Baker presents a compilation of essays written over the past four years, addressing aspects of academic faculty sexism. Topics include the challenges of interviews and teaching when colleagues and students focus on your appearance, your child, and your spouse, and your voice as opposed to your research or pedagogy. Baker highlights the research on assault during fieldwork, done by a colleague here at my institution. These blog-post sized essays are quick to read through and circle around familiar themes that will come as little surprise, though they may renew or reinforce frustration. As I read through the essays I found myself increasingly numb. While individually and with topical context, the essays felt as though they would be impactful additions to a syllabus or as a targeted reading, as a full book it became draining and simply seemed to reinforce that this won’t get better. I also struggled to understand who the audience was for the full text. I can’t imagine that the various upper administrators or tenured male faculty around me will sit down and read it, less that they might act upon it. The narrative of frustration carried through, but without any sense of actual opportunities to address the issues at an individual, departmental, institutional or disciplinary level.(excerpts from my full book review on my blog Hedgehog Librarian)

Baker's book is a must read for every scholar, but I especially wish I had read it early on my my career. I tell EVERY graduate student to buy it. Part memoir, part critique, and written in a super engaging manner, it is sure to become the go to book to start conversations about how we can do better.....bc we MUST!

Come for the focus on sexism in higher education, stay for the discussion of labor exploitation. This is a really great set of essays that tie together nicely to tell a very disturbing story that needs to be told. Honestly, if you aren't nail chewing mad *and* inspired to try and make things better after you read this book, then I don't even know who you are. And I suspect that was kind of the point.

In Sexism Ed, Kelly Baker tells a story about women, work, and the academy bigger than but anchored in her own experiences of precarity and gender discrimination. Taken singly, the essays are thoughtful and incisive. Cumulatively, they paint an infuriating portrait of twenty-first century sexism, scholar-style. Harrowing, though never humorless or hopeless, this collection is required reading. I'm recommending it to everyone I know. (PS - You should also check out her memoir Grace Period.)

As a female graduate student, these essays were particularly relevant and meaningful to me. The quarter of the book resonated with me on a personal level, and sounded distressingly familiar. The rest of the book focused more on trending in hiring and teaching currently happening in academia, which was something I'm only generally aware of as a research assistant but deeply interested in.In summary, I found Dr. Baker's insights into higher education concise, well-researched and highly valuable. As this is a collection of republished op-eds, it would be unreasonable to consider this a deep dive into the topic. That being said, it's a wonderful entry into discourse about academia in the United States, and I now have about four more books that I plan to read on the subject.

This is a thoughtful, moving book that tracks one professional woman's career inside and outside of academia. It's a tough look at the inner workings of the academy, and it's eye-opening. It applies to teachers, to students, to administrators—to anyone who has struggled to be known and heard. This is a must-read for us all.

Kelly Baker's excellent book should be an essential read for anyone in academia, especially those considering work in higher education. She addresses critical issues with analytical depth and thoughtful guidance, which need to be discussed widely despite their ugliness. Grateful to Dr. Baker for writing this volume but frustrated that it is a topic needing attention.

This was hard to read, and I picked it up although I knew it would resonate too strongly. I love Kelly J. Baker's savvy critiques of the academic labor realm; I loved Grace Period. I sent Sexism Ed to colleagues and friends who all say the same thing- "oh, she gets it!"

From Publishers Weekly

When You Were Inside Mommy by Joanna Cole, illus. by Maxie Chambliss, also explains pregnancy and childbirth in language young children can understand and presents pertinent details in a matter-of-fact manner. Chambliss's palette in soft tones of pink, blue and lavender conveys the happiness of the expectant family and several detailed drawings of a developing fetus reveal some of the mystery. The small trim size makes the paper-over-board book comfortable for lap sharing while the "Note to Parents" in the back offers advice on talking to children. From School Library Journal

reS-A meaningful and sensitive way to open up a dialogue about pregnancy and childbirth with preschoolers. Cole tells the facts in a straightforward, enthusiastic, but sensitive manner, addressing the child directly ("Once you were inside your mommy. Did you know that? It's true!"). The concepts covered are the most basic: babies grow in the womb from cells provided by the mother and father and are fed through a special tube. When the muscles of the womb start squeezing and the baby is ready to be born, the scene switches to the hospital, where the joy of the birth is the main focus. Chambliss's color illustrations match Cole's tone perfectly, and show a warm and loving family consisting of a mother, a father, and a baby who develops into a boy of about four. The happiness brought on by the infant's birth can even be seen on the faces of the doctors, their smiles visible through their surgical masks. Illustrations that depict the womb and the umbilical cord make the text easier to understand without being too graphic. An informative note to parents offers practical tips for answering children's questions with honesty and warmth.Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, ColumbiaCopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

