C. S. Lewis once observed, "Of all the tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive". This book is a deeply moving coming of age story about a young woman struggling to understand and accept herself and her family's inability to allow her to do so. Cameron takes us on her hero's journey of sorts as she tells us about her life and struggles as a young lesbian woman living in rural Montana in the early 1990's. To her credit Ms Danforth does not cast the Christians in this story as mean cold-hearted bigots seeking to destroy gay people (although sadly, there is no shortage of such people in the world). Instead she presents them as people who genuinely care about Cameron and who operate from a sincere belief that they are working for her own good and that of her fellow "disciples" at Promise. She also illustrates the disastrous and harmful outcomes than can result from trying to force people to be who they are not. This is a book I wish many Christians so immovably opposed to accepting LGBTQ people as being who we are rather than some confused souls who are trapped in sin or "rebellion" against god, and that by choice.

READ THIS BOOK. I don't really know what to say about this book, except that I did not go into it with high hopes but I had a hard time putting it down and read it in a matter of hours.From the booklist review, anyone reading this should know at least the major plot points, but I apologize in advance if this review contains any spoilers.The book starts off with a punch to the gut, and immediately drags you into the rich and compelling story of Cameron Post. The night Cam kisses her best friend for the first time, her parents are killed in an accident. Understandably, Cam links those two events in her mind and is wracked with guilt and shame over her attraction to other girls, and tries to suppress it, but she can't. When she and her best friend fall in love, they are able to keep their relationship a secret until being discovered by the best friend's brother. Cam's Aunt Ruth then ships her off to a religious conversion camp to "pray away the gay".Cam's story is one of love, loss, confusion, religion, and healing, all bundled together. Danforth has a compelling way of weaving words that draws you in and creates an impact on the reader. The realities of growing up LGBT in a strict religious family are well fleshed out in the novel, through Cam's relationship with Aunt Ruth and the leaders and counselors at the conversion camp Promise, as well as in Cam's own internal struggle between what her fundamentalist religious community tells her and what she knows to be true.

This was an unbelievably good book. Engaging me as few others have in years, I have a new title to add to my list of most influential YA books.Intersectional, nuanced, realistic, poetic, crisp, and beautifully written, this book has it all. I have too many feelings to criticise it right now, though a hint of Cameron 's future would have been nice. I guess maybe the author could have been harsher on the evangelicals, but the book has a focus on compassion.Wise and pure and wonderful, this is perfect for anyone trying to understand queer people or teenagers, or even just find something good in life or themselves. It also beats the daylights out of John Green's work. There are no cheap jokes or held punches here: just art, truth, and beauty.

I did not come across The Miseducation of Cameron Post until there was a controversy of the book being banned from a high school reading list for incoming ninth graders. Being a college student and English major, it immediately piqued my interest as to what all the commotion was. It was to the extent that the author of the book, Emily M Danforth, even came forth to make a statement. When that happened, I knew I had to read this book so I came to Amazon and placed an order right away. I have personally never read an LGBTQ novel before so I was apprehensive. I read the back and one of the first things it states is that her parents die when hours earlier she was kissing a girl. I hadn’t even cracked open the front cover and immediately the plot already had a twist. This book was already intimidating being almost 500 pages. However, once I started reading it, it was hard to put down. I took this book everywhere with me as I followed Cameron Post through her trials and tribulations of trying to be a lesbian who was also a part of the youth group in a conservative town until her eventual “punishment” of being sent away to a gay-away camp.Danforth’s descriptions of the setting and characters really contribute to a visual and sensory experience for the reader. You will feel like you are right there with Cameron Post. What did disappoint me is the lack of closure between the characters and the ending. I wish we had found out what happened to Irene – Cameron’s first kiss – and Coley – Cameron’s first sexual experiences. We see the journey Cameron goes through only to be robbed of what happened to the girls who put her in compromising situations. I did enjoy Cameron’s inner conflicts about her sexuality and realizing that boys – Jamie – aren’t for her. It gave such a great perspective on homosexuality and coming out. The end just felt like a dead end, I won’t spoil it, but it feels stagnant rather than satisfying. You’ll have to see for yourself. I recommend this book to any and everyone in the end. Prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster. I also recommend you carry a box of tissues with you for the darker moments in the book and try not to punch any walls when it feels like all the odds are against Cameron. The author should truly be praised for writing such a thought provoking and moving piece of literature.

