Given the choice of learning 3000 pages of Social Security law and tens of thousands of regulations, or having two front teeth pulled without anesthetic, most would choose the latter, if only because it's over quicker. Get What's Yours understands this. It presents the basic background, basic facts, basic tips, and even the basic SSA form, in an environment of real scenarios. The asides are cheerful or acidic, as appropriate, and it mitigates the confusion by constantly hammering at the basics. At first I thought it annoying, but slowing down, I realized I needed to see it all again, in action, to help it sink in. It also means you can go right to the section that concerns you, because the foundation points will be there (again).This book is necessary for three reasons: Social Security is not intuitive, and sometimes makes no sense at all. Two, Americans act against their best interests, leaving all kinds of money on the table. Three, there is usually a "however" with Social Security rules.Worse, Social Security is now up to three million requests every week, but Congress keeps cutting back budget, staff, hours and whole offices. Combine that with the complexity factor, and the authors conclude you cannot trust what Social Security advises. Great.The way we go after Social Security says two things: Americans are poorer than they pretend, and they don't know how much they're giving up. Only about 3% wait until age 70 to claim, where the figures show a dramatic, peak difference (76%) over claims at 62, when the biggest group files - for the least amount offered. As an aside, there is an annual survey that always says the same thing: nearly 50% of Americans couldn't raise an emergency $2500 in 30 days, not from savings or even from friends and family. Nearly half of Americans simply cannot postpone Social Security.The most important tip is to wait until 70 before taking benefits. The next most important tip is to register at 66, but at the same time suspend benefits until 70. This not only allows your rate to grow 8% a year for four years, it also allows your spouse to claim spousal benefits (half of yours) when s/he reaches 66 and let her/his own benefits continue to grow until age 70. There are a lot of ifs ands and buts, so the book becomes a tremendous resource. The answers are clear and cogent.As a consultant who works in different environments all the time, I developed a saying that I could play by anybody's rules, as long as I knew what they were. I really needed the information in this book. Although I tell myself I didn't need it repeated four or five times over, I probably did. Each time I read a familiarly phrased core principle, I had a more thorough understanding. The authors apologize for the repetitiveness here, but repeat themselves they do. Perhaps they're trying to make sure those of us who have historically made bad financial decisions get the Social Security choices right. (And that is the main reason I am reading this book now, at this point in my life, as a 50-something. Having failed to save any money, I can at least gain a good understanding of the benefits of my fall-back retirement plan which is Social Security alone, without embellishment.) So be prepared for some not-so-subliminal behavior modification efforts tucked into these pages. Given the numbers of us who act impulsively, according to the authors' statistics, perhaps we do need to be whacked with this information repeatedly and hard.This book is also for people who think they know everything there is to know about Social Security choices. The authors spend a great deal of time debunking lovingly held misconceptions that could cost you a lot of money. They also point out that the standard advice handed out by Social Security workers on the phone and online is usually wrong and there is no liability on their part for being wrong and there's no recourse on your part (short of paying back the benefit) if you get it wrong because of Social Security's own advice.The authors also point out that we all think we're smarter than we are. So you can drop this tendency into your next insufferably boring lunchtime conversation with your much dumber colleagues -- it's called 'illusory superiority.' Makes you sound smart when you say it, doesn't it?Illusory superiority is especially acute for all those would-be geniuses who think they'll take Social Security early and invest in the stock market to beat the system. Those are the really dumb folks. This book explains, two or three times, why this is so.The book is conversational, but the subject matter is dense. Only once did this tendency to try and be accessible cause confusion. This sentence stumped me momentarily: "You've been divorced for 2 or more years, or your ex has filed for their retirement benefit." Well, we would say this in conversation without a problem, but the writer meant to say that my "ex has filed for his retirement benefit." Make no mistake, though. I learned that this is a carefully edited book and a minor problem like noun/pronoun agreement is practically non-existent. The authors are serious people, trying to make a bureaucratic behemoth like the SSA understandable to those of us who would rather not know. Women, especially, will benefit from the information in this book and, if your husband buys it and reads it, you should read it, too. Best to check that the decisions made by one spouse will ultimately benefit both. If that isn't possible, then there's a conversation that needs to take place.The bottom line is that this book is probably more than necessary. It's essential to getting the Social Security choice -- sometimes choices -- right and at the right time. With budget cuts for staff, we are never going to get the best advice from the phone people employed by Social Security. You need to find out what's best for you. You will also learn where the best calculators are (AARP has one, the authors have one), when not to get married, why it probably won't matter if you get divorced after 10 years as long as you don't remarry too soon, how not to unwittingly cause Social Security to "deem" that you have asked for two benefits at once when you really only intended to tap into one.Learning the lessons in this book and making notes that can be checked as each important birthday approaches gave me a headache. But, for once, I didn't put it off too long. And we have to figure this stuff out sometime; we have to exercise a little impulse control; and, we're dumber than we look. I'm off to grab some Tylenol. And my notes.

