About the Author

Anthony Q. Artis (prn. /ant-nee art-iss/) originally hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and has made his home in New York City for most of the last 15 years. There he has honed his skills as a straight up digital guerrilla. He has worked professionally in positions as diverse as producer, gaffer, cinematographer, and narrative projects and survived more low-budget shoots than he cares to admit. His feature films and TV shows have screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, the IFP Market, Slamdance, Cinequest, as well as on MTV, The Independent Film Channel and The special-FX make up, sound mixer, and location manager just to name a few. Anthony is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Since graduating, he has crewed and produced a variety of television, documentary Education Channel. Most notably, he produced the feature film, Shelter which won first prize for Emerging Narratives at the 2003 IFP Market along with many other awards on the festival circuit. Anthony can be seen in full guerrilla action as Associate Producer, Gaffer, and 2nd Unit DP in the feature documentary, Paper Chasers, which chronicles the hip-hop music industry and the down and dirty making of a low-budget guerrilla doc. Through the years Anthony has organized numerous student film festivals and trained hundreds of aspiring guerrilla filmmakers for major institutions, including New York University, New York City's famed LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, and Baltimore County Public Schools. Anthony is presently the manager of the Film and TV Production Center at N.Y.U.'s Tisch School of the Arts where he coordinates the technical training and production equipment for all film and TV students. He most recently launched the Down and Dirty DV Podcast on iTunes and is currently producing an instructional series of guerrilla filmmaking books, DVD's, and boot camps. What a delight! I am overjoyed to have discovered that the Shut Up and Shoot Freelance Video Guide is vastly different than (and equally riveting as) the Shut Up and Shoot Documentary Guide. Although there are occasional parallels, the Shut Up and Shoot Freelance Video Guide offers unique material pertaining to any repeated topic. For instance, the lighting set-up diagrams are revisited, but with new structures not previously outlined in the Documentary Guide.Artis's book starts by covering a wide spectrum of illustrations, including digital file charts (p. 27), camera guides (with relatively current models listed) (pp. 7-19), gain range charts complete with illustrative photos (pp. 33-34), peaking diagrams (p. 39), focal length diagrams and illustrations (pp. 46-47), and much more. Artis' even dedicates discussion on green screening techniques (with additional coverage on chromate green screening).Later in the book, Artis dedicates an entire chapter to audio, covering various microphones, boom operation, wireless microphones, mixers, and the digital audio sweet spot. He even diagrams different audio set-ups dependent on (1) one or more types of mics available for the shoot and (2) the number of subjects (people) in the take.The highlights of the book were threefold for me: first, the book focused chapter by chapter on various freelance projects, including promotional/marketing videos, wedding videography, live event videography, and music videos. These discussions oftentimes came with any of the following: example outlines, example script formats, illustrative storyboards, lighting and audio tips, project details, detailed budgets, and numerous other tools and tips.The second major highlight was the emphasis on stylistic tips, such as how to collect and incorporate b-roll, how to utilize multiple camera angles, how to manage text, how to sync color, how to create lens flares, how to maximize translucent backgrounds (such as curtains and glass), and how to acquire many other wonderful stylistic elements such as the famous Dutch angle, frame-in-a-frame technique, and numerous others.The third key feature of the book for me was the chapter by Benjamin Ahr Harrison called Music Videos that laid out the process for making music videos in a very structured, well developed manner. His approach includes excellent location-based outlines, example shotlists, schedules, syncing tips, and compositing tips, as well as thoughtful examples of how to break down the music into its basic structure.This book has ample production value, indeed, and Artis succeeds remarkably in producing yet another entertaining, aesthetic--and completely unique product! Equally enjoyable are his Lynda.com videos that can be accessed through a month-to-month subscription. In these video tutorials, he covers a range of material from lighting to camera and audio management to documentary shoots. He also has the Shut Up and Shoot DVD series, which are next on my list of Artis's superior and highly professional products. I assure that you will glean a diverse range of stylistic and technical insights from this book.

