Episcopalian Church seems like a good fit for those of us who long for the ancient, but also want a bit of freedom. And, I recommend this short book for those who are searching for the right denominational fit, particularly to the Episcopalian Church.

This book is short, accessible, very easy to understand and relate to, and was a perfect introduction to the episcopalian denomination after beginning my process of converting from Roman Catholicism. Whenever there is a new member to the church and they have questions, this is the book that I refer them to.

I thought this would be a lot larger and more comprehensive. I was hoping to receive a very comprehensive book. This is an extremely slim, short, book, almost like a large pamphlet, if anything.

I'm taking one of Steven Brown's classes. I was initially put off by the fact that this book was written by him, but I actually have been learning a lot. I would not buy this book if you are looking for in-depth Linguistics information, but this book organizes its clear, concise information very well.

Shabazz's photographs celebrate the "cool" style of early hip-hop culture between 1980 and 1989. Though his work is firmly rooted in the tradition of urban street photography, Shabazz here shows his subjects striking a pose and staring straight into the camera. The resulting images become less documentary and more yearbook-like in style. At first viewing, the clothes and posturing seem almost ridiculous, until we remember the excesses of the 1980s. By comparing the styles and attitudes of this bygone era to contemporary hip-hop culture, Ernie Paniccioli's essay places Shabazz's photos within a historical and social context. He points out that like all fresh and honest trends, the hip-hop style has become sadly commodified and more concerned with status than substance. But in the early era presented here, the focus was never style for style's sake it was about rebellion and survival. Shabazz, who has published his photos in the Source, Vibe, and other magazines, documents his "passion for photography and his love for his people" while raising important issues of racial justice and equality. Free self-expression is communicated through hair, clothing, shoes, jewelry, and, most importantly, posturing. Jamel Shabazz is the author of Back in the Days (powerHouse Books, 2001) and The Last Sunday in June (powerHouse Books, 2003). His photographs have appeared in publications including The Source, Vibe, TRACE, Flaunt, Mass Appeal, Jalouse, Black Book, OneWorld, and Honey. Shabazz’s work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Kravets/Wehby Gallery, New York; by Kangol at the Dazed & Confused Gallery, London; by adidas and Lodown at adidas Originals, Berlin; and in Trace’s True Signs, Paris. His debut book, Back in the Days, has received astounding critical acclaim and commercial success since its initial release in January 2001. I love this book. It actually had people that I grew up with. It brings me back to the days of the 80's and the early 90's era.

A great wander down memory lane for those who went through their wonder years in the late 70's through early 80's. I just wish this retrospective was longer! Regardless, anyone interested in the early years of urban/hip-hop fashion will enjoy it.

However, I've only got one issue with the book - where's all the Puerto Rican and white people? Two PR's and one white guy in the whole book? Come on. This is New York we're talking about here.I grew up in Park Slope Brooklyn in the 80's.. remember downtown BK, Cobble Hill, South Brooklyn, Red Hook - the hip hop/graffiti/breaking culture was very diverse and the scene reflected that. Just take a look at "Style Wars".This book is a great peek at who and what the culture was, but it's far from the whole story. More like a slice.

You have to cop this for your collection. The visuals are great.. it takes you back to a fading era. I remember the stripped lees and suede pumas.
