Very timely and interesting read. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested (or appauled) by Americans' obsession with guns and gun politics (for and against). It's well-written with clear prose, and it leans much more heavily towards the readings of the 2nd Ammedment, which means more of a focus on the last century. As other reviewers have noted, the book reads as if the author has an implicit bias in favor of greater gun control. That said, I have yet to find a book that does not not have an apparent bias one way or other. As such, I recommend that anyone interested the subject read several books with varying opinions.

I learned a lot of specific history about the creation of America's constitution. The fears, the compromises, the visionary reach of its creators all led to an imperfect but wonderful compromise. The sometimes tortured history since is covered through the very specific lens of the author, who allows his bias in favour of sensible gun control, and a judiciary that knows it's place, to run freely throughout. That colors, but doesn't distort the facts presented. This is a worthwhile read for anyone curious to know what the second amendment actually says (it's one whole sentence!), and to understand how the society that founded it, and evolved around it has interpreted its meaning for over 2 centuries of changing times.I recommend it.

The book is an excellent history of the writing of the 27 word amendment and subsequent coverage of the Heller Supreme Court Case that reversed 200 years of gun control legislation. A very good reference source to have.

Waldman presented an excellent critique of the "originalism" as applied to the decide Heller. The history of the Second Amendment and the gun movement he put together helped me go beyond sound bites. I will likely reread this book in the future.

whether you're Republican, Democrat, Independent, or other, you need to read this book. A great historical summary of the 2nd Amendment from the framers through current day. Think you know all about the 2nd Amendment's drafting, how it's been interpreted and used by the left and the right, and how the legal interpretation has change, or not? You'll be greatly enlightened by this historical account. An unbiased look at how the Amendment came to be, and how lawyers, judges, the Supreme Court, and various groups have interpreted it, and change interpretations, over the decades since adoption.

When I look at reviews of books like this, I get depressed. Many people evaluate it in terms of preconceived political values. The author clearly has a perspective, but he is pretty much on target about the uncertainty of the meaning of the Second Amendment. For those of you unfamiliar with this part of the Constitution, one of the Bill of Rights, here is what it says: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." So, what does that mean? Aye, there's the rub.If you look at the debates of the time that this amendment was being developed and the politics of its approval, there is uncertainty. Some major figures expressly associated it with a militia--assuming, to some, that such bodies would meet regularly and practice their art. Others thought that it included hunting. And so on. The point: This amendment was born in circumstances where there were questions. The statement on militia cannot easily be avoided--but the actors debating the meaning were not of one mind. So, the amendment was founded in something of a fog. You don't have to take the author's word--read the discussion at the time. I have looked at some of that documentation (years ago and without reference to this book) and can say that only a fool would say that the meaning of this amendment is clear. The book spends most of its time looking at the conflict over the meaning of the amendment and the process by which this passage in the Constitution went from little discussion to the Supreme Court rejecting an individual right to forearms (including non-liberal Chief Justice Warren Burger suggesting that an individual right to firearms was ludicrous). And that is the key for this volume, the evolving understanding of the Second Amendment. Regardless of the author's perspective, he does a fine job in outlining that evolution (albeit he has a critical take on that). In the end--whatever one's views on the subject--the book provides an analysis of the evolution of a Constitutional doctrine that was murky at its inception.

Didn't seem too polemic one way or the other. Does highlight how little the Founding Fathers left regarding what they were thinking regarding the right to bear arms. Points out how conveniently the NRA leaves out the clause about "well regulated militia" and how NRA was largely responsible for the INDIVIDUAL right to bear arms.

This is a great work for anyone trying to understand the background that led to the drafting of the Second Amendment. Those who are curious about constitutional law will also benefit by reading this book.