Since I am approaching FRA, I ordered this book hoping to learn something I don't know. But all it does is provide information that in my opinion is common knowledge, i.e. wait as long as possible to collect preferably until 70 to get the maximum benefit. Am I missing something? Is there some kind of SS secret that I've missed? UPDATE 07/13/15: Since I have finally finished the book, I summarize the advice in a couple of sentences: 1) if you cannot collect on your spouse's benefits wait till 70 if possible. 2) if you can, collect on your spouse's benefits upon reaching FRA and wait till 70 to collect on your own benefits. You would get the maximum benefits if you do these two things. THAT'S IT IN A NUTSHELL. No need to buy the book. UPDATE 10/05/2016 - I just finished reading 6 Million Dollar Retiree by Arthur V. Prosper. It has a chart of when you should collect based on your marital status, etc. and it has much better information too for retirement planning.

Although attractively laid out and with good photos, only a small number of cactus species are mentioned and important information is missing. For example, the author remarks that Mammillaria plumosa is difficult to grow but neglects to say why so I still don't know enough to make an informed decision on whether or not to purchase one (I've been thinking about it).On the good side, the photos are excellent and he does talk about basic cactus care including tolerable temperature ranges for each species he discusses. He also discusses planting a cactus bowl with good pictures and tips. It's probably a good book for a beginner but doesn't contain nearly enough information for what I want.

I was left a large cacti collection when my grandfather passed away. This book covers everything I needed to know! So far I have been able to keep them alive. It has also been referenced by several friends who found it useful to troubleshoot their cactus problems. Thanks Cacti book!

I purchased this book for my 6 year old after he expressed a sudden interest in marionettes. He is not yet reading fluently, but sits eagerly by my side nightly as we read through this beautiful book together. He has learned much about the marionettes of Gustave Baumann. The photographs provide high visual interest, and the text with marionettes doing the 'speaking' is quite appealing to young children.

I enjoyed looking at the pictures in this book and will read it when I have a chance.

This memoir had me from the first few pages. By the second chapter, I was wishing it would never end. It was like sitting down for coffee with a best friend with whom you share so much in common. Susan Richards put into words so many of my feelings for horses and for my life with them, that I could scarcely believe these words were coming from the voice of someone else. Richard's writing skill is above reproach. It is just a pure joy to read. My only complaint is that the book had to end. My only hope is that she write more wonderfully honest books about her life & that of her horses. Bless you Ms. Richards. You touched my heart.

I began reading this book the day after I put my Tennessee Walker down. I too am a therapist, with herniated discs and back pain, divorced from an abusive man and a survivor of childhood abuse. My current husband is a Vietnam Vet- a wonderful man, I love dearly. Sharing these similarities with the author made this book more meaningful to me in a strange sort of way3 1/2 months ago I noticed my horses foot was in pain. the Vet came out to check her back foot. I was prepared for Founder or Thrush but Not Lymphoma. I was angry, shocked and went into denial I did not want to believe my horse was terminal she just had a sore foot! I loved her. I couldn't lose her. I learned Love would not heal her, nothing would.Just 3 days ago I knew it was time. I told my big beautiful girl goodbye. I have not stopped crying and this book has been a source of comfort for me.

Oh my gosh, what a beautiful memoir. It starts out as just an interesting story, building and building until it just completely slays you at the end. Susan Richards is in her early forties, and she has moved past a horrific childhood and dysfunctional young adulthood, and created a satisfying life for herself. However, her strategies for keeping her demons at bay begin to crumble when Lay Me Down, her rescue horse, develops health problems. It is only by dealing with this situation that Susan is able to break through to her own healing. For anyone who had a difficult childhood, as I did, this memoir will fill you up with love, and give you reason to know that you're not alone.

