Just put my Kindle down....I hardly know how to start this review. I will never forget this book, nor the strong feelings it engendered inside me. For this reason, it has to be five stars. I hate romances; I never read them, and can barely tolerate a romance tucked inside a thriller or mystery, or time travel science fiction. I must admit, I almost put this down a couple of times during the first 20% or even 30%. In truth, it was so terribly depressing that I argued with myself about whether I should keep reading. Not exactly a description of a five star novel, huh? The problem was that the characters were so well drawn that I almost felt I knew them from another time, another life. I was annoyed that the author just about hit the reader over the head to emphasize the character traits....okay, I get it already! Meredith works herself constantly to keep from feeling anything; Nina runs all over the world to keep from being at home with her own feelings. Any "constant reader" can predict portions of the ending when books start like this. But...but....then I began to realize the depth of the history that I was being taught. The siege of Leningrad....I never thought of it before. Nearly nine hundred days and over one million people dead - more than 700 thousand from starvation - women and children in a world turned upside down. I never realized that this was yet another horror of World War II. I've read the Holocaust stories and thought of the suffering and the losses and bravery of the people of Europe and other countries....but Russia? I'm ashamed to say I knew nothing. This brilliant author had a story to tell and told it in the best context possible - through realistic people whose lives and feelings just about jumped off the pages and into my heart. Thank you, Kristin Hannah, for an amazing read.

This is one of the best books I have had the pleasure of reading. Not only from a storyline point of view, but also from a literary side - the writing is elegant, eloquent and simply a pleasure to feast your eyes and mind on. The descriptive text immediately conjures up the most vivid pictures (I hope this book is never made into a movie as it would destroy the beauty that a well-written book achieves). I am amazed at the way Kristin Hannah is able to jump from one character to the next, seamlessly, and actually get into that character's head so perfectly. It's like she IS those people! I was fascinated by the fact that she had described the Siege of Leningrad so well - I have been to St Petersburg and visited the Siege museum - it's horrific, fascinating and thought-provoking all in one. I have also been to several German and Polish concentration camps and not been as moved (still incredibly moving, I don't want to minimise the effect the latter have as well but differently so). It is hard to imagine what it must have been like for the Russian women in Leningrad under the Reign of Terror that winter; the psychological strain of Stalin's regime, the physical strain of the cold, the war and the famine, and the emotional strain of seeing your loved ones killed or die from starvation, illness and the cold. All these are so well portrayed by the author. In addition, I thought that the way she wove the two stories together through a fairy tale was exquisite - it kept me reading until the end. And the end...so satisfying in every way. This is a book that should be on everyone's MUST READ list!

I loved Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale. So naturally I was excited about Winter Garden. It started off interesting but it just dragged on about the dysfunctional relationship and the characters are so bland. I kept wondering when the mother would tell her story about Leningrad. This was one of those books I had to give up on. It had a good premise, but the execution fell flat. I think it would have worked if we had actually had the mother tell the story sooner rather than waiting further into the book. It seemed as though the author had many plotlines going on with the sisters fighting each other, their mom, Meredith having marital problems, the mothers fairytale/true story.

Kristin Hannah has a tremendous gift in her ability to weave voluminous historical details with relevant relationships in the present. In Winter Garden, she sets out pieces of a puzzle that grows in multiple dimensions with her characters and their individual and intersecting worlds. She truly takes one on a voyage throughout the world, into the past, and back to home. Kristin allows readers to have snippets of insight along the way without revealing next steps on the journey. While this is fiction, one realizes that real people did in fact experience horrible circumstances and yet survived. Growth and healing are key elements that help the reader absorb some of the horrific facts.

I know I'm in the minority but I hated this book. I love the author. Have read other books by her but I found this book depressing, and just plain boring. The story is about 2 sisters who must care for their mother after their father dies. Their mother has a past and the story is told by the mother to the sisters by way of a fairy tale; add to that the lives of the sisters being sprinkled into the plotline, this book was IMHO not even close to the Kristin Hannah books I've read previously.I say skip it read one of her others for example the Nightingale now there was a great book !

This book is pathetic - it repeats the same thing chapter after chapter. After the first 10 times I read how lost and isolated these girls feel (in almost the same words each time); I think I got the point. Hard to go on without Dad - yes, got it. Can't connect in their relationsships, yes, got it. Please tell me something new in the next few chapters or I give up out of boredom with all this repeated angst. I don't often put down a book without completing it; but I am going to make an exception with this one. The writing is juvenile, the characters "thin", the reflections on the human condition repeated ad nauseum. Save your money - i wish i could return this one. I can't fathom how it garnered 4 stars.