About me: I'm a grad student in math, but have no prior experienceof the topic of the book. I have actually not yet read the 40last pages or so, so the review is about the rest of the book.I will be quite negative below, so I want to start by sayingthat most chapters are OK, and I love short books. And thisbook gives you a quick way of getting aquainted with various modelsof computation. I dont agree with the official reviewer thatit goes in to depth or is extremely clear and well written. On the contrary, it does NOT go into depth in all chapters, butis rather uneven. I really liked the chapter about lambda-calculus.My general impression is that the author is often saying"how to think" about the definitions and concepts, and what theyintuitively are, rather than precisely saying what the definition IS.I believe that the cause of my confusion, other than perhaps ignorance,is the lack of crucial pieces of information. (See examples below). Many times I found myself confused after reading a definition, andreally needed an example to clarify what was going on. Althoughthere are fairly many examples in the book, there were several placesin desperate need thereof. It is mostly chapters 5 and 7 that I find confusing.Example (chapter 5, on logic programs) Definitive clauses - Program clauses and Goals - are defined. A definitive clause is P1 or (not P2 or not P3 .... or not Pn), i.e. a disjunction of so called "literals", and atmost one literal is positive. A definitive clause is a Goal if we remove P1, i.e. we have only negative literals. The problem is that there is only a definition of what a Goal is but not what meeting a Goal is... Only a very vague and incomplete explaination is given: "Program clauses can be seen as defining a database: [...] Goals are questions to be answered using the information about the problem in the database. This can be better seen with some examples." Then there is only ONE example in which the goal has only ONE negative literal. That leaves the reader wondering if each literal P2, ...., Pn should be true or just "atleast one of them". Since the notation for a goal is :- P2,P3,...,Pn you might believe that the goal is to deduce ALL of the Pi's, but since its a disjunction of negative literals, mathematically it only makes sense if the goal clause should be disproven, which means that ONE of the Pi's hold. It gets even more confusing later on. Although I might have my self to blame for some of the confusion, I am pretty convinced this is far from optimally written.Other complaints:There are some flaws in the technique of writing. For example the author mentionsmultisets several times, but gives the definition only the last time. On anotherinstance a new symbol is used and defined afterwards. There is also a logical flaw on page 61. There is an argument that "bounded minimisation"of a primitive recursive predicate is also primitive recursive. The argument uses a lemma whose input are functions f_1, ..., f_k that are primitive recursivetotal functions. Then the lemma is applied in a case where f_1 is a priori only partially defined.I'm sure its possible to fix this argument, but it still makes life unneccesarily difficult forthe reader.

We have a considerable collection of Hummel Figurines and Plates which we have gatheredfrom Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Bahamas, and South Florida. We ordered this Warman's M.J. Hummel Field Guide from Amazon since we needed a practicalsource of information and price guide for our Hummels and for a reference for purchases.Since our collection began in 1972 and ran thru to date, we needed a reference book todetermine the current value. This Field Guide is convenient to carry around while shoppingand evaluating possible purchases.

Many of the Hummels listed were given a very broad price range...Since TMK 1 through TMK 7 of the same humme is of a different value I would like to see each TMK mark valued individually....not lumped in one category (example) Hum 175 Mothers Darling TMK 1-7 $145.00 - $480.00 That does not tell me the value of a TMK 4 or a TMK 5 This book is too generalized...I would never buy this book again nor would I recommend it to my friends....

The product pricing is too general for the value of Hummels. They givethe same price on items whether they are 50 years old or justtwo or three. I would suggest the "Miller price guide toM.I. Hummel" figurines for accurate pricing.

Good little reference book

Very Good

This Guide has many pictures of figurines although photos of detailed areas are lacking. Finding individual figurines can be somewhat complicated. Needed information is here, but may take some searching to find it.

Good condition even though not the most helpful book for assessing values.

This small volume is a good update to the larger, but older, guide book I already have. I got it for the more updated values.

I just finished reading this and closed the book with a satisfying snap. As with all really good to great books, I finished it knowing more, in the case of this book much more, than when I started. This isn't really a book for the young, although some will get good from it. It's a book for those of us who are of a certain age, or, have parents of a certain age and are wrestling with what the means to them, and to us.It is also not a book for devout theists of any flavor. Ehrenreich's atheism is in full view throughout the book.Although not what I would call a consistently uplifting read, I would say that I finished the book with a sense of calm and a far better appreciation for dealing with end of life issues and thoughts that come from the existential nihilism many of feel as we get older in general. I also found it very well written and an easy read (I finished it over a couple of days). Although I wouldn't recommend it to everyone I know (in particular the born-again Christian types, or any other particularly religiously fanatic person), I would recommend it to a majority.Buy the physical version. Read it. Share it with those you love. You won't regret it.

What a treat it was to read this book! I’m not familiar with events at the cellular level in my body, or whatever else is going on in there, as long as it doesn’t hurt. But Ehrenreich makes this understandable, fascinating, funny, and serious at the same time. The book, however, isn’t all about cells. She takes us through a critical look at our health fads and dissects their supposed beneficial benefits. Turns out, you can eat all the kale and seaweed or whatever’s in style right now, but it won’t save you from your eventual death; we’re all going to die, right? Our deaths depend on many things we have no control over, such as cancer, a heart attack, or nuclear war. Ehrenreich also examines our burgeoning “preventive medicine” culture as a huge money-maker for doctors and hospitals, but not necessarily of much benefit to people.I’ve always wondered why death is practically taboo in our culture; it’s treated as something to whisper about and to avoid at all cost. I’ve known lots of people who are scared to death about dying. Why? If you’re religious, you get to live in Heaven for eternity (which doesn’t sound too good to me; wouldn’t it get boring?). Or if you’re not religious, you can imagine nothingness: no pain, heartache, regrets, money issues, etc. Are we so self-centered that we can’t imagine not being alive? The takeaway: enjoy your life while you can, don’t go crazy over food or exercise fads, and go gently into that good night when your time comes.

