I had so much fun making my first project from this book... a Strawberry Bookmark! ( It is from the gallery of project ideas in the book , and Minki Kim's blog. ) I adore this book! It has lots of cute, do-able projects and is full of inspiration! You'll never run out of ideas of what to make, as there is a sew along coinciding with the new book launch, where talented sewists will be sharing their creations. My project , the bookmark, features two embroidery designs, made by using the Sew Illustrated thread and fabric technique that Minki uses. The book is literally filled with sweet and adorable motifs. I really like how she shows both the black and white design, paired with the design sewn with real thread and fabric! I can't wait to pick out my next Diary In Stitches project!

Love Minki Kim designs. This book shows you how to sew some of her designs and gives you easy to follow instructions. It is also fun to make and sew illustrations. I love this part of her book.

I adore everything that Minki Kim does and this book did not disappoint! I have made many projects from her first book Sew Illustrated and Diary in Stitches is a great continuation of more adorable ideas and patterns. Her directions are great and once you start doing the machine stitched illustrations you will be hooked and want to do more and more!!!

While this book was a simple read and meant more for younger children, I still enjoyed it and learned more from it. For example, I knew that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were very close in age, but I didn't know that they were both born in 1914. And while I knew that Supermans origin has had many comparisons to the story of Moses, I didn't know until reading this book that the name Kal-El roughly translated into Hebrew may mean either "all that is God" or "all that God is".The book is essentially about inspiration, dogged determination and the success of creating one of the most iconic heroes of all time. Truly a mythological hero for our time that has affected and inspired many generations. There is some sadness or even tragedy to their story, but what they created is a legacy for us all to enjoy and thank them for.

Any Superman fan will be proud of this clever homage to the two creative guys who created the original Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman...arguably America's greatest pop culture icon. In its simplicity, this thin volume will appeal to the freshman comic fan but true historians and buffs will instantly recognize, appreciate and celebrate the honorific narrative of the Jerry & Joe's story and also of the beautiful illustrations that pay tribute to the original artwork found in the early Action Comics.Kudos to the creative forces behind this powerful little memoir. Somewhere in the heavenly portion of the Phantom Zone, Siegel & Schuster are smiling.

Nobleman has written a tender, well researched kid's biography of the two boys who created Superman. The illustrator adds to the ambiance and flavor of story. This is a great book for elementary students, especially those who love superheroes.

Fun story for boys who like comics. Only downside is that there are not enough words and the kindle format is a little tricky to navigate on the fire. My son loved the book though, and he is now in the process of making his own comic book that he is going to "sell" someday.

As much as I love this book, I wanted more. The book gives a brief description over VAST stretches of the lives of Siegal and Shuster.I felt like I was not given the whole story.

Left you wanting more. There is a bigger story that what was drawn here. Also believe if the format was change to more of a landscape format similar to Brad Meltzer's book it would be better. But overall good read

The book was terrific. It was great to get some insight on how the Superman character came to be especially since he is a part of our American culture. What is unbelievable is how the two men who created the Superman action hero were treated. Kids will love this book.

Very well written, insightful, and great story. The illustrations add to the story and help make the book more interesting for the younger crowd (and older crowd who appreciates comics). This book is one that can stay on the shelf for many years and enjoyed by generations.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best books written about a specific mountain climbing expedition. This particular book is a lyrical and moving account of the the first women's expedition to climb Annapurna in the Himalayas. It provides great detail and insight into their two month odyssey in the mountain and chronicles the challenges that they faced in trying to reach the summit.The leader of the expedition authored the book and her characterizations of her fellow expeditioners are interesting and engaging. Her description of life on an expedition is filled with a myriad of detail that will enthrall all armchair climbers, as well as climbing enthusiasts. These details make for gripping reading, at times, and her descriptive narrative is always evocative of another time and place. In reading it, one realizes just how far women have come in terms of acceptance in the mountain climbing arena. Their time spent on the mountain is illustrated by photographs that beautifully resonate with the lyricism of the author's chronicle. The obstacles they overcame, their day to day travails, the bonding and alliances that formed amonst the different members of the expedition, all add to the beauty of the book. The photographs memorialize those moments in time that best evoke the nuances of what it was like on the expedition and, at the same time, give one a sense of the beauty and majesty of the mountain. The success of the expedition in terms of their having actually reached the summit, however, is clouded by the tragic loss of two of its members on a second, ill-advised attempt to reach the summit. Nonetheless, the quest of the American Women Himalayan Expedition to reach the summit of Annapurna is a testament to courage and commitment. It is also a great read.