In my mind and experience, no other translation and commentary on the Gita comes close to Paramahansa Yogananda's for clarity, depth, understanding and insight. Reading it -- along with his other major chef d'oeuvre, "The Second Coming of Christ" -- has convinced me to become a devotee and student of his teachings. The insights he offers to the Gita are often literally breath-taking and his writing style is so eminently understandable as to be useful by anyone with a modest education and a sincere desire to learn.This is indeed a true spiritual classic of major proportion!

Out of all the translations of the Bhagavad Gita that I've read, Paramahansa Yogananda's is the most beautiful and comprehensible. Not to mention his insightful commentary that goes along with it. This new ebook version from SRF is so lovely - colorful and aesthetic. I've had the print version for a while now and always enjoyed it, even just reading a page or two puts my mind in an uplifted state. And so naturally I'm happy to have this on my kindle for on-the-go perusal. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in striving to live a spiritual life in the modern world.

I happen to be its translator in my language. Not at all good. It is a compilation of the two-volume one, "God Talks With Arjuna - The Baghavad Gita, again from Self-Realization Fellowship. One who really wants to understand the Gita, extremely metaphorical, should buy the two-volume one, which is more than excellent, written from Paramahansa Yogananda, "The Father of Yoga in the West". Find it here in Amazon. The full meaning is there (the two-volume), a masterpiece.

A must read for anyone that isn't interested in reading the Bhagavad Gita superficially. Yogananda sets the stage for the Gita perfectly so that the reader is (more) mentally prepared to embark on the Gita journey.

What a great book for those who love the GITA. Great text and commentary with nice photos.

A great summary of the more in-depth teachings in the two volumes of "God Talks With Arjuna". You may want to read this first then "God Talks With Arjuna" to get the most benefit from this magnificent teaching.

An excellent book if you want to know the true meaning of the Bhagavad Gita!! Very inspiring and well written. I urge anyone who wants to find the true interpretation of the Gita to purchase this book published by Self Realization Fellowship and written by Paramahansa Yogananda.

After reading the Yoga of Jesus, I knew this one would be good as well. This is a must read for anyone taking Yoga Teacher Training. :)

This is an overview of the canon Buffy comic. As a TV series, Buffy's glory years were in high school. After that, the show lost its sense of magic and romance, gradually becoming a gloomy, poorly plotted bummer. Season 7 is littered with continuity errors. Enter season 8 in comic form, widely touted as JOSS WHEDON's season 8! Season 8 generally had very good artwork and got off to a strong start. Then it all went goofy. Whedon is a woke feminist so, of course, Buffy goes temporarily "gay now". Without spoilers, the last two thirds of season 8 are a dull mess. Season 9 is stronger, even though wokeness rears its grisly head again. Buffy might need an abortion! What choice will she make? Surely there's more to feminism than being gay or debating abortion. Even philandering Whedon's fake brand of feminism. After season 9 the artwork declines, by season 12 it's at Bazooka Joe level. Seasons 10 and 11 are ok storywise, then 12 limps to its death in a single, snoozer volume. Narratively, it's pretty iffy. A Big Bad that was surely long dead is now alive, doing, as it turned out, nothing. The ending is a dud and after all these years it's tempting to wonder if Buffy's legacy wouldn't have been stronger if it was cancelled after the wondrous season 3.

Although it was refreshing to have a briskly moving plot after dozens of tediously slow story arcs in earlier volumes, this was overly rushed and could have used a second book's worth of development. Especially the inexplicably jolting ending in a scant few pages.But what really disappointed was the horrible art. I can't tell if its all on the inker or colorist but the character's faces and expressions were barely recognizable. So possibly the penciler as well. The facial close ups were especially misshapen. A sad finale after so many beautifully rendered previous volumes. I strongly vote for a redo.

I'm a hard-core fan of the Buffyverse for many years, so the ending of the canonical series is a really big deal for me. And it did not dissapoint; actually, the final volume was very rewarding and satisfying. My personal favorite is everything Fray-related and Faith-related. I loved the art--as I always love the art by Georges Jeanty. The only thing that slightly spoiled the treat (spoiler alert) is that there is no mention and, hence, closure about a certain huge-importance let-it-stay-unnamed prophecy from Angel TV Series; I really hoped it would be used. Otherwise, I love it so much! Thank you, Joss, for this fantastic journey!

For the final installment of Dark Horse's Buffy I expected to have more closure with the Scooby core. Aside from that, I enjoyed the story and how they tied back in the Fray storyline.

I loved this ending for the Buffy comics. After ending the show twice, this third conclusion was very satisfying. I was glad to see all the beloved characters again and how they’ve grown. The story overall was well thought out. It didn’t feel rushed, and the writing was right on. Now if we could get the actors to play this out—it would make a great reunion movie. ;) In the meantime, I’m happy to read this again.

