I'm impressed by this book. I've read some Chinese history books before and found it fairly impossible to remember significant names and events and dynasties. Nearly 5000 years of history--how to process even a small part of all that?So I was very happy with this book which you can read in 2 - 3 hours (the longer time if you stop to look things up along the way). I finished it in one sitting and wasn't at all bored by it. I bought another copy to give to a friend who is interested in China (mainly through kung fu movies and literature like "Romance of Three Kingdoms"). He liked it, too (the next volume will begin with the "Three Kingdoms" history. I think one or more of Jet Li's movies involve that period so if you know someone interested in movies from China, about that time period, s/he may like this book, too).This is not the typical "comic book" style of drawing. It's not 6-10 small panels per page and with characters saying silly/funny things to liven it all up. But, since I find that style of writing very difficult to actually concentrate on and sift through (and, personally, don't want to waste time with the "funny" asides which most of the time aren't really that funny), this was perfect. The text--concise and to the point--is the main thing, but the illustrations (either a full page or 2 to a page) help you picture and remember what you're reading. The artwork, like the text, isn't very ornate, but I found it pleasing to look at and felt it went well with the material. In my opinion, this book was a lot of work for just one person. I'm impressed by both the writing and the art and find it an ambitious--and successful--presentation.Who is this for? That's a difficult question. The vocabulary, sentence length and level of detail is probably about a middle school reading level. However, it would probably be an unusual middle school student with the interest level in China to read through this. For "interest level needed", I would think it would more likely be "high school to adult". For me, this was actually rather nice. As an adult with a long-time interest in China (but very little knowledge about this time period--the "Foundations" of Chinese civilization), it was enjoyable that the reading level itself was so easy, allowing me to concentrate on the information itself.I think this is best as a very good overview and introduction to this period (2700 BCE to 220 CE,roughly) and would make it easy to then go on to read in more detail, concentrating on the things that particularly interested you (there's a lot. For me, it was the Qin dynasty and the development of government and cultural including the early Chinese philosophy. Hard to believe it only lasted 30 years or so. Now I can picture that in a way I couldn't just a few hours ago. Similarly, I was interested in the Han period and the major advances China made in so many areas during that time (400 years). These, and many other facts about early China are now at my fingertips thanks solely to this book.I liked the way Jing Liu included stories here and there (the one about the man who invented paper was pretty horrific)--not a lot, but a few to suggest biographical information that would be interesting to look up (including some very powerful women--not always forces for good), and the role of the military and Chinese-style feudalism, the geography that I now know a bit more about as well. I had forgotten what a role eunuchs played in some of the ancient courts--a bit of that is mentioned here as well.What was good about the text was how the author/illustrator extracted the key points/highlights and brought them to the reader's attention--not to be comprehensive, but to whet your interest and give a bit of foundation and introductory overview. If you don't look further, you'll still come away having learned quite a bit. If you want to know more, this is a nice, fun introduction.I also liked the way the graphics were used to visualize information. A timeline, of course, but other things too, like the way populations suffered attrition from each dynasty because of war, or a little illustration for the different philosophies--Confucianism, Legalism and Taoism--just a touch, but if you don't know anything about them, you'll get a taste and can go further if you want.All in all, I think this is very well done..

Seemed a bit dry to me, but my comic-obsessed 9-year-old absolutely inhaled this series. As someone who has no background, it seemed like a very thorough introductory book; I particularly liked the side topics into non-government/non-war subjects on things like important philosophical movements and arts. But as I had been familiar with Larry Gonick's history series (to say nothing of the Crash Course series), I had been expecting at least a little humor, of which there is little.On the other hand though, there was a lot of contextualization of numbers and data, which was super helpful and interesting.So, as a comic I think it fails, but as an introductory history, it succeeds. And it def. reached it's target audience, a history-obsessed 9-year-old. He made sure I pre-ordered the next in the series.. like, a couple of times.

