I also thought it was interesting that a couple of reviewers very familiar with Outlander pointed out the suspiciously obvious "borrowings" from what Claire did by Anne Gallagher in this book.I read a great deal of historical fiction, enough to recognize good research, the author’s immersion in the daily fabric of the particular period, his or her faithfulness to the political, social, economic, and religious attitudes of the day, and the assiduous avoidance of anachronisms. So when historical novels are done well, they are mesmerizing—and informative.What the Wind Knows is not historical fiction, alas, but a historical romance using the 1921 uprisings in Ireland as a backdrop, and a heavy-handed time-travel trope to get the female protagonist from her 21st century NYC milieu to the required Irish setting so she can act out a rather convoluted and often unbelievable relationship that was apparently crucial to her dying grandfather. Thus the history took a backseat to “Love is the Answer,” although plenty of Yeats quotes were scattered about like birdseed in an attempt to make this tale appear to be on a higher level. I was not misled, however.I will say that most of the details of the uprisings were accurate, as were descriptions of the various Irish locales. Those details, unfortunately, were shoehorned in, dumped, and stuffed often without appearing natural and usually disrupting the plot’s forward motion. There was a nice mix of historical figures moving briefly through the pages with the fictional ones, for the most part seamlessly.Many reviewers have practically swooned over the quality of the writing, bestowing all sorts of adjectives on the prose, of which “beautiful” seems to be the most prominent. I agree that occasionally the prose is original, striking, and imaginative. For the most part, however, I thought the author tried too hard to be both literary and unique, and as a result, the prose bordered on mauve, if not outright purple. Several times I felt the writing—and the story itself—was emotionally manipulative, reaching too hard and too far into the reader’s heartstrings to produce a reaction. While it apparently succeeded with the majority of reviewers here, I prefer to have a well-crafted novel produce whatever emotions I might feel when reading honestly, without guile or striving toward a particular goal. Thus all that romance, grief, mourning, fear, love, caring, angst, and everything else tossed at us from the Prologue to the end left me unmoved because of the obviousness of it all.I almost quit reading after the Prologue because of the already apparent overwriting. Anne and her dying grandfather talk endlessly to each other, but the dialogue tags are never the plain, unobtrusive “said,” letting the words and any action show us what is happening and how these two characters are feeling. No, we get literally one after the other ad infinitum “murmured,” “soothed,” “contended,” “confessed,” “proposed,” “pressed,” and so on. I stopped counting the times in the first chapter that Anne told her grandfather Eoin she didn’t know how she could go on without him, how many times they argued in oddly literary dialogue about going to Ireland, and why. In other words, the central themes that the wind allegedly knows everyone’s story since the beginning of time, the necessity of going to Ireland to right some sort of wrong, and repair an ancient relationship that was apparently doomed were discussed and dissected to death in less than 25 pages. I was bored with it all, which is not good at the beginning of a rather lengthy tale.Once again I’m in the minority, but then perhaps that is a result of my age, innate cynicism, demand for truth in advertising regarding books, and refusal to be manipulated by purple prose. On the other hand, I can easily see the reasons for all the praise.By the way, if you’re going to quote Yeats’s poetry at the beginning of your chapters, it is always a good idea to avoid obvious typos in those quotes.