This book was required reading material for a graduate-level program evaluation course. Throughout my many years of being a student, I have had the sincere displeasure of reading some of the most boring textbooks in existence. This one, however, takes the cake. It does so in finding the perfect balance between small font, thin pages, minimal white space and maximum words per page layout.The absence of an eBook option is further insult to injury.The authors do little to reinforcement of key concepts in a succinct fashion. Truly I believe there was an incentive to pack in as many words as possible. Entire chapters could be replaced with 2-3 pages of content.The book has a tone/pace which leads me to believe the authors had intentionally deployed in an effort to subliminally coerce students to hear Ben Stein as they slowly navigate from page to page to never-ending page.If you're reading this, it's likely because some misguided faculty at your own higher learning institution has made the terrible, unfortunate decision to use this book as a part of their curriculum. If that is the case I offer you one small bit of advice: Rent this book thus denying the authors and publisher an added sale. Because truly, unless you are on the market for the worst textbook on the planet, no one deserves earnings from the sale of this text. BONUS: If you rent, you might get an already marked up copy from the poor souls who rented before you. Just ignore the tiny scribbles pleading for help and for the book to end.

The information is presented in an organized manner, though the subject matter is dry. I found it helpful to skip to the ends of chapters and read the important bullets and use the prompting questions there to go back and skim the chapter for the pertinent information.The book aside, I genuinely did not enjoy the Kindle presentation of this. Maybe because I rented it, but it could be the same for buying it, I could not view it on more than one device. Being that it is a textbook this was rather terrible to find out halfway through the semester when I was separated from my normal laptop. I normally love the Kindle setup, but this book isn't readable on the Kindle itself or the online reader, an app must be used which would be alright if it had the same functionality. That being said, the app does allow for note taking and highlighting which are nice.

I can't believe this book has gotten so many low ratings. It is clear, provides good examples, and has excellent diagrams that explain the few paragraphs before it.I have been teaching ten years and am currently in graduate school for higher education administration. I enjoy the book. If you are not a teacher, however, I can see why it might be difficult to see the reason for it if you have nothing to relate it to from your work life experiences.Only suggestions: peruse the chapters first for the diagrams rather than highlighting and breaking it down yourself first--will save you lots of time. Also, the concepts are usually clear enough that you can skip many of the example paragraphs they throw in each section.

This text was pretty exhaustive but they should have included several examples of evaluations, executive reports, etc. It would have been interesting to study the types of evaluations and read some mock or real evaluation reports or mock journal entries listing information gathering processes, focus group meetings, etc. in each style.They used a few limited journal entry examples but something that really lays out the whole process would have been better. The book is quite technical, perhaps at the expense of overlooking the energy and passion that evaluators need for themselves and to bring out in their stakeholders. Our professor actually had to use an additional book (Action Research by Stringer) to add that component. At the price we paid this text should have also covered more of that perspective. This book is ridiculously expensive. Surely they could lower the prices a bit and still make a great profit. I think that students being hit with huge tuition costs are getting tired of these outrageous book prices. The authors really know their stuff and I learned a lot from the book.I don't begrudge them for making a profit for such a scholarly work but I'd love to know how they (the publishers)can justify such a cost for a book.All in all a good text especially covering the component parts of evaluations, types of evaluations, evolution of the science, and the ethical issues that evaluators face.

A very comprehensive approach to program evaluation. The reading level may not be suitable for some readers as it takes an experienced reader to navigate through the terminology. That being said, this edition does a great job of organizing the chapters (historical, content, and application analyses). A great tool for graduate students who are studying program evaluation or for those with interest in the field. Overall, I rate this volume received a B-.

This is the only cupcake book you will ever need. Whether you have a cupcake maker or not this is a fantastic collection of recipes and icings.

Review for the actual book and condition of it is what the seller said it would be, used very good condition, I think is what was listed but regardless, the book inside is perfect. No rips, tears or markings of any kind, looks brand new. However on the outside of the covers both front and back you can tell its used. There are little indents all over that you normally get on soft back books over time and you can just tell its used. But even for being used it looks fantastic. The book was kept in very very good condition!! Being able to see it in person knowing how it looks, I would definitely still buy it. The seller delivered exactly what he said it was used very good condition. For the contents of the book, so far I am very pleased!! I bought this for my 11yr old daughter who is just starting out on her love for baking things. I got her the Babycakes multi treat baker and wanted her to have this book as well. In the beginning of the book it has, How to Use the Babycakes Cupcake Maker along with how to store the cupcakes and other treats as well. It tells you what baking items you should have in your pantry at all times to make the different treats. It gives you tips and tricks on decorating and frosting and alternatives to frosting, also how you can display your cupcakes or if you want theme party cupcakes, you have 12 different themes to choose from! It has so many cupcake recipes to choose from but it also has cheesecakes, pies, tarts, muffins, glazes, lunch, supper and dinner ideas/recipes as well!! It is also easy to understand and follow through on. Some recipes can be so hard to follow and the recipes in here aren't. Which I am very pleased with because I know my daughter will be able to follow the directions. Very happy with this purchase!! You will not be dissapointed with this book!!! It will also give you GREAT mother and daughter bonding time.. To me that is the best part!!