Most of time I was awed by the courage and determination these women showed in their quest to be the first American women to climb to the summit of Annapurna, but sometimes I was annoyed that they were not well-versed in the culture of the people of Nepal and so were sometimes overwhelmed by the demands of the Sherpas. I appreciated getting to know the members of the team as well as the Sherpas and how they related to the author. I do believe the author assumed that only other mountain climbers would read this book, so she did not explain some of the terms she used, as well as what some of the equipment was used for. The map and pictures were really helpful in visualizing the climb and the extreme conditions they faced.

Bought this book after learning of the "A Woman's Place is on Top" logo from the recent North Face t-shirt designs. I loved it. Great recount of what these brave women endured and overcame in order to have a somewhat successful expedition. Highly recommend.

Outstanding. I am an avid reader and this story and writer's style is pure enjoyment. Arlene Blum has a gift for telling a story. The story itself is fascinating. I will keep this book to read again and will seek out other books by Ms. Blum.

I read the original story in 1989, one year after the actual trip. The book eventually wore out, and I later purchased this revised edition. I have never braved those heights. In fact, I have an extreme fear of heights, and that has brought me to develop an interest in those who take up this challenge. Reading the experiences of the first women's climb of Annapurna has served to encourage me to push ahead and attempt things I otherwise would not have. That's how powerfully this book has affected me for all these years.

This was an enjoyable read about a women's expedition to climb the mountain shown on the cover. An awful lot of time was spent detailing the logistics of getting the supplies to the right places though I can now understand how the expedition relied on this facet of the operation to succeed. I have alot of respect for these women!

I am a fan of Sarah Vowell's, owning most if not all of her books. She is extremely knowledgeable but I must say her sardonic writing gets tiring after a while. Not everything about the American Revolution, George Washington, and one of his favorite "sons" Lafayette, is funny. It just isn't. And while we do need to lighten up and understand the quirky nature of history in general and American history in particular, Vowell's voice in this book simply gets tiring. I am not impressed with this one, although I do admire Vowell's brilliance and ability as a writer. Just hope she expands her horizons with her next effort. If she focuses on something like the American Civil War and tells us about it the same manner she does with this one, I'm going to return the book. Vowell needs to expand the way she tells her stories beyond being cynical or sardonic.

I'd heard about Sarah Vowell, but I was never interested in reading any of her books until I heard her being interviewed about this one. Something about what she said intrigued me, so I got it. It won't be the last book of hers that I read -- in fact, I've got another one on order already. She reminds me of Bill Bryson, though I've only read one of his books, in that she provides lots of history combined with contemporary wit and humor and a sense of the uncanny connections between historical events separated by generations. For example, she discusses a connection between the story of Lafayette and Herman Melville that I found intriguing, but there are quite a few other examples. She also makes some American icons (and their British counterparts) come alive in ways that traditional (i.e., often bland) history does not.I have only one criticism of the book, really: the story of Lafayette recedes in the background (sometimes out of the picture entirely) in favor of her retelling of key episodes in the Revolutionary War; I didn't really expect a history of the War and was disappointed that Lafayette vanishes at times. However, she does a very good job in describing the weird coincidences and serendipity that resulted in the defeat of the British.I also have a second complaint, but not against Ms. Vowell (well, not really). There was one instance where she talks about a solider named Stephen in one place and a few pages later he becomes Stephens (or maybe it was Steven and Stevens; I can't recall). As I often ask, where were the editors? If I caught this on a casual read, why didn't someone else catch it? Maybe having to do an index would have helped.