I confess, I'm no expert in Chinese history. Not even remotely. I'm not even that into comics, and this is clearly a product of the world-wide manga era. However, what I am a fan of is Larry Gonick's work; I even used his Cartoon History of the Universe as a reference for a paper in college. Therefore, I fully approve of what Jing Liu's doing here, and Liu certainly does the tradition justice.What do you need to know about the origins of? There's a decent treatment of Chinese philosophy -- Confucianism, Taoism, The Art of War, and a number of others. The origins of the Han Chinese as a culture are of course given the bulk of the attention here, describing how they coalesced from independent groups into one of the world's early super powers. (And there's quite a lot of family drama among rulers -- some of it makes Egyptian history look calm and orderly.) Even food figures into it, fittingly as the Chinese are justifiably proud of their cuisines and their international reach.This looks to be an excellent series overall and China in general is a subject we in the west should understand much more completely. Grab this one and get started.

I purchased this book for reading at work when it gets slow. It rarely gets slow enough at work for a more comprehensive history text to be practical to use, but this is broken down in to easy to digest chunks.It is great for an adult to use as casual/light reading, but I would imagine it even better a tool for someone in their early teens to understand Chinese history. The illustrations are cute and fun, the text and information is not too dense or inaccessible and it is easy to just pick up and put down as needed.

An excellent intro to the basics of ancient Chinese history. For anyone who wants a basic outline for themselves with visuals this makes a great first read and is excellent for introducing kids to what can be a dense subject. For graphics though expect more along the lines of individual characters saying things rather than a more traditional paneled comic. This is more like heavily illustrated history book for kids than it is a true comic but it achieves it's goal of making what could be a dry subject to children much more palatable.

i almost never give anything 5 stars. i save that for books that i think everyone should read.this one is both interesting and exciting. the two authors spent time in africa and other parts of the world investigating disease outbreaks and treating patients. they investigated outbreaks of very dangerous diseases, including ebola in environments with terrible transportation and no or little medical facilities.

This book literarily put you the ground in the trenches of what is like to work with some of the most deadly viruses known to man. I mean these people love what they do and are ready to loss their life to follow a passion of research. The whole time i read this book i had more respect for these researchers who work with Lab 4 viruses. I felt like i was on a deadly episode of survivor. Good review of other hemorrhagic virus related to Ebola and what it takes to follow, investigate, and research these virus. All from the comfort and "safety" of you own home.

A very well written book... it reads as if fiction but is full of non-fiction facts/processes on how to discover the causes of possible epidemics.

I bought this book second hand as I've enjoyed several similar books in the past only to discover that this book was now out of print.It is very interesting to read biographies by those involved in the discovery of the modern plagues, where I would venture to say that Ebola is now fairly well known, although this may not have been the case a few years back. I enjoyed reading the first hand accounts of those that have been there and done that, so to say, trying to track down the pathogen behind the outbreaks you only read about in the newspapers.

If you are a germ a-gone don’t read this book but if you want to be informed then read it.

Another book about the CDC which will absolutely send shivers up your spine! Scarier than fiction because fiction, it ain't! The next time somebody sneezes on an airplane you're on you just might freek out!

The instructional diagrams are well illustrated, and there are several projects at the back of the book to use the new-learned folds. I like this book because it has a good variety of floral designs that are simplistic but can be elegant with the right paper.

Origami Flowers is an English translation of Hana No Origami. It features a lovely collection of blossoms. Some of them are abstract and stylized and some are very realistic. Like a lot of Japanese books- there are scissors used in some of the models. Mostly they are to create decorative edges that further define a type of flower.The diagrams are traditional style, but this is a good book for beginners. It features a full guide to reading traditional diagrams and each of the models is marked for difficulty level.Beginners will get comfortable fast, folding the simpler models, and building up to the trickier models. A lot of the models use several sheets of paper. The gorgeous rose in the center of the book cover reminds me quite a bit of stained glass roses. It's sculptural and it's one of the simplest models in the book, it gets it's many petaled look by using several sheets of paper. This could become one of my all time favorite models pretty easily.Card makers will enjoy the elegance of several of the flat flowers, and jewelry paper crafters will also see a good use for a lot of these pretty flowers.More practical models include a couple decorated envelopes, and there is a whole section dedicated to "Practical Flowers". I'm wild for practical origami, in fact one of my favorite origami books ever is Practical Origami , so this is one of my favorite sections of the book. Pretty bowls that look like sculptured flowers that are made using paper napkins, decorated chopstick cases and dishes. These are very pretty models that would work very well for entertaining.[I received a complimentary copy of the book to review on my craft blog- Don't Eat the Paste. It arrived in perfect condition~! which, I'm glad for...bent corners actually drive me nuts.and of course, I love Voltron! the comics are great for anyone who binged the season in one night and are still wanting some more of their fave paladins.also since it's like bonus content? the story lines are a little more chill. it's a relaxing read. nothing that is actually important to the main story line. I like it.