Wow, what a disappointment. Perhaps my expectations were too high? I acknowledge that I expected a lot from the writer of "Nickel and Dimed", the book that changed my tipping habits in particular and my view of the life of the low-level worker in general. And the subject matter of "Natural Causes" was perfectly in sync with my circumstances: dealing with advancing age and a cancer diagnosis. My situation has been fermenting since early 2017 and by now I've come to the conclusion that my generation, the boomers, are not going to put up with the medical / pharmaceutical / health insurance industry's standard operating procedures. Instead, we were going to take charge of our lives, our healthcare, and the manner of our death. After reading the NY Times review of this book, and hearing the author interviewed in a Slate podcast, I put in my order to Amazon immediately. I was confident I would enjoy reading somebody who was both an excellent writer and with a solid background in science, and whose views about healthcare in later years seemed to parallel my own. My hope was that along with enjoying the book, I'd be provided with arguments I could use in endlessly frustrating discussions with doctors and insurers. (Example of a frustrating discussion: I value quality of life over quantity, but my doctors take the opposite view and plan treatment accordingly. Whose opinion should prevail? Well, whose life is it, anyway?)With my expectations at such a high level, I was all the more unprepared for a laborious, poorly researched and prepared kvetch against the medical establishment that by its weakness made the issues at hand appear overly subjective and self-centered. Barbara Ehrenreich, what has happened to you?If wanting to be in charge of your medical treatment means you are self-centered, I stand guilty. I don't buy into the myth of the doctor as the all-knowing oracle for curing your ills, and that the patient should be a passive partner in the treatment planning process. But I wasn't ready for Ehrenreich's attempt early on in the book to demonize the medical profession, or reject doctors' advice out of hand. Her attitude harks back to man-hating excesses of early-generation feminism as Ehrenreich equates colonoscopies with sexual assault. Or, when she interprets the (always male, she asserts) gynecologist's white jacket as identifying the dominant player in a ritual where the woman receiving a pelvic exam is deliberately positioned in a receptive position. To me this is nonsense, the fantasy of someone who feels victimized by everything and who assigns absurd motivations to her supposed oppressor. In places, this author seems to have lost touch with reality. It doesn't get better. I have no time for new-age homeopathic practitioners, so was surprised to read this Ph D's accusation that after aligning medicine with science in the late 19th century, the profession "won its monopoly over the business of healing" by deriding homeopathy, chiropractic, and other forms of quackery as "pseudoscience." But they are!She dismisses preventive care as mostly a scam, and even though she exercises she condemns striving for fitness as just another example of our culture of narcissism. There are worthwhile arguments to be made against the excesses of medical testing and the false promises of the fitness industry, but Ehrenreich doesn't bother to make them. Instead she merely accuses, and even the logic of her accusations doesn't add up. Her sloppy writing and gratuitous arguments undermine legitimate criticism of these subjects and so do us all a disservice. In similar fashion, she writes off the mindfulness movement to the machinations of Silicon Valley. She accuses the software developers of drumming up the trend toward mindfulness in order to sell mindfulness-related software. How she makes this connection is beyond me. I've worked in tech since the '80s and am aware there are some mindfulness apps out there, but in this multi-billion dollar industry they fail to register on anybody's bottom line, except perhaps those of a few startups. My reading of her attack on Silicon Valley is that she doesn't like the tech industry and is using the mindfulness fad to accuse the industry of manipulation. When so many far more relevant examples are available -- Facebook's use of user data for example -- her mindfulness argument is just silly. Because it loosely ties in with the book's theme she can justify its inclusion. But her argument is at best naive and at worst disingenuous. Our death-denying culture and the industries that profit from it are worthwhile subjects for criticism, and Ehrenreich goes after them. Logically she argues that no matter how hard we exercise, how carefully we eat, how piously we avoid tobacco and alcohol, we nevertheless will end up dead. Healthy living advocates portray age and disease as personal failings that could be avoided if only we were less self-indulgent. Fair ball, but then she goes over the top and accuses "elites" in the upper middle class of depriving working-class people of their justified enjoyment of one of the few activities that reduce their stress level: smoking. Yes, she defends the tobacco industry and criticizes rising cigarette taxes that "hurt the poor and the working class hardest." Once again in this book Ehrenreich demeans valid criticism of the wellness industry by veering off the path of logic and common sense and defending the undefendable. Her screwy logic is used against advocates of immunotherapy, a new approach to cancer that is generating enthusiasm and research -- and in a few cases, amazing success. But no, she argues, utilizing the immune system in the fight against cancer won't work because one cell type in the immune system, the macrophage, can actually switch sides and defend malignant cells from attack. With that single example she rules out an avenue of research that has only recently become viable due to advances in technology and the mapping of the genome. (In another part of the book, she wonders if much of the massive machinery used in medical treatment these days is actually fake, constructed and installed to impress and make compliant the patient.)I don't know what's up with Barbara Ehrenreich, who is now 76. I'm a believer in Billy Wilder's maxim, "You're only as good as the best thing you've ever done." And I can attest that Ehrenreich has done some of the best investigative writing I've read. There's got to be a reason she fails so badly with this book. To get many of her zany accusations into print she must have fought tooth and nail with her publisher and her editor. I'm guessing that her previous successes and her status as a money-making author enabled her to prevail. This book is going to do Ehrenreich's reputation no good, and may even demean some of the good writing she has done in the past. Worse, her lazy and self-gratifying arguments trivialize a major issue facing an aging America: delivery of compassionate, patient-focused healthcare to a large population, the boomers, who have pretty much had things their way so far in life.We boomers are not going to allow our old age to be "medicalized" as Ehrenreich astutely puts it. If treatment is required, we want to know the alternatives and make the final call. This requires on our part a considerable amount of self-education about our affliction, but the internet provides us with legitimate sources of information that enable us to become "informed patients" who have earned the right to engage in a discussion with our doctors, as opposed to listening to a dissertation about what they're going to do to us next. We've earned the right to call a halt to endless rounds of debilitating therapy and go to palliative care. And when that is exhausted, it will be our choice to go to hospice care, preferably in-home, and with the option of assistance from our doctor at the end of life so we don't have to endure intractable pain and needless suffering for weeks or months before we expire.I'm hopeful that my generation will achieve a high quality of life through our senior years, that we'll control our illnesses rather than the other way around, and that we will learn to accept the inevitability of age and death early on, and have the authority to determine the time and manner of our death. The infrastructure is in place but attitudes of all the players need reality adjustments: We boomers must learn to age gracefully, our caregivers must learn to work with us rather than dictate to us, and the medical options as we near life's end -- palliative and hospice based -- need to be funded sufficiently to meet the requirements of our long-lived generation. All these must come to pass, and I am disappointed this acclaimed writer was unable to move the process forward.