If you enjoyed seasons 10 & 11 of Buffy you will probably not enjoy this one. It seems that Mr. Whedon played a larger role in the writing of the final season and that he did not like much of how the plot or characters were developing. Do yourself a favour - ignore this one.

The two Philip Collins radio picture-books, "Radios Redux" and "Radios: The Golden Age", are both ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKINGLY STUNNING. I have never seen radios look so good, and I am a collector. You will want to rip every one of the pages out and frame them.These are mainly of the tabletop marbelized colored-plastic radios of the 1930's and 40's - the most good-looking of all the table radios, Ever. Catalin, bakelite, plaskon, and whatever other brand names they had for the plastics of the day - all seem to be represented.Both of these books are equally, truly, EYE CANDY.

This book is very well done, with many exquisite color photographs (presented in a sort of portrait-style) of dozens and dozens of radios, BUT BE ADVISED: its focus is bakelite and plastic radios - those bright, multi-colored, smallish ones, often with the kitschy designs.I was expecting much more coverage of the beautiful old wood cabinets, cathedrals, and consoles, with their rich veneers, marquetry, and grill cloth - there's nary a one of those in this book. So if your interests are wood radios, I would not recommend this book at all. But if you like the bakelite and plastic variety, then I would highly recommend this book.

Philip Collins is a British radio collector who lives in Los Angeles. His two books are just breath-taking - and show that US radio manufacturers had style very much at heart when they designed plastic cases for their radios in the 1930's and onward. I have enormous respect for what they were able to do to combine functionality with looks. The colours were fantastic (though I am not sure that they would pass today's health and safety rules on the use of heavy metals. I'm guessing the bright yellow colours, for instance, must be as a result of cadmium. But none of this detracts from the book....something that would actually look beautiful on an iPad or a Kindle Fire. I believe the book is now out of print, but resellers got me a copy in less than a week. Highly recommended.

Assessing the success of Special Purpose Vehicles (SPZs), Moberg evaluates their general welfare contribution, not just that of the stand-alone SEZ. Notably, Moberg employs a political economy point of view rather than a more traditional macroeconomic assessment.Moberg concentrates on institutions and policies from the perspective of the knowledge and incentive problems. The knowledge problem is one of government’s insufficient fundamental knowledge to improve on the market through policy making. Failure to sufficiently solve this problem results in misallocated resources. The incentive problem is of the misalignment between political actors’ incentives and those that promote general welfare. Misaligned incentives permit rent-seeking behavior, often in the guise of welfare promotion, and exploitation of resources by those controlling the levers of regulation, their cronies and those willing and able to pay for rent-seeking advantages.Analysis of SEZ general welfare implications is more complex than I had realized. Moberg comes to the perverse yet straightforward observation that policy makers can use SEZs to advance exactly the opposite economic outcomes from what the SEZ itself purports to resolve. Since SEZ costs inflicted on the non-SEZ community are opaque, rent-seeking policy makers can leverage non-SEZ lack of awareness to forestall opposition.The knowledge problem is best resolved through private decision-making with respect to locations and constituents. The incentive problem resolution comprises limited corruption (selfish officials self-interested in beneficial policies), democracy (officials accountable for the economic outcomes of their policies) and private zones (with robust rule of law, private actors act in their self-interest, which is that of society).SEZs can benefit general welfare by:· Fostering backward linkages: SEZ constituents can purchase inputs and services from domestic non-SEZ agents. However, there appears little evidence for such development. In fact, Moberg says, “the great paradox of SEZs: Countries use them to promote sectors in which they do not have a comparative advantage, such as manufacturing or high technology, rather than agriculture. As a result, SEZ investors are unlikely to find domestically produced inputs for their production. Meanwhile, sectors such as agriculture, where backward linkages can more easily be formed, are the least popular sectors to expand.”· Public policy test beds: SEZ’s are good “tools to identify the best policies and spread them more widely through the country”. I was particularly intrigued by her observation that SEZs can be used as “Petri dishes for economic policies, places where it [a benevolent government] can observe policies’ effects before introducing them in the country as a whole.” In the case study of China, Moberg illustrates the use of test beds as Petri dishes. Moberg’s makes the point that China’s application of the test-bed Petri dish theory relies on a unified government.· SEZs as showcases: The showcase argument is that a government can use SEZs to demonstrate policy effects to the general public, particularly the results of the policies it wants to implement more broadly. This is a useful way to advance regulatory liberalization.“A pervasive and fundamental problem in economic development is that governing elites often do not have an incentive to promote economic progress. Market-distorting and anticompetitive policies benefit government officials, who can offer privileges to business and demand favors in return.” At their best, SEZs overcome the incentives of powerful elites otherwise against reforms that would limit or end their rent-seeking opportunities by providing them with higher payoffs from economic liberalization. Liberalize a small part of the country such that a favoring minority can pass reforms that may reach a majority agreement. Modest reforms are less threatening to reform-averse officials.Moberg specifies two initial conditions for an SEZ to appear in a hostile political environment: political decentralization (local policy-makers can do something that central ones won’t or can’t) and fiscal decentralization (local elites have an incentive to pursue reform). Otherwise, governments can maximize rents by using SEZs to appease those pushing for reform and avoiding broad economic liberalization.The case studies of India, China and the Dominican Republic provide interesting perspectives on and insights from the theory. India is the case of SEZ failure. My take-away is that endemic corruption can be an insurmountable barrier. China is the SEZ success story. Local decentralization from central authority and official promotions and demotions based on economic success or failure led to Chinese local leaders “engaging in something of a tournament of economic performance with their SEZs.” Both the knowledge and the incentive problems were sufficiently ameliorated such that political and fiscal (specific tax revenue sharing – a municipal property right) decentralization could spawn more and larger SEZs. The larger SEZs, such as the Shenzen municipality, afford breadth and diversity making rent-seeking more difficult and affording greater general welfare. Isolated areas of reform turned into an avalanche of liberalization. Lastly, the Dominican Republic is an interesting case of limited success.