This is a good book for people getting into video. Anthony presents solid information in a clear style that's easy to grasp and applicable to many situations. Many references to video gear are dated, the bulk of the information is still valid, and make this book worth reading. Note that the book covers a lot of ground, and is more of an "introduction" to different aspects of video production. That said, Anthony does a good job of walking you through common situations that you will likely encounter. If you choose to specialize in a specific area (audio, lighting, directing, etc.), you will want to look further for more specific information. Regardless, this is a good reference for anyone getting into video production. Also, check out Anthony's book on documentary video.

If you're a no-nothing with a new cam and want to avoid foisting MEGO-inducing home movies of your ballerina grand-daughter on your neighbors, this book contains the advice you need. Today's cams have built-in technology to compensate for our lack of technical knowledge about which lens to use, what level of white point to specify, and so on. But the best cam can't salvage a boring video. This book informs you about what people want to see, and what they want to avoid. Your best friend can't impart such advice without hurting your feelings. All the more reason to invest in the counsel of a straight-talking, knowledgeable stranger. Especially when his writing style is engaging.

This is the best of the 10 or so books I have on the subject. The author is hilarious, the book is current (2012), very informative, and written with the very practical issues of video in mind. He covers all the important issues to a reasonable extent. If I were to have only one book on video - this would definitely be the one. Also be sure to watch his Lynda.com tutorial. Highly recommended.

If you have a kid that wants to be a filmmaker this would make a great gift or if you want an up-to-date look at guerilla video production circa 2012 this book deserves a look.

Rania Abouzeid’s account of the conflict in Syria is a remarkably well-written history that brings a compelling human feel to the absolute hell that has been Syria since the 2011 uprising. Tracing the conflict through the actions and perspectives of several diverse participants, Abouzeid’s non-fiction narrative provides the reader with a highly credible view of this complex and convoluted war.With differing allegiances and distinct motivations, the characters are followed as the uprising begins with non-violent demonstrations, through the development of a full-scale war between the Assad regime and the not well-united opposition. At every point the story is very well written in a highly accessible style. This is certainly a hard story, but a relatively easy read for a wide range of audiences, those who have followed Syria news carefully over the years, and those who have only passing knowledge of the events.The author brings us into the mindsets of a number of key characters, including those who are driven by democratic secular ideals and those who are moved by strict religious ideology, those who have served in the Syrian Army, and those who have suffered in its prisons. We share the mindset of leaders as well as that of ordinary participants: children, students, politicians, grandmothers and soldiers.Abouzeid does not attempt to provide a neutral academic history of the Syrian war from all sides. As a journalist viewed by the Assad regime as an enemy, the author had limited access to regime-held territory. She chooses to air, very proficiently, the spectrum of the anti-regime opposition. Specifically the reader sees the democratic secular side, the Free Syrian Army as well as the various shades of the Islamic opposition, including al-Qaeda. This book is a “must-read” for all seeking to understand Syria and to be prepared for what lies ahead.

This wasn't an easy read...but it was a rewarding one. The author chronicles the Syrian civil war not as a series of events but as the intertwined journeys (both figurative and literal) of multiple individuals, participants willing and unwilling. She spends enough time with each of her key subjects that none is given short shrift, and none so outweighs the others that it becomes his/her story alone. I'd like to pretend that, upon reading this book, I suddenly have some real understanding of the Syrian civil war, but what it's really done is show me how little I really still know, how much there is yet to know. The approach of following individuals, some of which are sympathetic, some much less so, some perhaps not at all, rather than simply chronicling events like a textbook, brings home the actual impact of the war in much more affecting and moving ways, I think. Highly, highly recommended.