My 28 month old son loves this book. When we first got it, two months ago, he received the information with wide-eyed wonder. Now, he is able to "read" the book himself, reciting the simple sentences himself from memory while looking at the pictures. We are expecting a new sibling next year, and our thought was that before our son should know or could understand that a new baby was inside mommy, it would be helpful for him first to know and understand that he was once inside. Small kids are ego-centric by nature, and knowing it was about him really helped. I have not been able to find a better book to accomplish this job. I'd recommend it without reservation to anyone looking for a first book on the facts of life. The language and material are approached in a simple, direct, age-appropriate way. That said, there are some things a parent might want to know before purchasing this book:1) As the cover illustration suggests, the book features a two-parent, heterosexual family with one child. The family has a light peach skintone. The sex of the child is not explicit, but the illustrations lean toward implying he's a boy.2) The book does not address the sexual act, sperm, or eggs. This is somewhat good, because the material is enough for a small child to digest without adding that to it, but it makes things a bit confusing. A two page spread reads, "In the beginning you were just one tiny cell. Half of the cell came from your mommy, and the other half came from your daddy. That cell was smaller than this dot! ." The illustration shows the mom and dad holding together halves of a construction paper heart. This confused my child and made him think we could create a child by making a collage.3) The book uses accurate terms in some cases: uterus/womb and umblical cord are examples. However, it avoids others, namely, vagina. Instead of vagina, the book says "special opening." "Fetus" is avoided, much less awkwardly, through the second-person narrative style. (A fetus was not inside Mommy; "You" were inside Mommy.)4) The book assumes vaginal birth at a hospital, assisted by doctors and nurses.5) The book does not show any detailed nudity. There is an illustration of the baby being lifted from between the mother's knees, but her vaginal area is covered by a sheet and the child, while naked, is positioned in such a way that genitals and buttocks are concealed. The child is clean, not bloody or vernixy. The next spread features an imaged of a swaddled baby nursing from his mother's breast, but the illustration is really only the suggestion of a breast with no visible nipple. If your child is not exposed to breasts or breastfeeding, I don't think she/he would be likely to recognize that this is what is happening.6) There are images on several pages of the fetus inside the uterus at various stages of development. They are like colored, artistic renderings of sonogram images or cross-section anatomy texts. They are cute, and not scary in my opinion. My son loves to look at them, and it really helps him to understand gestation.

I have wanted to get a book about a baby growing for our two-year-old, as we are expecting another baby. Most books about the "facts of life" are written for kids a little older, but this is perfect for her. It uses the words "uterus" and "womb," although it does not use "vagina" (it says "special opening" instead, so we just say vagina because that's how we roll). It mentions breast and bottle feeding, although it does not discuss c-section vs vaginal delivery, so that might be confusing for a kid whose mom has/had a c-section. It also does not address how conception happens, which is just fine for us. I agree with others that the construction heart could be confusing for a kid, but that section is a little beyond our kid anyway. She mostly likes the pictures of the baby growing. Also see I'm A Big Sister or I'm A Big Brother by the same author for a nice companion piece if you are getting this for your soon-to-be big sibling.

My 5 year old son started asking the dreaded "How did I get in your belly" questions. I decided an easy way to help him understand was to get a book. I did a bit of research and from the reviews, got this one. It is really easy for him to understand. He likes to look at the pictures and asks appropriate questions as we read it. I appreciate that the book stays simple and if a parent wants to delve in to specifics further, they can use it as a base for a deeper conversation. For example, he asked about the mommy's "special hole" that they mention in the book, which I elaborated and told him was a woman's vagina. It would be a great book for a young child that is expecting a sibling. It was a good way to address some of his curiosity and basic questions have been answered -- for now.

