This is a very complete and succinct overview of the potential role that the agricultural sector can play in reducing poverty. The author has an uncanny ability to cover in a paragraph what other economists would take an entire chapter or even a book to cover. Too many countries neglect the potential of the rural and agricultural sector in enhancing the overall welfare of their societies. One result is the massive rural to urban migrations that result in the Karachi, Dhaka, and Manila's of the World - unmanageable urban masses. The author is a firm believer in the importance of public sector extension agents - something that unfortunately has become anathema to the World Bank and USAID who believe that everyone should pay for whatever services they receive. They have successfully led a drive over the past 20 years to starve, eliminate, or privatize public extension services around the World. These extension agents may be underpaid and under supported but they usually live in the villages they work in, want to do good, and should be seen as an asset to take advantage of rather than eliminate.

Purchased this after listening to an interview with director Werner Herzog, who stated that this is the only book that he *requires* all of his film students to take. He writes:"I’m Werner Herzog, I’m a filmmaker normally but I do read. The book I would really recommend is an obscure book published in 1967: “The Peregrine,” by J.A. Baker, who is somebody about whom we know nothing, literally nothing. He wrote in Great Britain when the last peregrines were dying out—now they have bounced back a little bit. He observes peregrines and it’s a most incredible book. It has prose of the caliber that we have not seen since Joseph Conrad. And an ecstasy—a delirious sort of love for what he observes.The intensity and the ecstasy of observation is something that you have to have as a filmmaker or somebody who loves literature. Whoever really loves literature, whoever really loves movies, should read that book.In a way, it’s almost like a transubstantiation, like in religion, where the observer becomes almost the object—in this case the falcon—he observes. He writes, for example, about the falcon soaring high up, and then higher and higher until the falcon is only a dot. Then he writes, “and then we swoop down,” as if he had become a falcon himself. And there’s a variety of moments where you can tell that he has completely entered into the existence of a falcon. And this is what I do when I make a film, I step outside of myself into an ekstasis in Greek, to step outside of your own body, a point outside. Baker steps into the fog and in an ecstasy of observing the world it is unprecedented."

No other way to put it: This book is a treasure of the English language.In The Peregrine J.A. Baker describes how he tracked and trekked over months and miles in his native England to watch and record in language like you've never read how peregrines hunt and feed and fly and play and rest. The language he uses to construct his sentences is like none other I have ever read. It's a vivid mix of nature writing and the best poetry. The text is so dense, the sentences are so packed with words bringing life to action--there really is no reading experience I can compare this to. I could only stand to read a few pages at a time; "relish" not "read" would be the better word there.This is more than "nature writing," too. Baker gets under the very surface of life to expose what lurks. Just a few excepts to illustrate:"The hardest thing of all to see is what is really there.""Terror seeks out the odd, and the sick, and the lost."“There is no mysterious essence we can call a 'place'. Place is change. It is motion killed by the mind, and preserved in the amber of memory.”“Whatever is destroyed, the act of destruction does not vary much. Beauty is vapour from the pit of death.”I cannot give The Peregrine anything less than 5 stars. It's more than a book, it is a reading experience. Reading it will expand your senses. It will enliven you and enrich you as a human being. I think that's the greatest thing we can expect from any book.

J. A. Baker's "The Peregrine" is a remarkable achievement in nature writing for both its style and substance, easily among the finest ever in the category. The book, in diary form, details the author's extensive viewing and tracking of peregrine falcons, but more accurately, his obsessive stalking of these birds of breathtaking speed and predatory skill, in the Essex countryside outside London during the fall of 1962 through the spring of 1963.Baker's singular style is the very model of concision. It is stark and stunning prose, often more like preternatural poetry, exceptional in its beauty. He is not simply reporting the activities of the peregrines, their prey, and their surroundings, he is fully within the action and its environs, and so, therefore, is the reader. It is an unmatched reading experience. Baker displays an uncanny ability to describe color, movement, landscape, and weather with brilliant clarity and nuance.Though less than 200 pages, this is not a quick or easy read. Best digested in small bites, I found it too intense for long sessions. Also, there are many passages, individual sentences, and striking word combinations which must be reread a time or two and lingered over in order to fully appreciate.There is a somewhat lurid focus on the peregrines' kills, unflinchingly described with a certain admiration. Indeed, as the seasons progress, the author increasingly identifies with the peregrine, simultaneously grousing a growing disdain for the human species: a thoroughly fascinating narrative posture. This is essential reading; an altogether unforgettable book.