This book was such an incredible and interesting and heart breaking book. There are passages that are quite difficult to read but it is worth it 100% I generally don't read books like this because I get lost and confused in the history portions and the heaviness of all that BUT this book reads like a novel and teaches you along the way. It is so well written and following the people in the book will stay with you. It really projects the notion that we are all people and what is happening in Syria is such a humanitarian fight and a human rights issue.I highly recommend this book - I read it in a few days the first time and will definitely pick it up again soon! Buy it! Read it! Incredible!

This was a fabulous book. I know very little about the war in Syria, but I was lucky enough to visit Damascus in 2010, a gorgeous city full of interesting, lively, fun-loving people. This book makes clear the complexities of that war, but mainly the impact on individuals whom she follows and whose stories she tells so beautifully. I felt a new appreciation for the many sides of this conflict, including the Islamic State. Well worth reading, and beautifully written. The individuals she follows and what they have been through are not easily forgotten. It speaks to the horrors of war and the resilience of those caught up in those horrors.

Abouzeid has done us all an immense service with her accounts of lives lived ( also lives ended) during the Syrian uprising & civil war - which still rages on. It’s an ordeal to read, at times: the suffering is so extreme, the killers of unarmed civilians are never brought to justice. But we get also the determination of survivors to salvage enough - just enough to keep going.

The author knows well that all the complexity of the situation in Syria can’t be summarized in a book multiple times the length of this one. She does what seems to me to be the next best logical thing: she turns a nearly microscopic focus on the lives of people who have had to live within its hardships. Her interviews cross segments of society, are intensely well documented, and allow the reader to become involved with each life in a sensitive way. Speaking as a reader who avoids the mainstream media’s attempts to reduce the complexities to so many column inches, I think this work is as excellent in making sense of how we are to understand Syria as any one could possibly be. Bravo!

A book of rich storytelling that lures the reader in with romantic descriptions of simple scenes and dishes that if written by a less skilled writer would be yawn inducing. The book is hard to put down but key is the reader’s willingness to meander lazily through paragraphs. So, probably not a good choice for the TLDR (to long didn’t read) crowd. The writing is captivating eliciting genuine emotions, effectively setting moods and settings along with sketching out recipes that are best not read while hungry.Serving as both a tribute to the southern culture and specifically the author’s mother, a wonderful cook, the result is a mesmerizing tale and a written record of some of her recipes. In his mother’s words these dishes are “Plain food seasoned well”. So while not fussy or fancy the recipes cover Southern basic dishes most of us are familiar with along with more exotic offerings all now safely preserved for future cooks.The recipes cover a wide range including Pecan Pie, Macaroni and Cheese (made with bacon), Sausage Gravy, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with Pear Preserves, Turtle Soup, Blackberry Cobbler, Baked Possum and Sweet Potatoes, Ham and Redeye Gravy over Diced Tomatoes, Real Biscuits, Fried Chicken, etc. Although there are no photograph of the finished recipes there is a sprinkling of family pictures that adds texture and context. Expect to be entertained and well-fed.

I dearly loved ALL OVER BUT THE SHOUTIN’. I read it multiple times, reviewed it for every ladies and literary club in Maury County and listened to it on audible. But THE BEST COOK IN THE WORLD is on a whole other level. It is funny, it is sad, his mama Margaret is a total delight. I am enjoying this so much. I am rationing it for myself because I dont want it to end. A wonderful literary gift.

Rick has done his best book yet. All of them are wonderful, some parts heartbreaking. But with this one we get delicious recipes, true family tales, find out how it is to live from meal to meal, and from hand to mouth. But some of the best parts are when Rick is his own hilarious self, and had me laughing out loud. Good for the soul! But the most important thing I bring out of reading this book, is the love for his Mama he has..and doesn’t care who knows how much he loves and respects her. I loved it.

I'm only about halfway through this book and I have one thing to say. I need to belong to this family.

Rick Bragg knows his craft like a well-loved song. His books come alive and even if there were no photographs, you would still see his people. In this one, your mind tastes the robust country food that sustained a family through hard times. If your ancestors were country folk like mine were, you will have moments of " I remember Granny..." all the way through. A greatly entertaining book.