Just what we were looking for. I have a daughter who is going on 3 that was asking a lot of questions about the baby that is growing inside Momma. She was asking things like 'is the baby cold?' and 'is the baby hungry?' and 'Will the baby have a belly button?'. We wanted a book that delt with these sorts of questions on a factual basis but at a level she could understand. This was perfect!!! The story talks about how the baby is in the uterus or womb and how the baby grows and gets fed. Also about how long it feels waiting for the day to arrive hehehe. This answered a lot of her questions and gave us the opportunity to cover other questions about the baby in a good context. Also things like 'how the baby was made' and 'where he baby comes out' are beautifully avoided. On the 'labor' page it just says something along the lines of when the baby was ready the baby came out of a special opening in Mommy that is big enough for the baby. NICELY DONE! I highly recommend this for inquisitive young children that are waiting for a new sibling or just has questions about where they came from.

great book. i read this with my toddler (3.5 years old) a few weeks ago. she loved hearing about babies. and really grasped some of the concepts of the book (like how the food mommies eat help the baby to grow). i tend to be a bit embarrassed/shy when explaining these kind of concepts to her, which is why i bought the book to begin with. and i had no problems at all reading this. very glad i got this book!

My almost 3 year old loves this book. It's simply worded and easy to understand. His baby sister will be here in a couple months so I wanted to make sure he understands what is really happening in my uterus. Only one thing I don't like is that they refer to the vagina as a "special hole". I always just add, "a special hole called the vagina" when reading it. They do explain what an umbilical cord does, but not that it's still attached after the baby is born, which I think can be a little confusing to an older sibling. All in all, it's a great way to introduce the topic to your young kids.

I liked the simplicity and found guidance here. One of the problems I run into in BJJ is that Day 1 is not a fundamentals class, its just a class like any other. You learn fundamentals along the way, mainly through trial and error. Yes, the coach or instructor will point out not to cross your feet in an armbar or how to trap the foot, trap the arm and bridge, but you learn the hard way that getting cross faced is bad. This fuels the terminator, and I really like how this book touches on how to deal with that terminator as well as fundamental mentalities. Jocko Willink says that guidelines take you further than directions. This book is how to THINK Jiu Jitsu. Everyone should read this and then follow up with Jiu Jitsu University, and I will be coming back to both frequently for sure. Great read!

This book is a great read very insightful and easy. Its Jiu jitsu minus all the crazy expert jargon,I found this book even better after I read it the second time half way through my white belt and funny with a lot of aha moments after I actually got my blue belt ( thanks mostly to this book )this book was I great reference point to keep dipping to when the whole thing seemed a little to much during the tiredness ,the injuries and lack of motivation and for that I thank you Mr Stark,my journey is just now beginning 😊👏👊

Bought and read this before my first lesson in BJJ, I'm a white belt with only 10 months now, but the philosophy and advice in this book really helps to augment what I'm learning on the mat. I also bought the journal and use it for every session, seminar, and tournament. I have much left to learn, but I have to give Mr. Stark my thanks for his books and his many helpful approaches to learning.

I bought this book about a week before I started my jujitsu journey. It has some great recommendations for beginners,I would recommend it for anyone who is in the beginning stages of their jits journey.

the book is very short and has a ton of typos (front and back cover included) the content is pretty decent but the majority of the content is stuff i've already read for free on numorus forums.

I enjoyed this book. It gave me a lot to think about regarding how I approach BJJ. Looking forward to applying the drilling at home concepts as well as becoming proficient at the techniques recommended at the end of the book. Good explanation of concepts for white belts to get their head around.

This book is full of typos and is very confusing to read. All of the chapters are extremely short and the author constantly repeats himself. I don't think anyone proof-read this book or questioned it's format and content before it went to print. Not a good book.

As an overwhelmed beginner, the text helped me to keep my focus on the here and now. After reading this, I’m more able to focus on fundamentals and just let the learning process dictate my progression.

This is one of the best books I've ever read on introversion. It has helped me so much in my daily affairs. I couldn't imagine how I would have proceeded if this book hadn't crossed my path. I can't say thank you enough to the author! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

While the book helped me understand why as an introvert my energy level gets depleted faster than that of an extrovert what I really got out of the book is that introverts have major shortcomings. The author provides examples of practical exercises to do to survive in a world of extroverts. Most of those exercises work only for women and if you only work part time. If you have a full time job with deadlines you simply don't have time for breathing exercises, long walks, or aromatherapy. Towards the end of the book she teaches introverts how to be more extroverted. There were some good nuggets of scientific research the author quoted but the overall message was disappointing. The book left me feeling like I have major short comings as an introvert and I just need to accept the fact that I'm at a disadvantage. For one third of the price I thought it would have been worth the purchase.