5+++ Stars!!!!!This book has ruined me for all other books! I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened and my poor heart! How can it ache SO GOOD and SO BAD?! This was a beautiful story of love, loss, family and patriotism with one of the most unique storylines and had me feeling EVERYTHING!The concept of time travel has always fascinated me but it is certainly a difficult topic to get perfectly right, whether in movies or books. Many times there are inconsistencies and plot holes. Not in this book. Amy Harmon got it right. I mean she NAILED it! I honestly had no idea how perfect it was until the very end. The author carries us on a spectacular time travel journey filled with love and loss. It was like a puzzle that you were trying to solve piece by piece and the anticipation of seeing the whole picture will have you thoroughly enthralled.This book is very rich in history and our heroine Anne gets pulled back to Ireland in 1921 at the cusp of the Irish Civil War. First of all let me just say I am not a history buff. Before reading this book I certainly had no interest in what Ireland went through to gain her Independence. However, you cannot help but be fascinated with Amy's story telling. She weaves the tale of these heroic men and women who fought for Ireland's liberation from Great Britain and I could feel their pride and I wept for what it cost them to achieve their independence. As Anne learns firsthand about the country of her ancestors and lives the events that she only read about in "her time", you can't help but be caught up in the fascination of it all. The details in this book are phenomenal and you cannot help but respect the level of research that must have gone into the writing of this novel.The love Ann and Thomas discover in each other takes them both by surprise. Ann finds herself in love with a man in the past and is at war with what decisions to make. Their love was gradual but intense and passionate. Thomas was such a great man. He was a kind and generous soul but also smart and brave. He risked his life for his family and his country. He loved Anne with such fervor and their path was so gut wrenching but so beautiful! Their love story was simply epic!There were so many amazing characters in this book that each played their role in what unfolded in this story. Everything about this book was beautifully complex. It makes you realize we are a part of something so much bigger than ourselves. Time became irrelevant. Love became important. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time to come. I know it's only January but I know this will be one of my favorite reads of 2019. Well done Amy Harmon!

It is also a love letter about her ancestors' homeland and the incredible bond of family through the ages.Thomas and Anne were clearly destined soulmates. The feelings they have for each other were utterly divine. ‘What the Wind Knows’ uses a mix of fictional characters and real historical figures, the reader is given a gripping glimpse of what it would have been like living in such severe times in Ireland in the early 1920’s.The core of the story is about Anne Gallagher who is unexpectedly given a chance to understand where she came from. Anne has found professional success and acclaim as an author, but her career has dominated her life for far too long. Suddenly however this strong and steady man in front of her is showing her the importance of family.Thomas is an amazing character, he is soulful and kind and his deep and abiding love for Anne is so passionate in his journal entries it was a delight to read. Together they made such a wonderful couple and I enjoyed getting to know them.‘What the Wind Knows’ is truly a gem of a book. It shows that love is timeless. It will make your heart want to explode. This story is beautiful, magical and it’s a wonderful experience. A definite must read!I am a verified purchaser in Australia

Tommy Angelo in Elements of Poker, probably offered the single best piece of advice every written to becoming a good player, always play your “A” game. He never really defined what an “A” looks like, other than it was significantly better than your “D” game.The Course defines the “A” game for live low stakes no-limit Holdem. If you stick to Ed’s guidelines, you will become a winning player.I first encountered Ed over 12 years ago on the 2-plus-2 forums for his famous post, “Why You Are Not Crushing Small Stakes Holdem.” Ed had taken the time to write a long post about the skills necessary to beat the game and then took the time to answers questions. Since it was free, his only reward was helping other players get better.Ed went on to become the most prolific authors on small stakes Holdem. While I am sure he likes the money and fame, I think his principle motivations remain the same. A sincere desire to help people become better players.In The Course, Ed distills all the poker knowledge from his previous books and articles into a skill-by-skill framework to becoming proficient at 1-3, 2-5, and beyond. On any of one of these skills, there is more to learn but he provides the essential knowledge.Example, in Pokers 1%, he goes through the math of why calling and then folding too many hands is everyone’s biggest leak. In The Course, he tells you this concept, but does not spend too long on the why. To understand the why plan on reading his other books, they are all excellent and worth your while.Ed boils his advice down to advice that is very simply to remember and follow. Example, Don’t Pay People Off when they bet big is his second skill for a 1-3 level game. Just following that simple advice will enable many players to go from loser to break even. Vegas players have feasted for years on tourists never being able to lay down Ace-King when an Ace flops.To those thinking that’s “obvious”, set mining would not be profitable if most players, even supposed “good” ones would not pay you off.Later, at the 2-5 level, he explains there are times you need to violate this rule, as always folding to big bets at higher levels will become as big a leak as never folding. Next time I pay someone off, and it will happen; now I have a framework to decide if it was the right decision.Many people, who have read all of Ed’s books and articles, may wonder if this is just a repetition of previous work. For me, The Course reinforce some of the things I knew, and explained things in a way that finally got through my brain. The chapter on getting 3 streets of value from good hands was well worth the price of admission.This is one poker book where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. When you go through the entire journey with Ed, from answering the question where does the money come to taking on the pros, you emerge as a better player. I have already read the book several times, something I normally never do. It is that good. For a serious player, The Course will become the one book you always reread on the flight to Vegas.

