Ben Kane's Hannibal, Enemy of Rome tells the human side of the Second Punic War. It centers upon two families, one Carthaginian and the other Roman. The Carthaginian family consists of a widower with three sons. The youngest son, Hanno, disobeying his father, goes on a fishing boat with a friend, is caught in a storm, and blown out to sea. He and his friend, Suniaton, are captured by pirates and sold into slavery in Campania. Suniaton is purchased to be a gladiator, while Hanno is purchased by a property owner to be a farm hand. Unfortunately for Hanno, the vilicus, or overseer is a Sicilian who hates Carthaginians and goes out of his way to make Hanno's life unbearable. Fortunately, Hanno is befriended by Aurelia and Quintus, the son and daughter of the property owner, Fabricius. Eventually, Quintus helps Hanno escape, and the two end up fighting on opposite sides when Hannibal invades Italy. Hanno is able to join up with his father Malchus and his brothers Bostar and Sapho who have come over the Alps with Hannibal. Quintus joins his father Fabricius in a cavalry unit under the command of Publius Cornelius Scipio, the father of Scipio Africanus. Hannibal, Enemy of Rome is engaging and follows the actual events of the Second Punic War very closely. The action only goes up to the battle of Trebia, and I understand that there will be sequels. I look forward to reading Ben Kane's future books on the Second Punic War.
Ben Kane's Hannibal: Enemy of Rome describes three journeys. The trek of the famous Carthaginian general who leads his troops over the Alps to challenge Rome provides the genesis for the novel, but it is the coming of age stories of two teenage boys who are destined to face each other across the battlefield that drives the action. Kane deftly draws the character of the Carthaginian, Hanno, whose fate is irrevocably changed after a harmless act of rebellion results in him being cast adrift at sea as well as in life. Enslaved, he comes to be owned by the father of the Roman boy, Quintus. Again, Kane describes a youth who rises to the challenges set him but at the same time shows his vulnerability. Both youths are rounded characters who display fear and come to understand the true meaning of loyalty: both to each other and to their countries. The book spares no punches when it comes to depicting the brutality of war and the callous attitudes of the times. As such, I wouldn't recommend it to those who are squeamish. However, I was impressed with the portrayal of the hardships faced by Hannibal's army during the perilous advance over the Alps; and Kane's recreation of the strategies, artillery and progress of the battle at Trebia is masterful. At the end of the book, Hanno and Quintus have both become men, tested and blooded. And with their debts to each other repaid, Kane creates the perfect set up for a final confrontation in the sequel, Hannibal: Fields of Blood. I look forward to reading it when it is released later this year.

Meanwhile the formidable Hannibal is moving against Saguntum, an allied city of Rome, with a massive army and officer roles for Malchus, Bostar and Sapho. Saguntum resists the siege to the bitter end while Hanno, sold to Quintus family, struggles to survive mistreatment by Agesandros, an slave overseer embittered against carthaginians. Quintus and Aurelia rescue Hanno. Quintus and Hanno strike an unlikely friendship while Aurelia feels an impossible attraction for the young carthaginian.Friendship between sworn rivals, blood debts, impossible love, sense of duty facing certain death, rivalry between brothers, all against the gigantic backdrop of Hannibal's army crossing the Alps and showing in the battle of the Trebia that the threat to Rome was very real. As all of Kane's books the research is meticulous and the reconstruction excellent. Looking forward to the continuation of this epic series!
I've read most of Kane's books and I enjoyed them all. This one was somewhat slow but picked up and overall thought he did a decent job of creating characters from both perspectives. I have purchased the next book in this installment and look forward to reading it.
Needed a weekend book and this turned into a reading delight, just got the fields of blood book and the clouds of war is on the way, you just have to know what happens to Hanno and Quintus, I've read the historical events before, just reading them in a novel makes the facts a lot more entertaining. I probably will explore more of Ben Kane's books.
Although the topic of the book is very interesting, Ben Kane does not develop the characters in a way that makes you care about their fate. The Roman characters, especially, do not display any type of warrior ethos that you expect from historical fiction set during a major war. The author describes the depth of the main characters' feelings in much greater detail than the fighting. When you pick up a book with a Carthaginian soldier on the cover and war elephants in the background, you do not expect most of the battles and skirmishes to be skipped.