This book is not for everyone, and it does take as much patience as the writer himself who trudged the fields in search of the peregrine in rain and sun and cold, but you will be rewarded with a vision that is cinematic, profound, and transcending.

Everywhere I turned had the same general advice: build up a stash of frozen milk before returning to work, then pump while you're there to make up the missed feedings. However, there were never any specifics beyond ~100-200 ounces of stored milk (which is a huge range, by the way!). This book tells you how to make it happen, and how to keep it working.I wish I had gotten this and read it earlier than the week before I returned to work. My first day back was chaotic and stressful, but it would have been even worse if I hadn't read this first. It gave me the confidence to pump wherever and be prepared for it. It also made the very real confession that most working moms end up using at least some formula, which is relaxing some of my self-imposed pressure to match every ounce she drinks while also trying to build a freezer stash.One thing I still haven't seen addressed anywhere is what to do if you and your baby are fighting a thrush yeast infection. We have been trying to kill the stubborn little buggers from the very beginning and I was told not to freeze any milk for future use, since it would just re-introduce the yeast infection. Well, I'm back at work now, so there is no way to keep feeding breast milk unless I build up at least a little stash. The author's suggestion of feeding a few ounces of formula so you can freeze a meal's milk was helpful for this.Another possibility for a future chapter addition would be what to do if you can't pump as often at work as you would normally breastfeed. I get 3 30-minute sessions at my office's Mother's Room to harvest for 5 missed feedings. I don't always hit my quota in that limited time, and have to add a pumping session at night after she goes to bed, or pump extra on the weekend. Some ideas for how to manage this without creating an oversupply problem would be nice.

This book helped me a lot to plan my return to work after my 3 month maternity leave. I recommend it to any mom planning to keep breastfeeding her baby while going back to work, it provides not only relevant tools and tips but also it has a strong supportive tone of voice that help you to fight against internal and external pressures.I'm still on maternity leave but I'll update this post as soon as I'm back applying everything I've learned from it!

Very easy to read, does not feel like "research", feels more like hearing advice from a friend. I have not finished it yet, but if you also need breastfeeding/ pumping instruction you should purchase a 2nd book specifically for that. This book is written based on the assumption you have all your basic breastfeeding and pump-use questions already answered. Mainly focuses on planning for and implementing a pumping routine at work.

Loved this book. Author has a great sense of humor. It's an easy read, full of practical tips about what to expect and how to approach and interact with people at work regarding your pumping needs. Has some very good resource recommendations and tips as well. I particularly enjoyed the author's inclusion of personal recommendations and lists. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for the working, breastfeeding mom.

As a first time mom planning to go back to work this book was not only informative but it was funny, easy to read and will remain a wonderful resources as I move out of pregnancy and into nursing, pumping and working. Practical and applicable tips and information for how to navigate this phase of life as well as encouraging stories and examples from professional women, in all industries, who have been there and done that. I highly recommend this book for any mom planning to return to the workplace or any mom planning to pump at all.

Great! Especially for TCOM students!

Good book for reviewing histology important concepts. Not that good if you are looking for more specific details.

I haven't finished reading this book, yet. And I haven't taken the step 1 exam, either. However, I really like this book. So I will write a brief review now. Be the first that I can be. ;)The best part about the road map books is that it has clinical correlations. And I am surprised that there can be so many clinical correlations from the beginning of the first charpter. It is like a short review for pathology at the same time. And because of that, it made reading much more interesting than just reading basic concepts which can get boring quickly. I also like the format and wording. I just finished reading the high yield immunology, that one was so hard to read because those two authors tend to write long sentences without any coommas. This author's wording is short and easy to understand.One thing that this book needs to improve is to get more pictures. After all, it is a histology book.

I used this book as an MS1 and it got me through class- now I am going back and using it for a quick read in my Board review. Although I haven't taken the Boards yet, I believe this is the book to have for this subject. I also own the High Yield Histo but it lacks detail and BRS is way too thick to go through it for reviewing a low yield subject like Histo.If you do have the time BRS would be better but if you are like me and running out time fast- then stick to Road MapsThe above was my review prior to the Boards. Now looking back i stand by it. Histo is not a very high yield subject. So just pop this book open for two full days of studying for the Board and move on to a more significat subject such as path (which is at least 60-70% of the exam)

I used this book to review for the SHELF, and I found it very useful. I am even planning on using it as one of the resources to study for the USMLE 1. I highly recommend this book, they are short, easy to read and they have good practice questions after each chapter to test your knowledge on the subject.