Sarah Vowell’s acerbic, insightful wit comes through loud and clear in this fascinating account of French General Lafayette and his role in the American Revolution, but it took me a while to adjust to her irreverent banter in print--as well as being an author Vowell is also known for her radio pieces on This American Life. This book runs almost 270 pages without any chapter breaks, and reads like the long-winded but mesmerizing stand-up routine of a highly knowledgeable, history obsessed comedian who knows how to use humor to make a point.Lafayette was still a teenager when he left his young bride behind and snuck out of France to join the American Revolution against the wishes of his family, but he ended up becoming such a key figure in the winning of the war that cities all over the country are named for him. Vowell has a special knack for revealing the personalities of the many historical figures she writes about, their foibles, revealing quirks, and strengths. Since Lafayette had a close relationship with George Washington he features prominently in the book and I really appreciated getting a clearer picture of the man behind the myth. Vowell even manages to make battles and military strategy interesting, in part by keeping her focus on the people involved, and in part by not overlooking the missteps or ironies of the situations.Vowell finds plenty of opportunities to relate the struggles of the Revolutionary period to American politics today, pointing out that many current ideological divisions and tendencies have an origin, or at least an analog, dating back to the founding of the country. The book also covers the aftereffects of the Revolutionary War in France and Britain, and the America of 1824, which was when John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson competed in a notorious presidential election and the then elderly Lafayette made a return trip to the country that was still so besotted with him that two thirds of the population of New York City welcomed him ashore. While researching the book Vowell visited historic sites in America and France and she takes readers along on those trips too, giving us her impressions of tourist destinations like Williamsburg and Valley Forge while relating what happened there in the past.In this book Vowell manages the neat trick of being both funny and stirring. She clearly loves history, and she makes it very easy to join her in that passion.

Full of annoying, confusing mistakes. It was also oversimplified in explaining the concepts. There are many better books on quantum out there.

I used this book for guided independent study in my senior year as a Chemical Engineering undergraduate.To learn from this book is easy. Lowe does a great job integrating the mathematics into his work. Some authors tend to get bogged down in math, and others (in my mind incorrectly) insist that you don't need to understand the math to understand quantum chemistry. Lowe strikes the right balance and shows what the mathematics mean, chemically. Additionally, the excercises are well written and useful. Including solutions to some of the excercises is a must for a book of this level, and I'm glad to see it done here.Two complaints: Some color diagrams would make for easier visualization of some of the more difficult topics...and more efforts at introducing computer software commonly used in quantum chemistry (eg. Gaussian) would have been nice.All in all, a good book, much better than most quantum chemistry texts available.

Assumes little mathematical sophistication. Excellent book for the beginning student of quantum chemistry. Suitable for junior/senior undergraduate or beginning graduate students. Contains a wealth of practice exercises with detailed answers to most. The latter part of the book is concerned with practical applications of quantum chemistry with an excellent and readable introduction to modern computational methods. Helps students get a practical and qualitative feel for quantum chemistry and provides an excellent foundation on which to base later study.Covers quantum basics, group theory, Hartree-Fock-based approximations, MO/AO theory and applications to periodic systems to name but a few of the well-chosen topics.

If you are looking for an introductory text for Quantum Chemistry, well, here it is. Lowe understands something very important about writing introductory texts, something that most authors don't grasp. That being that an introductory text isn't simply a book that talks about the foundations of the given subject, but also speaks to someone who is inexperienced in the subject. Lowe has this down to almost an art; most subjects are sufficiently explained with little fluff or unneccesary technical jargon. The book isn't quite as expanse as say, McQuarrie's Physical Chemistry, but what is? The essentials are explained with the neccesary depth and any mathematics involved are explained in the Appendices. The book stumbles when Lowe tries to explain more qualitative ideas, like LCAO. Without the structure of mathematics, the book seems to falter quite a bit. After several readings, I still had no idea what Lowe was talking about in the latter sections of chapter 7. Neverless, this is a pretty strong text.