I am about half way through the book and I can feel the lonliness that the author is portraying. I often feel it myself as life moves on. We each have our own things in life to deal with, accidents happen, parents divorce or pass away, etc. There can be nothing better than to be Chosen by a Horse as a friend, herdsperson, pal. I owned an Arabian gelding for about a year until my heavy schedule gave me only 2 hours a week to be with him. I had to sell him and did to a very wonderful woman who would be able to work with him for days not hours at a time. I have never missed anything as much as him before or after I owned him. That horse taught me more in 6 months than all my teachers in high school tried to do in 4 years. I know in my heart now (that it is too late) that I did the wrong thing by not readjusting my schedule to make more time available for him. A hard lesson learned.

This is an amazing story of love and healing. Ms. Richards rescued an abused horse and in the course of their time together began to heal from her own abused past. I avoid books, if I get a hint of it, that might make me cry. This book made me cry, but, I have to say, I'm really glad I read it. She has a very readable style and I like it well enough to read the "sequel to it.This is a beautiful and touching story and I strongly recommend it.

Lay Me Down had my heart from the very beginning. I became protective of her, against bossy Georgia. She reminded me of scripture, 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter. Not a nasty bone in her body. A healer of brokenness in others. I wept in the end. Kudos to Susan Richards.

I am an animal lover and I too find all the wrong men in my life that will stand behind me, be there for me and above all respect me. except for my Brother and Sisters. This Book struck close to home, It reminded me of my dogs that I love dearly and had to put them down when it was their time to go. I Laughed with Susan and Wept like no tomorrow. And yes I too am amazed at how our beloved pets love us unconditionally. We are all learning how to Love, and we all continue to love and get hurt through out or lives, I'm guessing this is "Life". Our decision is to handle our situations as best as we know how.I have taken care of a neighbors Horses and I fell in Love with them and miss them dearly, the person I took care of them for was another person who took full advantage of me and I and the Horses are paying for the way she treats people. Now my goals and dreams in life have changed and I hope to someday have a rescue / shelter for abused and neglected Horses.

It is the touching story about her journey through a difficult life and how a special horse assisted her in understanding and overcoming her challenges.When Susan is called about rescued Standardbreds, she really didn't need to add a horse to her herd of three. But the SPCA was in desperate need of homes for 40 neglected horses and Susan drove home with the first mare and foal that walked into her trailer.Lay Me Down needed more than TLC; she need proper nutrition and health care. Her rowdy foal was soon taken away by the owner, but the mare stayed with Susan who soon nursed her back to health. He glimpses into the adjustments of life with this new horse, including introducing the mare to the herd, is mixed with anecdotes of Susan's troubled childhood and adult life.This story is well written and draws the reader in right away as if she is sitting across from you at a long lunch while telling her story. I highly recommend it!

There were parts of this memoir I didn't enjoy but must have been part of her life.The worst part of any animal story is that they don't live as long as people and with someone as dedicated as this horse owner was it was so sad I couldn't help feeling like crying myself.Therese Short

This book just might change your entire business life, No bulls***! I've changed how I negotiate and have scored bigger gigs since using these time tested fool proof principles. Strategies trump tactics (learned that from this book).Negotiations are everything in LIFE! This is how to win when you engage in it.

There is too much common sense in this book. Down deep, we all know or suspect these concepts but the START WITH YES! Crowd has drilled that BS into our heads for so many decades that we’ve almost hardwired it into our brains. Buyers don’t fall for all that crap anymore. This is a book I plan to buy for my salespeople and discuss at every meeting we have.

I have been a professional negotiator as an attorney for 40 years. This is by far the best book, the best advice ever given. But it is about much more than negotiating it is about how to conduct a life.

I read this after Never Split the Difference and that sent the stage for me reading this book. A lot of the counter-intuitive approaches were out lined in that book first. But both support and augment each other. I like his idea about the rule of 3 and living in the adversary's world.

The process that Jim Camp explains in "Start with No" seems counter-intuitive, and takes a while to get used to in practice. But, changing your experience perspective to that of your customer or another "adversary" really does improve the communication and tactics of negotiation. The read is a little formulaic, but in all a good and engaging book that actually teaches you something.

I'm a copywriter and this book has become invaluable to me in not just my ability to negotiate with anyone, but also in the effectiveness of my copy. Its heavily marked up and will continue to be a book I refer to.

This book will re-orient how you think and approach any and all negotiations in your life -- that includes your business life and your personal life, particularly among sexual relationships.Camp's storytelling method is an excellent way to digest the material, and I highly suggest you read this ... a few times. Even if your adversary has read this book, your negotiations will work out better.So skip all notions of "Win-Win" or getting to "Yes", Start with "No" and see what you get for you.The 48 Laws of Power is a great companion piece.