The richness of the text is made less accessible not only by this oversight but also by less than intuitive titles such as “A damned sewerful of men: Renaissance Rediscoveries” (Chapter 4).

This is an engaging, wide-ranging, sometimes repetitive collection of thoughts, observations, and personal opinions regarding books, book making, libraries, book collecting, printing, paper manufacture, fictional libraries, shelving, and, especially, private libraries through the ages. If you might give some thought to dropping by on a Friday night at McCosh 10 to catch a lecture by that old slightly muddled but interesting professor from the English Department, then this could be the book for you.We start with the Great Library at Alexandria, and I more or less expected a chronological walk through the history of libraries, ending up with the usual discussion of what libraries mean now in this digital age. That is not what you get. Rather, you get a bit more than that and a bit less. Like a Dr. Who of libraries we travel around in time and place; so you might walk out of the Bodleian and into the Folger, only to then turn around and find yourself in the Vatican on your way to Pushkin's private apartment library.While the organization of the book is chaotic, and the author's sense of what's worthy of note is unique, (the Vatican's erotica collection, first web porn videoed in a library, odd things found in returned library books, number of people killed by falling over shelves), there are a few topics that we meet repeatedly. These include - descriptions of private libraries and sketches of private collectors, short histories of numerous monastic libraries, stories about famous books and manuscripts, fictional libraries, private libraries of writers, bookmaking and adornment tools and materials, and attitudes toward books over time.I enjoyed this book because it was so personal and unpredictable, but also because it is remarkably free of that creepy, maudlin, syrupy romanticism and fetishism that so often infects books about books. We are forgetting how important our free libraries are and have been. They have their own stories to tell. They have shaped our intelligence and housed our imagination.

Well-written and fascinating read. A potted history of books in all their forms, and wonderful detail about the evolution of libraries and the people who amassed libraries of books. Couldn't put it down.

My own love affair with libraries started well over half a century ago. The libraries of my youth were places of magic, of possibilities to be explored. They were also places of refuge. But what are libraries, and how have they evolved over the centuries? In this book, Stuart Kells writes about libraries (both fictitious and real) and their influence on individuals, on literature and on culture more generally.‘If a library can be something as simple as an organised collection of texts, then libraries massively pre-date books in the history of culture. Every country has a tradition of legends, parables, riddles, myths and chants that existed long before they were written down.’I remember the folk tales of my childhood. Many of them appeared in print, but some of them were part of the storytelling that is part of my Gaelic-speaking ancestry. I remember, too, reading ‘The Name of the Rose’ by Umberto Eco, and wondering exactly which books were in it. Or in Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s Cemetery of Forgotten Books.This book is full of interesting anecdotes. One of my favourites was this :‘Sir Robert Cotton was at his tailor’s shop when he saw by chance an ancient document that the tailor was about to cut up and use as a tape measure. On examination, the sheepskin parchment turned out to be an original Magna Carta—one of as few as four that King John had signed in 1215—still with ‘all its appendages of seals and signatures’ attached.’I was marginally disappointed to read, a few pages later that:‘Some of these stories of book discovery are surely apocryphal. There is considerable doubt, for example, as to whether Cotton really did find an original Magna Carta at his tailor’s shop.’But the point isn’t really whether an original Magna Carta was treated in this way, the point is that it’s possible. Sometimes the margins between fact and fiction can be blurred in a most satisfying way.Aside from the anecdotes, there’s information about the many libraries Stuart Kells has visited. There’s information about the history of recording information and its storage, including the use of tablets, papyrus and animal skins. And, eventually, mass scale printing.Like many other readers, I read both print and electronic material. I prefer print, but electronic material is often easier to access and requires less physical storage. But does the digital age pose a threat to traditional physical books, or is it simply an additional delivery mode? In the library I now use, there’s a mixture of physical and digital material. And the library has plenty of patrons.I liked this quote:‘Reading a book on screen or in microfilm was an unsatisfactory experience, like kissing a girl through a windowpane.’While I don’t know about kissing through a windowpane, I do know that books that I love are books that I want to hold. That, for me and for many others, reading is a tactile experience as well as a visual one. There’s something about the smell of books (old or new), something about the heft of a physical volume that digital copies just don’t have.I loved this book.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

I love Streetwise maps. The lamination is great when one is out in rainy weather. The best part is that they actually include all the streets which hotel maps do not. Having these maps has allowed us to find restaurants in neighborhoods which we would not have ever found with a less detailed map. They pack easily and fit into a jacket pocket.