Ed Miller has a reputation for writing excellent poker books, and “The Course” is another great one! I read this book in the hopes of drastically improving my cash game skills, and applying the strategies he teaches is going to help me do just that. I am already better at analyzing situations having played only one session after reading the book. My hand selection has greatly improved, and I feel like I am not lost in as many situations as I was before.Definitely buy this book, but don’t use the lessons, or you will become a much tougher opponent!

This is a generalized book for advanced players. If you are already beating 1/2, 2/5, and know you can beat the 5/10 competent regulars the book will give you confirmation on what you already know. The book accurately describes the state of common winning regulars that have read books, talked with friends, and posted on the internet. At the local casinos I see a field of regulars where their abilities have hit a ceiling of skill. To go beyond this requires way more investment than 95% if the field is willing to put in.If you don't understand what I am saying about and are a winning regular then this book point the path in the right direction. All you have to do is follow.One note of caution. For 2/5 Ed speaks of a barreling strategy to apply maximum aggression to your opponents in order to get them to fold better hands. While Ed is correct he lives in Las Vegas where there are many players trying to play poker for a living while feeding off of tourists. So you have players capable of folding. Depending where you live and how your games are this strategy needs to be adjusted. I have played on both coasts and games are very different between the two coasts and between various casinos.Usually there will be one casino where many regulars congregate in which this strategy can be used. But there are other casinos that no amount of barreling will force opponents to fold. So be aware when and who you can barrel off a hand and who you can't.In some of my games 90% is value 10% is bluffing. In optimal games where players fold 50% value 50% bluffing (using this method)

Honestly this book is great. It should have 5, maybe 6 stars, despite being perhaps the most expensive poker book I've ever looked at.It delivers all as is promised. At the end of each section, not chapter, there are 10 question quizzes. These were great, but seriously only 30 questions in a $50 book? You kidding me? If poker really is as deep as chess, why do I feel like the author put in the bare minimum effort?So is it worth the $50 price tag? Yeah. But he definitely put in the bare minimum to make it worth that much, will give you not a penny more.

Good for beginning to intermediate players. The book is well-written and -edited, with no-one off the typographical errors that often plague other poker books. Low on math, but high on strategic value, this is a book that is accessible and easy to understand. Low stakes, live game play is the focus and the book provides an overall strategy for beating these games. Highly recommended for those who are starting to get serious about their poker.

The book does a good job of explaining what you should put in your prenup, and why you should put it in there. It includes ideas about not just what will happen in the event of a divorce, but also a lot of great ideas of what you should put in there about how finances will be handled during the marriage. In fact, I would say about 75% of the prenup we wrote based on this book was about how finances would be split during the marriage (i.e., who pays for what, what expenses are joint, etc.), and only 25% is about what happens if we divorce. My fiance and I wrote the prenup together ourselves using this book, and then we both hired separate attorneys to review our agreement for us. Both attorneys had only minimal changes and suggestions, which I think saved us a lot of money. I think you could save a lot of attorneys fees by taking the first stab at writing the prenup yourself using this book and just having an attorney review what you've written. If you have existing kids or a complicated family structure, you should definitely have an attorney review it before signing it. For my husband and me with no kids and no plans to have kids, the prenup was a relatively straight-forward document that we easily drafted using this book.

