Good book for students of stitching, embroidery and the role of women's work in the early days of stitch and embroidery

This book is important and fascinating. It is an important piece of art history, as well as the history of embroidery. It never seemed to me to be dismissive of the medium and said instead that what women did in the past was eventually denigrated by others, e.g., the guilds, church officials (not the author). This book is a part of the reinstatement of women's place in art history, as well as fiber/needle arts.I say it is fascinating because I am very interested in how people lived and created art, throughout time. And it is of interest because it tells what happened to a beautiful art form and how it became devalued by a mostly male-controlled art world, except in certain settings.There are other books to read about the subject, that will round out the appreciation of needle arts, including "Embroidered Textiles" by Sheila Paine. I have read dozens of books on this subject, including books on the tools of the trade, ancient and new.I embroider and I vote, so I vote this book "excellent".

As an AVID embroiderer and feminist, I had see this book often over the years but had never gotten around to reading it. Ugh. Terrible! I want my money back.The nicest thing to say is that it is very dated, and for the time, it was probably important. I just found it to be a very bad, boring, repetitive study that really doesn't say much. She really just says the same thing over and over and over: Embroidery has "signified" femininity through the ages. That's about it, folks. Well, we learn that sometimes this has been an empowering thing, but mostly it has been a way of keeping women in their place and submissive, etc. Occasionally women have rebelled against it. That's really it. That is it. I don't think I read more than three chapters though I scanned the rest.What I found so offensive is that Parker is clearly not an embroiderer herself, doesn't know anything about the medium, and really couldn't care less about it. I was amazed at how totally insensitive and dismissive of it she is. It is the subject of her book after all. But her attitude is pretty much of a distanced, "scientific" observor reporting on something she had absolutely zero knowledge or understanding of herself.If you are an embroiderer, do not look to this book to tell you anything. I learned zilch except maybe a historical fact or two. A really good book about women and embroidery has yet to be written.

If you've ever looked at samplers or thought of the ways in which needlework shaped the lives of women for centuries (mostly in the negative sense), you will enjoy this book immensely. Parker takes one of the central tasks expected of women in the 18th and 19th centuries and shows how women used needlework as an outlet to express feelings of dismay and dislike. It just goes to show you: where there's a will, there's a way.If you enjoy learning about women's lives in the past, and have either an interest or an aversion to needlework yourself, I think you will enjoy this most unusual history.

Wow, I'm impressed with this book. Fascinating, well researched and detailed history of women and embroidery. This is a must read for anyone, especially women, who embroider as their primary artistic expression. As an artist who is working within this medium to excavate and reveal the living present of misogyny, this book has enriched my understanding of the work I do. Highly highly recommended.

My kids love this book! (I got the same book for each so the can color together) the picture are large enough that the 4 year old can color them nicely but not babyish.

In all honestly the pictures were very low quality and looked like they were cheaply printed of the internet , however my sun enjoyed it so it’s not that horrible.

Poor image quality. Lines don't go to edge of paper. Looks like the entire book is just scanned copies from someone's home printer.

My son loves pokemon and he loves this.

Beautifully written and illustrated. Like a wonderful meal, this book should be savoured slowly and shared with friends. One again Henri Nouwen breaks open the Gospels, strengthens our Catholic faith, and helps us see beyond our own brokenness. In addition to being a wonderful and contemplative read, the book itself is beautiful and would make an excellent gift.

I love that Henri wrote this for himself in the sense that he really wanted to write it for his own reasons and not because somebody else wanted him to write another book. To hear the depth of understanding and appreciation from someone who lived a eucharistic life is priceless. I'm experiencing a new depth of appreciation for the sacrament that is most personal to Jesus. Everyone I show this book to wants a copy. I highly recommend it.

Henri Nouwen explains the Lord's Supper in the context of the two disciples' walk with Jesus down the road to Emmaus at the end of Luke's gospel. He sees five interrelating movements in the celebration of the Lord's Supper, each movement corresponding to an event along the disciples' walk. This is a meditation, not a theological treatise, so the soul and the mind share the road. Nouwen's meditations are challenging and joyous, and this is one of the best I've read. Going on any trip with Henri Nouwen brings joy, whether it's into a painting ("Return of the Prodigal Son"), into the desert ("Way of the Heart"), across a calendar ("Bread for the Journey"), or into his own anguish ("Inner Voice of Love"). I was so taken with Nouwen challenge to a "eucharistic life" in this book that I have celebrated the Lord's Supper by myself several times.