So thankful for another book by Rick Bragg. I just love the way he writes! He revealed so much about his family and the way he was brought up through the words and recipes of his mother. I don't cook unless I absolutely have to so I probably won't be trying any of the recipes except for the potato salad, deviled eggs, and chocolate pie. I am ready for the next Rick Bragg book!

In this field guide, a sequel to the volume on Papilionidae, Pieridae, and Nymphalidae, Philip DeVries provides the first detailed treatment of over 250 species of Costa Rican butterflies in the family Riodinidae. Drawing from his extensive fieldwork, museum research, and surveys of scientific literature, DeVries presents the means to identify riodinid butterflies to the species level and gives an overview of their natural history. This guide illustrates nearly all of the Costa Rican species in color and provides a large sample of detailed line drawings and scanning electron micrographs of riodinid early stages for the first time ever. The book's coverage makes it useful for identifying riodinids throughout Mexico, Central America, and substantial portions of South America. The introductory chapter brings together a large body of material that applies directly to understanding riodinid butterflies in general. This is a wonderful book on butterflies, well-researched, more photos than you can review in a day, and a joy to behold. DeVires has provided the amateur, the professional or the everyday reader with all the known information of every butterfly found in Costa Rica. ( Yes, many of them get to the U.S.) DeVires' attention to detail, his photos and his comments demonstrate discipline ordinary writers can only envy. Also be warned, this is "Volume II" of his massive opus to our winged-friends. You will have to find "Volume I" on the used book sites. DeVires is now teaching and researching at the University of New Orleans, but at the end of the day, this volume and the previous volume will stand as testimony to what a field researcher can do. Buy this book.

This book, together with the vol.1, is a surprisingly complete publication of butterflies and thier natural history written by a single author. I put two volumes and Corbet/Pendlebury's Butterflies of West Malaysia on a book shelf'near at hand and look at the pages quite often. Now I am too old to go to Costa Rica to look at the butterflies, but the pages of this book gives me clear images of imaginary travel in the jungles in Costa Rica. I hope the 3rd voleume of this book on Hairstreaks/Blues or Skippers will be published in near future.

This hefty book is not a book you would like to drag along in you daypack (I tried, so I know). Yet, you will need it around (so, in your lodge or tent) when you're walking the rainforests and trying to make out what you've seen. It gives a clear description, added to clear drawings, of all the butterflies in the described families. That leads me to the only drawback: it's "just" a number of famlies described here, so the title is somewhat misleading. I'm eagerly awaiting the follow-up with the rest of the Lepidoptera, hoping that they will be covered in a similar way.

For all of you who are looking for a good quality source book for your art projects this is the book that will provide you, not only, with detailed drawings but also with beautiful color images of Costa Rican butterflies. I only wish there were more color photographs of the insect, but since I researched line drawings to incorporate them into design this book even exceeded my needs. It also helped my seven year old daughter to understand and appreciate the complexity of this species not only its beauty. The text is easy to understand and can make a good vacation reading

After traveling different countries and using various field guides, I can say that this one needs a lot of improvement. This book only covers a small section of species. The specimens that are used are tattered and some are difficult to use for ID purposes. In most guides, the photo description on the left usually include the page number for the text, this one doesn't. So, you have to check the name and look to the index to cross over to the text page. Speaking of names, they are only called by the Latin scientific name. This is probably not a big issue since most do not have one.Now, the text is very thorough and there have been a great deal of time and patience to acquire the information and data. I still would recommend this book despite its flaws. So far, it is probably the only book describing Costa Rican Butterflies.

I have ordered ALL of the available HiSET Materials and ended up only keeping this prep book to use in my class. The rest were too general and not helpful for students with limited schooling. Very detailed and has everything you might need to know to pass the exam.