My husband and I used this book and CD set to help us write our pre-nup before we married. The information was very helpful to us, and made the process much easier. Pre-nups are especially valuable if one of you has significantly more assets (or debts) than the other, if one is self-employed and the other is not, or if there are other special circumstances that make the default laws of your state apply in an unfair way if you did not have a pre-nup. But those kinds of circumstances can also make a one-size-fits-all prenup less appropriate for you unless you adapt it a lot.Whatever you do, it is crucial that you read the relevant portions of your state's laws very carefully, because even a lawyer can miss important details buried in the legal jargon. You can find all the state laws online through any search engine. For Californians, the MUST_READ sections include Family Code sections 1610-1617, and especially pay attention to 1615(c)3. Also look at Family Code sections 910-916. These were ones most relevant to us, but there may be others that you need to know about, for example, if you have other dependents to consider.We adapted and added to the passages in the Nolo book and CD as needed for our own circumstances, but we were lucky enough to have an expert paralegal in the family who helped us find the right legal code sections and who proofread for us to make sure our intent and our language was clear. We would still recommend you run your completed draft by someone with some expertise who has done prenups recently and who doesn't ignore your background work and try to do the whole thing from scratch at your expense.Something to think about: my husband and I found that all the detailed financial discussion and disclosure sometimes caused disagreement, but also brought us closer together. This is because we learned more about each other, reaffirmed our shared values, and learned the valuable skills of open-minded discussion, problem-solving, listening, tactful sharing of opinions, negotiation and compromise. The information in the book covered about 60% of the questions I had concerning my pre-nup. It presented the concepts of separate property and marital property. It covered a fairly broad area of potential clauses to add concerning pre-marital debt, taxes, real estate, etc. It has an appendix that list all the clauses as they might appear in a pre-nup. This was extremely useful in helping me get my head around the issues that would be important to me. My bride and I also used the worksheets on the CD - I found them useful not so much in that they will write your pre-nup for you (that's very unrealistic) but that they posed questions that got us really thinking and talking about the finer points of the pre-nup. His poems are palpable, vivid, and uplifting. This beautiful book features Keats' poems, and a grand portion of his letters, and helpful annotations. Not only a great poet, but a great understand-er, Keats died tragically at the age of 26, but his poetry lives on.

I was surprised to read the highly favourable reviews by other customers, until I realised that they were all commenting on the paperback text.Beware the temptation to assume that "Kindleization" will not significantly affect your pleasure in reading poetry. Unless the font is punishingly small, Kindle does not adjust the margin to reflect the lineation. Keats's metrics are complex, subtle, and he worked hard at developing stanzas designed to enrich his communication. Kindle's sabotaging of this achievement is a disgrace.One gets a slightly better picture by rotating the screen; but the pages were then unwilling to turn: and trying to keep track by looking for notes and bookmarks generated a farce of frustration. This edition stands out among Kindle's generally shoddy presentation of classical poetry by not even having a "Go to" table of contents.

The book came quickly and was in good condition. Like it says, these are the completed works of Keats. I believe the poems are listed in chronological order of when they were written, which makes it interesting to see how Keats developed as an author as he wrote. The book also features extensive notes in the back of the book which provide helpful information about the poems.

Classic, beautiful poetry. A must for a collection, to share, or to enjoy on your own. A college student can submit great assignments from Keats.

This was a wonderful heartfelt book with very factual accounting of the events that occurred. I remember this when it happened and this book presents so clearly what it felt like to have been a part of this terrible event in our history. I would recommend this to anyone to read.