The 7th grader I mentor was assigned Madam CJ Walker as a subject for a history fair project. This little book is a gem. We read it together in a short amount of time and got the gist of why this woman is famous. There are plenty of pictures (ala graphic novel) and the language is simple without being cheesy. Great short read. I also bought a longer biography, but I bet this is the only one that gets read.

Disappointing

I used this text in the classroom teaching ESL learners and it was quite useful. The story in itself is compelling to read. This is a true rags to riches story that also reveals an unknown world to many students today. Madam C. J. Walker's struggle for freedom was fought in a different way than what we usually have seen in the lives of other famous black people. Besides having an inspiring message, the text is useful for identifying main idea and important details, summarizing, paraphrasing, and sequence of events. I highly recommend it.

In the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack, there was an understandable upswell of patriotic public display. Naturally, the United States flag was a central image in many of these expressions. Hollywood's support for the war effort is well-known, but less well-known is the organized response of the periodical press. As part of The United We Stand campaign, conceived by Hearst publicist Paul MacNamara to support eh war effort (and to sell magazines), roughly 500 magazines featured the U.S. flag on their covers in July 1942. Peter Kreitler's book, seven inches tall and five and one-half inches wide, is a small gem that features more than 100 of his collection's 200 United We Stand magazine covers. Aside from the short introduction, a few inserts and the index, the book has no other text. Each magazine cover is allowed to speak for itself, which is, after all, exactly how magazine covers are intended to work. Certainly, this book has current interest given the renewed emphasis on the World War II generation and the patriotic displays of the flag (even the use of the slogan, United We Stand ) in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. However, this book has qualities that go beyond these points. The contemporary reader, as if transported to a newsstand in the gold age of the magazine, becomes engrossed in an experience that has its own integrity aside form surveying the magazines many and varied interpretations of the flag. It is fascinating to examine the 1942 covers of industry standards like Time, The New Yorker and Vogue, among others, and compare them to today s. Fantastic comic book covers, like Master Comics, Looney Toons and Captain Marvell to name a few, jump out at the reader. Perhaps most fascinating, sometimes most poignant, are the covers of long-lost magazines indicative of another era, Country Gentleman, Indian Motorcycle News, and Quiz Kid Magazine are a few of the many. No less engaging is discovering names like H.L. Mencken, T.S. Eliot and E.B. White among the contributors listed on the covers. Appropriately enough, Kreitling's magazine collection has come to the attention of the Smithsonian Institute, which will exhibit nearly 100 of them from March 22 through October 28 in the National Museum of American History. Planned in the spring of 2001 as an exhibit to mark the 60th anniversary of the United We Stand campaign, the events of September 11 have since imbued this exhibition with a significance that transcends its original intent. Appropriately, a portion of the proceeds for this book will be donated to the American Red Cross. Both Delivered Fast ANd just what I was looking for.

After the attack on Pear Harbor, Paul MacNamara, a PR man for Hearst magazines, had a clever idea. On July four of 1942 why not get the Nation's major magazines and comics to show their patriotism (and sell more copies) by printing Old Glory on their covers. Nearly three hundred titles joined in and just over a hundred of them are shown in this lovely book.The covers are from the author's collection and it is a pity that there are not more shown. Considering that most of the covers show a flag flying in the wind it is interesting to see how the magazine's designers handled the cover layout, some titles (Modern Industry page 86) used a flat design flag and still produced an eye-catching cover.I would not normally mention cutting up a book but many of the covers that have a dominant flag look so nice that they would really look good mounted on a colored background and framed. They are mostly four by five inches. Maybe something to do for this years July four!

This little book reviews many covers of major US magazines from July 1942 which carried the US flag celebrating the first Independence Day after Pearl Harbor. The patriotism of that wartime era is eerily reminiscent of the wave of patriotism reaching across our Nation after 11 September. I would hope that in July 2002 we will see a similar expression of national unity. God bless America!