An excellent theology of the Eucharist. A small book, but it's very weighty, and requires multiple readings to really reveal itself.

All Christians would be well served by reading this book. It is an easy read and does not get into deep technical theology but explains thoughtfully and clearly what it means to be a thankful Christian and what that thankful life would look like in your everyday life.

It is a quick read, easy to understand, that makes one think and pray.

I purchased this book directly from Mr. Dearman's website, custodysimplified.com, back in January of this year, after getting served with papers from my ex seeking to take full physical custody of my daughter.Like most people, I did not take this lightly. I scoured the internet, high and low, for nearly 7 full days... and all of the information was overwhelming. The majority of sites covered a small slice of information, but were actually lawyers advertising their services that ran in the THOUSANDS of dollars, which I could not afford. Some sites only covered the court process, others covered how to handle the situation (oftentimes, with POORLY written advice), horror stories of others, and legal language that the layman would be confused and flustered by. I felt like going crazy up until that point, with fear, panic, anger, and hopelessness.Then, I came across Mr. Dearman's website, and I read through a few blog posts, and then an excerpt of the book. What I saw was so comforting (I'll explain more on that in a moment). Feeling at my wits end, I decided to purchase the book, and I can say, with 100% sincerity, that this book saved me. I was no longer scared. I was empowered, I was enlightened, and most importantly, I felt prepared.This book is clear, concise, easy to read, and chock full of rational, logical advice. It tells you how to behave during this highly stressful time where your emotions are running high. It gives you a clear list of warnings, and things to avoid that look bad in court that you wouldn't cognitively rationalize on your own. It tells you what to expect through the whole process, so you are prepared for anything.What I found most important, is that it lays out a plan of action for you, that is super easy to follow, all-inclusive, easy to complete. Just check off each point as you go. When it was time to go to court, I had compiled a neatly organized book that made the judge's eyebrows raise in amazement when he looked through it. He even commended the work that I had done, while my ex had a few jumbled papers printed out as "evidence".I had spent immeasurable hours searching for what to do, and this book has it all in one place. Needless to say, I won the case, my ex had to pay my attorney fees, and I have my baby!!!!***HERE'S THE KICKER*** This book was initially marketed toward father's (the new version is not). I am a woman! If you're going through a custody battle, this will be the most valuable couple of dollars you will ever spend.Thank you, Erik, for your hard work putting this together and helping parents in truly desperate times!

I had so much fun making my first project from this book... a Strawberry Bookmark! ( It is from the gallery of project ideas in the book , and Minki Kim's blog. ) I adore this book! It has lots of cute, do-able projects and is full of inspiration! You'll never run out of ideas of what to make, as there is a sew along coinciding with the new book launch, where talented sewists will be sharing their creations. My project , the bookmark, features two embroidery designs, made by using the Sew Illustrated thread and fabric technique that Minki uses. The book is literally filled with sweet and adorable motifs. I really like how she shows both the black and white design, paired with the design sewn with real thread and fabric! I can't wait to pick out my next Diary In Stitches project!

While this book was a simple read and meant more for younger children, I still enjoyed it and learned more from it. For example, I knew that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were very close in age, but I didn't know that they were both born in 1914. And while I knew that Supermans origin has had many comparisons to the story of Moses, I didn't know until reading this book that the name Kal-El roughly translated into Hebrew may mean either "all that is God" or "all that God is".The book is essentially about inspiration, dogged determination and the success of creating one of the most iconic heroes of all time. Truly a mythological hero for our time that has affected and inspired many generations. There is some sadness or even tragedy to their story, but what they created is a legacy for us all to enjoy and thank them for.

Any Superman fan will be proud of this clever homage to the two creative guys who created the original Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman...arguably America's greatest pop culture icon. In its simplicity, this thin volume will appeal to the freshman comic fan but true historians and buffs will instantly recognize, appreciate and celebrate the honorific narrative of the Jerry & Joe's story and also of the beautiful illustrations that pay tribute to the original artwork found in the early Action Comics.Kudos to the creative forces behind this powerful little memoir. Somewhere in the heavenly portion of the Phantom Zone, Siegel & Schuster are smiling.