Though not a reader or speaker of Chinese, to me this seems an excellent translation in that it is direct and clear, with footnotes sufficient for understanding the ideas and their genealogy/s (issues of translation and specific sources are noted, unlike in some of the more popularly-marketed Taoist books). However, in reading these internal-alchemy books, I'm usually still left wondering, "but what are you actually supposed to do? how do you progress from one stage to another? what the heck does a firing-times (et al.) really mean since it's just a metaphor? etc." And this one was similar. I get the allegories and the symbolic system at this point, but frankly I still don't really quite know what it entails in "real life". Most such texts purport to reveal something, but end up reverting to: "this is secret, so you need to find a teacher for direct oral transmission." But that's not possible for everyone. In fairness, this book was not as heavy on the "get a teacher" emphasis as many others are, it's just that the commentary is no more specific or plain than the original poem-series. Don't get me wrong, I still liked reading it, and some of the symbols are really interesting poetic images in themselves. It's just that obviously there's something I'm missing. Actually, the commentator (Wang Jie)'s own poem at the end spoke to me a tiny bit more than his commentary. And, this press also has published Wang Mu's 'Foundations of Internal Alchemy' (also tr. Pregadio), which really did just about explain it all. So perhaps in re-reading these two in conjunction, and doing the work....

Extraordinary book for those who already know something of navigating the celestial pathways. Inner teachings translated to a level far more readily understood by fairly experienced students.

Of scholarship and translation and this is no exception. Simply the best in English and in terms of clarity I suspect in any language including Chinese (because these classical texts do require translation, explication and interpretation).

Jonathan Geraci has given us a wonderful book on psalms 23 and the powerful role it plays in our lives. The book has a lot of shorter, personal stories you can relate to and, the author asks very deep-thinking questions that get you to question everything. Instead of giving you the answers, he encourages you to do your own probing. The book is made up 31 days that can be read through easily and quickly without overly drawn out explanations. He explains psalms 23 in a very easy way with simple logic. By reading this book you can certainly grasp the essence of what God means to you and how to apply psalms 23 to your own life.This is a very powerful book that focuses on self-directed thought and critical thinking to challenge us to come up with the answers for ourselves. Many books just "tell you" how it is and expect you to digest their truth, but I found this book "Bring You Home Again" to be a different flavor from the norm.

Psalm 23 is one of the most famous passages from the Bible! I think most people have heard Psalm 23, often read at funerals, but this was a way to read the Psalm and find daily application. The author brings in various additional passages of Scripture, personal life examples as well as examples from others, historical details, etc. as ways to bring the principles from Psalm 23 into life and relevance for us today. Each day had an application question or two for reflection and journaling. I enjoyed this devotional and the daily application as a way of looking at truly resting in the Great Shepherd and His provision for us. Each step in journaling assists the reader in releasing more of the things that can hold one back from experiencing a confident, secure, and refreshed life in Jesus.

I'm enjoying my read through Bring You Home Again, an in-depth review of the 23rd Psalm, written as a daily devotional to span one month. Jonathan not only does a deep dive into this specific psalm, but also introduces other related scripture passages to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the section that we're exploring. I particularly appreciate that he poses a question for journaling at the end of each daily reading. It gently "forces" me to reflect on a more personal and intimate level. The book is extremely practical, acknowledging the overwhelm and distractions so prevalent in our society today, and guiding us through them via the 23rd Psalm. Highly recommended.

A wonderful nugget of comfort. Psalm 23 is a frequently quoted chapter, too often taken for granted. I love how Jonathan takes us through this treasure, teaching us the deeper truths of God's love and protection.
