Great walk back in time. Very informative! Made me seek out an old haunt of mine this past weekend. Ran into some old friends and danced the night away.

Most people tend to recoil at either hearing or reading the word "disco" but this book takes the subject and puts into a very interesting sociological context. It takes the time frame of disco from the mid seventies to its demise in the early eighties and threads disco through its importance in ethnicity, sexual orientation and social class consciousness. Good reading if you either loved disco or hated it.

Informative and entertaining; a fantastic book for anyone interested not only in disco but also American culture in the 70s. Echols is a fantastic author and scholar, if you enjoy this book, you should check out some of her other works. Highly recommended!

Alice Echols's book on disco's part in the 70s cultural revolution is fantastic. Although each section focuses on a different population (such as women, gay men, and rock fans), she never allows you to forget about the other groups as she goes along, weaving together a complex and intricate view of disco and 1970s culture.

It's great to find a book that guides us to achieving difficult skills. Gelb/Buzan shows how important making mistakes is to creating success. The books isn't a complete book on juggling, but I don't see any need for more pages than is written.I haven't mastered 3 ball Juggling, but I am comfortable with it. I started 2 in 1 hand which is the basis of 4 ball juggling.It's really demanding on your throwing technique and less on your sense of sight. Mastering 4 balls is a totally different dimension because it pushes you to your ambidexterity limit. Just don't give up and be aware of your technique.

I'm disappointed to learn that this book is out of print as it is a neglected gem. I don't juggle and I have no desire to juggle BUT I teach and consult a wide range of people in a wide range of industries and settings. I'm always looking for creative ways in which to engage audiences. This book has been a reliable source of inspiration for more than a decade!I read this book once a year on average - just to give me a whack on the head. There are exercises that I've used to wonderful effect when teaching classes on public speaking as they get to some of the roots of fear.From their own experience as jugglers, the authors apply core mental concepts to learning how to let go of the need for perfection and both enjoy and learn from failure. Their approach deserves the accolade "fresh."This is one of my Top 25 favorite self-improvement / motivational books.

I was amazed that I could do 3 ball juggling just from reading this book...of course, it took me some time and effort. But I did not expect that a written text book could teach and coach the development of motor skills.I was also pleasantly surprised at the emphasis on relaxation techniques...which were very useful, and it felt awesome to be able to develope some techniques by reading a written text book.I always believed that motor skills can be taught more effectively using a video or with a personal coach. So I was a little skeptical about being able to learn juggling from a book, but I really wanted to see if I could actually learn juggling on my own.I have absolutely great respect for the author...for his technique of learning to learn.I even tried to teach my staff juggling using the same premise and philosophy as this book. It was great to see them realize that they can in fact learn anything...and we were juggling A4 sheets of paper (crumpled up into paper balls)!

If you want to achieve your full potential in anything you are ever to do, whoever you are, look no further. This book helps with just that. Written in a playful tone, and with practical examples from the game of juggling, you will find all the confidence, courage and mental skills to do anything you aspire. As the book also teaches juggling, it's style will feel a bit unfamiliar to most readers, but considering how it improved my life I MUST give it a 5 star. Check out books about accellerated learning by the same authors as well.

A wonderful book. I am a very experienced juggler and found Gelb and Buzan's use of juggling as a metaphor for achieving success quite refreshing. The book is thoughtful and insightful and is readily accessable to jugglers and non-jugglers alike.

This is more an inspirational book than a good source of juggling information. In common with many books of its kind, it stresses the (alleged) benefits of juggling skills while shorting readers on technical advice. Better to read a purely inspirational book if you need that, or a book on juggling technique if your interests lie that way.

I can juggle 3 balls but I struggle with 4. Maybe I didn't read the book properly or something.

Great. Bought this one after I was completely ripped off by that piece of garbage the AAOS calls their EMR textbook. I'm already an EMR and am just using this as a reference and also to train lifeguards. This one is fantastic. The organization is exceptional. The design and illustrations are extremely modern. The information is completely up to date and new advances in pre-hospital medicine have been added. The book is extremely thorough. It definitely seems like the authors cared very much about the quality when they wrote it. There are some gaps in information in the patient assesment chapter and that's why I knocked off two stars. Maybe it didn't get edited accidentally because they forgot to talk about the airway step in the primary assessment and barely talked about the primary for responsive patients. This really bothers me as that is some pretty important information. Other then that, the book is fantastic; This is the best and most comprehensive EMR text out there.

Received this book for my academy class that I am in and needed it for. The book that I got is the same book that everyone else had in my class, except it does not come with any answer guides in the back of the book which the rest of my classes did. Could not study properly because I did not have answer keys for the tests. Not a great buy.

The story of fortunes made and fortunes lost is told backwards and forwards, circling around Eleanor Catton’s central insight that the pursuit of riches is a neverending story, revolving everywhere around us like the astral array. As she writes about her story: “…his narrative had been further convoluted by countless interruptions, clarifications, and echoes—all chasing one another, as endless circles, going round. What a convoluted picture it was—and how difficult to see—in its entirety!”The characters who scrabble for gold in the Antipodean mud—and those who prey on them—are often venal, sometimes self-sacrificing, or both. This book immediately caught my eye based on its unique setting and structure and fun plot, and the fact that it won the Man Booker Prize. I decided to get this book (got the kindle version) despite reading some reviews that the book was "too long" or that characters "weren't developed" and I am SO GLAD that I did! I loved it! thrilling and engaging, with many interesting and diverse characters. The astrological structure superimposed over the plot added a larger meaning/purpose to the book that took it beyond a classic (albeit engaging) murder/blackmail mystery. I also had a very basic understanding of astrology but didn't feel that hampered my understand or enjoyment of the book. I enjoyed reading every second of it, and it was a very quick read despite its length due to the fact that most of it is engaging dialogue between characters. You might not get a super fairy-tale-ending resolution to all the character's storylines, but Catton's writing is truly brilliant. A perk of reading this on a kindle, is that you can click on the many character's names and be given a background on who they are and what astrological sign/planet they are associated with, and also be able to translate/define vocabulary words that are specific to New Zealand. I wish there was a translator for Maori though! I had to type the passages into google translate on my phone, not sure why the language wouldn't be included in the Kindle translator. Overall: Very glad I read this book!! It is so complex, I could easily see myself reading it again and still getting new things out of it.

"The Luminaries" by Eleanor Catton, is such a book. Short-listed for the Booker Prize, this novel, that weighs in at over 800 pages, takes a bit of a commitment to get into and, once invested, it must "grab" you to continue. I got half-way through and then had to have a "talk with myself" about continuing. It just isn't my kind of novel and continuing was going to take too much of my precious reading time. Yet, I was far enough in to see that its innovative style of folding back in on itself will appeal to many readers. It's like a complicated pastry; the plot is kneaded and folded to produce the confection intended. This is not a novel for readers who like their plots to be linear.Catton's writing style is beautifully lush and vividly descriptive. Her descriptions of the myriad characters are wonderfully rendered both in the descriptions of their physical selves and of their inner selves. Catton also creates a unique and interesting setting of a New Zealand gold mining town in the mid-nineteenth century.I'm posting this candidly honest review to help other readers ascertain if they are the type of reader who will enjoy this unique novel, or not.