Nobleman has written a tender, well researched kid's biography of the two boys who created Superman. The illustrator adds to the ambiance and flavor of story. This is a great book for elementary students, especially those who love superheroes.

Fun story for boys who like comics. Only downside is that there are not enough words and the kindle format is a little tricky to navigate on the fire. My son loved the book though, and he is now in the process of making his own comic book that he is going to "sell" someday.

As much as I love this book, I wanted more. The book gives a brief description over VAST stretches of the lives of Siegal and Shuster.I felt like I was not given the whole story.

Left you wanting more. There is a bigger story that what was drawn here. Also believe if the format was change to more of a landscape format similar to Brad Meltzer's book it would be better. But overall good read

The book was terrific. It was great to get some insight on how the Superman character came to be especially since he is a part of our American culture. What is unbelievable is how the two men who created the Superman action hero were treated. Kids will love this book.

Very well written, insightful, and great story. The illustrations add to the story and help make the book more interesting for the younger crowd (and older crowd who appreciates comics). This book is one that can stay on the shelf for many years and enjoyed by generations.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best books written about a specific mountain climbing expedition. This particular book is a lyrical and moving account of the the first women's expedition to climb Annapurna in the Himalayas. It provides great detail and insight into their two month odyssey in the mountain and chronicles the challenges that they faced in trying to reach the summit.The leader of the expedition authored the book and her characterizations of her fellow expeditioners are interesting and engaging. Her description of life on an expedition is filled with a myriad of detail that will enthrall all armchair climbers, as well as climbing enthusiasts. These details make for gripping reading, at times, and her descriptive narrative is always evocative of another time and place. In reading it, one realizes just how far women have come in terms of acceptance in the mountain climbing arena. Their time spent on the mountain is illustrated by photographs that beautifully resonate with the lyricism of the author's chronicle. The obstacles they overcame, their day to day travails, the bonding and alliances that formed amonst the different members of the expedition, all add to the beauty of the book. The photographs memorialize those moments in time that best evoke the nuances of what it was like on the expedition and, at the same time, give one a sense of the beauty and majesty of the mountain. The success of the expedition in terms of their having actually reached the summit, however, is clouded by the tragic loss of two of its members on a second, ill-advised attempt to reach the summit. Nonetheless, the quest of the American Women Himalayan Expedition to reach the summit of Annapurna is a testament to courage and commitment. It is also a great read.

Underheralded women vs nature story. So much adventure-survival lit is male-based, this is a quality counter balance.

Most of time I was awed by the courage and determination these women showed in their quest to be the first American women to climb to the summit of Annapurna, but sometimes I was annoyed that they were not well-versed in the culture of the people of Nepal and so were sometimes overwhelmed by the demands of the Sherpas. I appreciated getting to know the members of the team as well as the Sherpas and how they related to the author. I do believe the author assumed that only other mountain climbers would read this book, so she did not explain some of the terms she used, as well as what some of the equipment was used for. The map and pictures were really helpful in visualizing the climb and the extreme conditions they faced.

Bought this book after learning of the "A Woman's Place is on Top" logo from the recent North Face t-shirt designs. I loved it. Great recount of what these brave women endured and overcame in order to have a somewhat successful expedition. Highly recommend.

Outstanding. I am an avid reader and this story and writer's style is pure enjoyment. Arlene Blum has a gift for telling a story. The story itself is fascinating. I will keep this book to read again and will seek out other books by Ms. Blum.

I read the original story in 1989, one year after the actual trip. The book eventually wore out, and I later purchased this revised edition. I have never braved those heights. In fact, I have an extreme fear of heights, and that has brought me to develop an interest in those who take up this challenge. Reading the experiences of the first women's climb of Annapurna has served to encourage me to push ahead and attempt things I otherwise would not have. That's how powerfully this book has affected me for all these years.

This was an enjoyable read about a women's expedition to climb the mountain shown on the cover. An awful lot of time was spent detailing the logistics of getting the supplies to the right places though I can now understand how the expedition relied on this facet of the operation to succeed. I have alot of respect for these women!

amazing and in parts tragic story of shear human perseverance; lots of details on the climb, less so on the descend.