Defender Vol. 2: Pilgrimage by Tim Hedrick, Mitch Iverson, and artists Jung Gwan & Rubine is another great installment of this series. It was such a fun read and I didn't want it to end!

Legendary book to read along with a legendary re re make of a legendary character/franchise. I just hope they do not stop at a cliffhanger for all time.

A great tale with more original species and adventures that I have come to love.

A free copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.The Voltron paladins respond to a distress call and find the Davdabhau, a group of alien settlers being attacked by the Galra on a mining planet. They are a warrior race in search of their ancestral hunting grounds and had been tricked into coming to that planet. The paladins agree to accompany them on the dangerous journey to their hunting grounds, fighting a number of dangerous opponents along the way.I had loved the original Voltron cartoon as a child (lions, not cars!) and the passage of time has really blurred out a lot of my memories of the show. I don't have Netflix, so I haven't seen more than occasional pictures of the new show. Getting a chance to read the comic version was a great introduction and way to see how the characters interact in the new show. The authors write for the Netflix show, so this is definitely in keeping with the new version of the characters. I don't know if this plot line was actually on the show, but it's very straightforward and contained within this volume, so you don't actually need to know too much about the background in order to understand the story.The art splashes are pretty and very well done, with color coding speech bubbles when all of the lions join to form Voltron. It's a neat trick to visually let you know who is speaking and to keep track of the story as it goes along. Some of the situations are likely very new because I really don't remember characters vying to marry Hunk in the children's cartoon, but it does lead to some comic relief and character bonding moments. This was a fun story overall, and one that I enjoyed with my daughter, who had never seen Voltron before.

This story nicely hits a sweet spot of its target audience - grade school kids looking for a bit of mindless adventure and some humor. While definitely not on the same level as e.g., Avatar, it's a fun little romp in space and original storyline not in the series that never takes itself too seriously.Story: When the castle answers a distress call, they find a race of cat-like humanoids fighting desperately against Galran mobs. As the Voltron crew soon discover, the people were betrayed and brought to the Galra by a traitor. They need to find their legendary protection grounds - a treacherous journey that the Voltron lions and castle can help with finding. But the traitor also knows where they are heading....The theme of this book is Hulk - nearly every scene and every moment is about him and his unique talents. From being able to sniff out a special cake in a maze to recognizing that a new alien may not be an adversary and that there are better ways to deal with conflict than with more conflict. A running gag is that the cat people has two sisters who want to marry Hulk because they respect size and strength most in their culture.The first part of the book is the battle to free the cat people and the rest is the journey and dangers to find their sacred grounds. The story is fairly straightforward and younger readers will have no problems following the plot.The illustrations look exactly like the animation. Some of the action sequences may be a bit confusing but otherwise, this is the Voltron that everyone knows and loves. I think younger kids will especially appreciate the action, adventure, and admittedly simplistic storyline. But fans can also appreciate the humor interspersed throughout. 'Voltron Legendary Defender Vol. 2: Pilgrimage' by Tim Hedrick and Mitch Iverson with art by Jung Gwan Yoo and Rubine is about robot fighters that can form an even bigger robot fighter. I'll confess right here that I've never been a big fan of the show, but I enjoyed this well enough.The Voltron team, in their quest to stop Zarkon, find a race of hunters and shaman called the Davdabhau. They protect them from an attack. Then they are charged with escorting them through space to find new hunting grounds. Of course, it can never be that simple, so the crew finds a giant space monster that they have to deal with along with other hazards or space travel. One of the characters, Hunk, has two of the Davdabhau females fighting over him, much to his dismay.The story is a pretty good space opera type story, and the art is so reminiscent of the cartoon that it almost feels like it's lifted from the cels and relabeled with new dialogue (which is not the case as far as I can tell). Folks who are fans of Voltron will probably find a lot to like in this story.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Lion Forge, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