Bought this for my nephew, so I haven't personally used it. He likes the format. I myself wish it had more instruction included, rahter than just explanations of the practice test answers.

Nicely organized fits in your hand. Inmate friendly if you're using it to tutor in a jail or prison.

Far too tangential. No need to create such elaborate descriptions of human suffering. Just go to any poor area and you'll find plenty of tragedy and trauma. Painful to read as the author presents it. And I tried, I really did. I felt strongly this was a book written to try to impress. I'm not impressed.

The author writes in a lucid manner.You won't feel like you're slogging through it.

What a great book! Dias deftly weaves philosophy, history, biology, cutting edge research, personal insight to explore human behavior. Why do some people do good things, why do some do heinous things. I got this book because my hobby is human behavior/ethology. I'd been putting off reading it because, well, it's a big book and the thought of diving into 848 pages non-fiction during a busy time of my life seemed daunting.I could not put it down. Seriously, the way he's structured the book, the way he weaves the various threads together -- this is actually a page turner. This would be a great gift for anyone interested in the human mind/human behavior, why we do the good and bad things we do.

I cannot say enough how excellent this book is. I ordered two more copies to give away. It's a must read.

Devastating, yet uplifting.It's funny how fate conspires. Being the eccentric individual I am, I don't tend to pick up short/shallow books for flying and it was a little funny to see my colleagues faces when I came back from the airport shop with this tome under my arm. I too however was surprised by the emotional and intense impact of Ten Types.Just before any jumps to conclusions it may be useful to point out that this piece is not have ten "types" of people in the sense of personality styles or whatever, the examination is of ten ASPECTS to human nature. Aspects which Dias explores through a combination of biographical tales, science and history.The prompt for the tome was a sad tale - a case Dias had been involved in where a boy in juvenile detention died during a three person restraint (that's 3 people restraining him btw). It wasn't just the death, it was the vast number of factors that lead to it, including the question of how does human nature allow of this sort of thing. (Perhaps ironically in the my only real criticism of the book, Dias only touches briefly on how the 10 types relate to the case I guess the piece is more about what Dias learned after the case rather than purely about it).Following the same theme the book is incredibly harrowing. Dias covers topics of child slavery, locked in syndrome and euthanasia, acid attacks, sex slavery, female genital mutation, child soldiers, and all the generally terrible conditions that surround and lead to such things.I wouldn't be exaggerating to say that the book gave me a couple of nightmares.Also it must be said its disturbing how much of the horrors of human behaviour is dealt to girls and women. Obviously there is no mandatory limit on suffering for either gender and the plight of male child slaves and soldiers is hardly ignorable, yet so much of the violence and suffering covered in this book was and continues to be inflicted about human females. We have a long way to go.Despite the horrors Dias does produce a hopeful book. The purpose of the tome is not to dishearten, even though it is intended to illustrate many traumas, the path is one of learning and understanding gained to change these things. So even though the book often raised goose-flesh or invaded my dreams I still am glad I read it.

My horizons have widened. In Saira's narrative her father tells her that 'books are more precious than diamonds'. I guess that can depends on the book - but this book which strikes such a deep resonance with the human heart and mind, deserves the comparison and is just as precious. In some sense it's prophetic. It's an invitation to view ourselves and our fellow human beings with entirely new eyes.After reading this you cannot be numb, you cannot switch off from the needs of others and the human compulsion we all share to do something, anything, however small, to create a more just world. It invites us to act, to support the work of INQUEST, ActionAid and UNICEF. It has inspired me to do something different and better - to ignore the echo chamber and to try and help others. I want everyone to read this book.Â

This is a unique and astounding book that describes a set of 10 emotional and psychological 'mechanisms' - types of human behavior. It does this by both telling remarkable, engaging human stories of real people, but also matching these with corresponding studies and research into those mechanisms. All this is done in a seamless and engaging way that shows both the best and worst of humanity.