Moberg argues that SEZs that offer little more than fiscal incentives—a practice already under scrutiny by the World Trade Organization for unfairly subsidizing exports—can no longer compete with zones that offer more comprehensive reforms. Successful SEZS must, like China’s, go broad and deep. Moberg also agrees with the World Bank that privately created and managed special jurisdictions generally outperform public ones."The Political Economy of Special Economic Zones" offers a valuable resource for policy makers, people working in SEZ-related industries, and serious students of this burgeoning field. Good book for students of stitching, embroidery and the role of women's work in the early days of stitch and embroidery

This book is important and fascinating. It is an important piece of art history, as well as the history of embroidery. It never seemed to me to be dismissive of the medium and said instead that what women did in the past was eventually denigrated by others, e.g., the guilds, church officials (not the author). This book is a part of the reinstatement of women's place in art history, as well as fiber/needle arts.I say it is fascinating because I am very interested in how people lived and created art, throughout time. And it is of interest because it tells what happened to a beautiful art form and how it became devalued by a mostly male-controlled art world, except in certain settings.There are other books to read about the subject, that will round out the appreciation of needle arts, including "Embroidered Textiles" by Sheila Paine. I have read dozens of books on this subject, including books on the tools of the trade, ancient and new.I embroider and I vote, so I vote this book "excellent".

As an AVID embroiderer and feminist, I had see this book often over the years but had never gotten around to reading it. Ugh. Terrible! I want my money back.The nicest thing to say is that it is very dated, and for the time, it was probably important. I just found it to be a very bad, boring, repetitive study that really doesn't say much. She really just says the same thing over and over and over: Embroidery has "signified" femininity through the ages. That's about it, folks. Well, we learn that sometimes this has been an empowering thing, but mostly it has been a way of keeping women in their place and submissive, etc. Occasionally women have rebelled against it. That's really it. That is it. I don't think I read more than three chapters though I scanned the rest.What I found so offensive is that Parker is clearly not an embroiderer herself, doesn't know anything about the medium, and really couldn't care less about it. I was amazed at how totally insensitive and dismissive of it she is. It is the subject of her book after all. But her attitude is pretty much of a distanced, "scientific" observor reporting on something she had absolutely zero knowledge or understanding of herself.If you are an embroiderer, do not look to this book to tell you anything. I learned zilch except maybe a historical fact or two. A really good book about women and embroidery has yet to be written.

If you've ever looked at samplers or thought of the ways in which needlework shaped the lives of women for centuries (mostly in the negative sense), you will enjoy this book immensely. Parker takes one of the central tasks expected of women in the 18th and 19th centuries and shows how women used needlework as an outlet to express feelings of dismay and dislike. It just goes to show you: where there's a will, there's a way.If you enjoy learning about women's lives in the past, and have either an interest or an aversion to needlework yourself, I think you will enjoy this most unusual history.

Wow, I'm impressed with this book. Fascinating, well researched and detailed history of women and embroidery. This is a must read for anyone, especially women, who embroider as their primary artistic expression. As an artist who is working within this medium to excavate and reveal the living present of misogyny, this book has enriched my understanding of the work I do. Highly highly recommended.