I wish I could place a copy of it into the hands of everyone I know.While Carolyn Maull was growing up in "black" Birmingham, I was spending every long summer of my school years visiting my grandparents in "white" Birmingham. While her father was waiting on tables at the Birmingham Country Club, I was receiving gracious engraved invitations from my grandparents' friends to enjoy swimming there during my summer visits. I wonder how many times I was entertained at Sunday after-church dinner in that sunlit, high-ceilinged dining room.I wonder how many times I was driven past the imposing structure of the 16th Street Baptist Church. It's as familiar to me as any other Birmingham landmark. But where I might have seen it in passing, Carolyn Maull was there every Sunday morning of her life. It was her church, her Sunday School, her four young friends whose lives were destroyed by hatred. For as ignorant as I was (and I was pretty ignorant), I carried one searing lesson away from that terrible September day when four young girls had their lives snatched away. I was the same age as they were--twelve years old in 1963. I've been able to move freely through my life's story--through school and college, marriage, family, and career, and into the sorrows of widowhood and the joys of being a grandmother. I've been able to do all of that, but their lives were stopped in an instant. They were robbed of their futures by a monstrous hatred, shored up by an unbelievable indifference.Read this book and Carolyn Maull will tell you what it was like to grow up as an African-American child in the most segregated, most racially violent city in America. You'll learn about how anxious parents tried to shelter their children, hedging them about with rules and restrictions designed to protect them from the worst of the violence. This book is an intensely personal recollection of the events that the author experienced in her childhood in Birmingham and how those events helped shape her as a person as well as direct her work later in life. Being white and having been born in 1976, I had only heard of some of the things that were said to have happened. I had seen some appalling photos too, yet I had always imagined that it was a brief struggle to "get the bad guys" and set things straight during the Civil Rights Movement. Reading this book has helped me enter into the Southern black experience and realize that equal rights were not quickly or easily brought off paper and into reality. It has also helped me better understand the history and trauma behind the way many in black communities still think and what they, I believe justly, fear. If you'd like to let the history of black people in America touch your heart and lead you towards understanding and reconciliation not just between white and black people but all people, read While the World Watched by Carolyn Maull McKinstry.

I have read quite a bit about the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing and visited the church when I was in Birmingham many years ago. But Mrs. McKinstry's account of the event reminds the reader that that event is not ancient history. Those who lost cherished friends or family members that day are still with us and bear those scars. Moreover, our current political climate seems to be intent on resurrecting some of the most heinous attitudes and behaviors from that recent past. Thank you, Mrs. McKinstry for your courage, your bravery, and, above all, your incredible resilience. Readers, buy this book and don't put it down until you've finished reading it. It is a timely reminder of the importance of standing up and speaking out for justice.

We gave this to our daughter and her husband who were going to be going to Thailand. They had another book or two but said this one was by far the best and it was the only one they took with them when they left.

Fodor's has the best mix of glossy photos and insightful text of any travel series. Tip, go to your local library first to review the books, then come back to Amazon to purchase. Well worth it.

Cant really go wrong with Fordors. Packed with info and gives great references for any budget which is nice. Gives run of the mill visitor info with some good insider info as well. I would buy again

The last time I was in Thailand was more than 25 years ago, and I didn't leave the airport in Bangkok at that time.Since I may be returning, I wanted to think about what to see. My mind quickly conjured up images of Buddhist temples and great Thai food. I was pleased to see that this Fodor guide is filled with lots of practical advice for both, from what to wear to how to behave in temples . . . to the virtues of fresh street food in Bangkok compared to pricy, less fresh food in Bangkok's most exclusive restaurants. I also learned about side trips that I wouldn't have considered otherwise.With lots of information about costs and transportation, it was easy for me to decide what activities I could afford to pack into a brief trip.I've never had a bad experience with a trip planned through a Fodor guide, and this guide looks like another winner!

We are well traveled and typically use other guides, but this happened to be the only Thailand one on the shelf when I was at a book shop, so I decided to give it a shot. It's restaurant and hotel reviews don't really say anything about the places of business as though they never ate or stayed there. The maps don't show all the streets and street names even when they are zoomed in. They don't even mention dozens of great sights in the multiple places in Cambodia and Thailand that we went. It is a 2011 edition and by mid 2012 an incredible amount of the information was outdated. Overall it is a pretty poor guide especially compared to how good the Lonely Planet/Rough Guide ones have gotten. I do not recommend this for your trip.

While the guide does provide some nice insights into Thai culture like Buddhism, street food etc., overall I found it to be poorly organized and severely lacking if you are a first time visitor to Thailand and really looking for a book to guide you... After all isn't that the point of buying a guidebook? The book provides just one itinerary (only three pages long) and does not seem to draw out any of the "best" places to go or things to see. I found myself constantly frustrated, and half way through my trip stopped referring to Fodor's and began relying on my friend's Lonely Planet.