The title The Introvert Advantage tricks you into picking it up by making you think there's actually some sort of secret advantage or gift that introverts have. Sadly, that advantage is never truly revealed. Very disappointing, strike one. Next, the book is very choppy and not a very organized or cohesive reading experience. It also uses overly cutesy language like, "innies" "outies" and various other lame phrases. Strike two. And at the end of the book the author basically says that it's okay to be an introvert (for the hundredth time) but that sometimes you have to be an extrovert, and then gives you advice on how to get out there and enjoy life more. Wow. I was basically beyond done at this point. Strike three, you're out. Are you kidding me? I just read this entire book of cuddly wuddly stories and various pats on the back about how it's okay to be an introvert, all for her to flip the table over and go- oh well you're actually gonna have to be like an extrovert sometimes. Bleh. Also, since when do extroverts make up 75% of the population and introverts only 25%? Most other sources I see have it estimated about equally at 50/50, which would make more sense that it's pretty balanced. I suppose the excuse for this misinformation is that the book is simply outdated. It kept going on and on about how we live in an extrovert world and you'd think we'd get some useful information on how great it is to be an introvert but it's really not like that at all in this book, it's surprisingly borderline condescending. The beginning of the book had some decent information, but then as soon as it started getting into relationship issues, it completely nose dived, even though I still continued reading hoping that this "advantage" would be revealed. Most of the book was just cobbled together situations and repetitive ramblings offering very obvious advice. I'm talking basic common sense stuff that the author apparently seemed to think was worth including. I'm not kidding, near the end of the book the author gives us lists of things to do. For example when we go outside we should have all these things to take with us such as chapstick and an umbrella if it rains. Yes, because this is not useless advice at all. Terrible. Besides, much of the supposed advice seems geared toward single moms or moms who work part time, certainly not the average working man.At one point early on the author even tells the reader that if you want to, go ahead and skip around and skim through pages. Why on earth would any author say this to their reader? For crying out loud, sell your book. Convince me why I should read it, don't tell me just to skip around if I want. And that pretty much sums it up, it's a book not worth reading. My advice- do not read this book, you will be disappointed and quite possibly very insulted. This is a poor book about introverts that unfortunately turns into a really lame self help book with a confusing message. This will not satisfy your itch to learn more about introversion and have a deeper understanding of yourself. It fails to deliver the goods, and if anything it further causes confusion and misunderstandings, and that's something that Introverts really don't need.

Up until a few years ago, I never really thought much about the idea that people are either introverts or extroverts. Of course, I noticed that some people are more outgoing than others but I never really considered why exactly that is. Now that I am in my mid 30s and raising a family, I am examining my personality more and thinking about why I am the way I am. When my husband and I started talking about it, we discovered we are both introverts and suddenly, everything made sense! That would explain why I disliked group projects in school so much and why I would dread giving speeches in class. I started becoming more interested in learning about the differences between introverts and extroverts and came upon this book. Let me point out that I have never read other books on introverts so I don't have any others to compare it to. However, I decided the reviews looked good and I should try to branch out of my normal preference for fiction novels so I purchased this book. One of the most interesting facts I immediately picked up in this book is that 75% of people are extroverts which means only 25% are introverts. It makes sense then why so many of our daily activities are more extrovert-centered and why introverts may think something is wrong with them. The truth is, there is nothing wrong with introverts. This book helps to explain that the brains of introverts and extroverts are different and thus, we process everything at different speeds and different ways. While I was reading this book, I could picture some of my friends and family who fit the personality traits of those mentioned in the book and it made it easier for me to understand the information presented.I like how the book is organized, even though at times some of the information seemed a bit daunting. The book is organized in three parts and within those three parts are a total of ten chapters. The book starts about by defining the ways in which introverts differ from extroverts then goes on to discuss ways in which we can thrive in the "outie" (extrovert) world but at the same time still be ourselves. There are sections for handling relationships, parenting, friendships, and jobs which I found helpful since I can go back and read a section that I feel is particularly useful to me. I enjoyed the author's occasional humor inserted into the book which added a little bit of zest for me. In the beginning the author states that you can read the book cover to cover or skip around and read whichever sections sound appealing. I chose to read the entire book and, because I am used to reading fiction novels from cover to cover, I didn't anticipate just how much information I would be taking in all at once with more of a self-help type of book. It probably would have been more beneficial to me to read a chapter here and there so I could have more time to process all of the interesting information. I will most likely just go back and reread the sections I want to review.Overall, I found this book to be a good resource so I can understand more about myself and how I can tweak certain things I do in order to still enjoy social activities and thrive out in the world without having to exhaust my energy constantly. This book would be a good read for any introvert wanting to learn more about their personality as well as extroverts who want to understand how introverts work. It certainly helped me to understand personalities a bit more and how I can interact with extroverts and still enjoy my own activities. I'm proud to be an introvert!

The Understanding by Design Guide to Advanced Concepts in Creating and Reviewing Units

From the Inside Flap

The Understanding by Design Guide to Advanced Concepts in Creating and Reviewing Units offers instructional modules on how to refine units created using Understanding by Design (UbD) and how to effectively review the units using self-assessment and peer review, along with observation and supervision. The Guide builds upon its companion and predecessor, The Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units, and like the earlier volume, it presents the following components for each module: * Narrative discussion of key ideas in the module * Exercises, worksheets, and design tips * Examples of unit designs * Review criteria for self- and peer assessment * References for further information UbD is based on a backward design approach and is used by thousands of educators to create curriculum units and assessments that focus on developing students' understanding of essential ideas and helping students attain important skills. The Guide is intended for use by individuals or groups in K 16 education (teachers, school and district administrators, curriculum directors, graduate and undergraduate students in curriculum, and others) who want to further develop their skill in UbD. Users can work through the modules in order or pick and choose, depending on their interests and needs. Additional resources, including worksheets, examples, and FAQs, are available as downloadable forms (including fillable UbD templates that can be saved electronically), making it easy for UbD practitioners to advance their understanding and their ability to create curriculum that leads to deep, meaningful learning.

UbD is a great instructional concept, but it tries to be too much and fails to deliver meaningful quality content for both new and experienced teachers. It almost seems as if Wiggins tries to reinvent what teachers should do but takes two steps back and says "use what fits your needs." The books were supposedly created to be read in any order, but each chapter references other chapters and graphics already used. Sometimes it appears as if Wiggins is trying to reinvent what was already made: Bloom's Taxonomy and verbs, different forms of formative assessment, and teaching practices that I am already aware of before I read the book.Much of the work consists of visual grids, forms, and graphs that sometimes make the concepts more confusing than helpful. The process of constructing lesson plans is further complicated by using abbreviations that serve little purpose other than to the lesson writer himself. In other words, unless your colleagues also understand your specific design, a UbD lesson plan would not be understood by even a well-trained educator. It attempts to create vague templates with so much room that nothing seems concrete, such as evaluative criteria, objectives, and daily lessons. Don't believe me? Just read the template about a driving lesson, there is no scoring guide next to its "criteria" to show level of performance. GRASPS is nearly the same.Furthermore, there is a danger in overusing the "understanding" method of teaching, especially in lower grades (K-5). There is so much emphasis on higher-level thinking that it takes away from the assessment of other knowledge in order to obtain "a mile deep and an inch wide" level of understanding. The author wants students to make meaning of their learning in a complex way rather than just recall the material. While I agree that students should learn in a meaningful way, the level of depth can be inappropriate for lower grades in given subjects as suggested, such as math.Summary:UbD can be best described as a way for teachers to organize what they already know how to do while adding a level of complexity to the process. Emphasis on content the teacher already knows. This includes unnecessary labels (AMT, WHERETO, GRASPS, Facets), lesson planning norms (rubrics, big ideas, essential questions, unpacking standards, differentiated instruction), and generic classroom instructional strategies (see table of content in "Classroom instruction that Works"). I bought this for a college class and felt that I got nothing out of this series, not even as a new teacher.

I purchased this guide as a supplemental addition to the course materials provided by the school, and it has proved to be a wonderful resource in my Instructional Design program. Highly recommend for those that have a lot available online and wish to have a ready-reference "at-hand."

As advertised, quick delivery

Great book to learn about how to apply the UBD template to design units to teach.

This was exactly what I needed to finish my project

This is a much better designed book for both management staff that want to provide courses for their staff on curriculum developement and for staff that want to move themselves forward in curriculum development thinking. The modules can be followed as a series of units which helps planning Inservice Training.

Excellent

Great resource