I'm a long-time fan of Ehrenreich; but I was disappointed with this book. Unlike Nickeled and Dimed or Bright-Sided, this takes a very big subject, has a very large thesis about it--and fails to deliver. The author excels in finding and debunking frauds and social wrongs--the treatment of poor workers or people on the skids, in particular. But her effort to take on the entire medical establishment and alternative medicine, and even whole philosophical ideas about the nature of ourselves and the world is piecemeal, of course. It falls too quickly into diatribe, substitutes gibes for real reasoning, and fails to avoid logical fallacies. The thesis is a good one, a timely one--but the book does not succeed in its exposition.

My husband and I are about the same age as Ehrenreich. Everyone thinks that if you have excellent insurance you are home free- however that does not prevent doctors from using you as a cash cow or a sa guinea pig for their latest money making office test. She exposes the underbelly of a medical profession that is not as knowledgeable in science as one is led to believe and preys on our fear of death. I got news for you- it's going to happen.A total joy to read- not another 10 ways to live longer crappy book. Liberating.

Agricultural Development and Economic Transformation: Promoting Growth with Poverty Reduction (Palgrave Studies in Agricultural Economics and Food Policy)

From the Back Cover

This book examines the role of agriculture in the economic transformation of developing low- and middle-income countries and explores means for accelerating agricultural growth and poverty reduction. In this volume, Mellor measures by household class the employment impact of alternative agricultural growth rates and land tenure systems, and impact on cereal consumption and food security. The book provides detailed analysis of each element of agricultural modernization, emphasizing the central role of government in accelerated growth in private sector dominated agriculture. The book differs from the bulk of current conventional wisdom in its placement of the non-poor small commercial farmer at the center of growth, and explains how growth translates into poverty reduction. This new book is a follow up to Mellor’s classic, prize-winning text, The Economics of Agricultural Development.

This is a very complete and succinct overview of the potential role that the agricultural sector can play in reducing poverty. The author has an uncanny ability to cover in a paragraph what other economists would take an entire chapter or even a book to cover. Too many countries neglect the potential of the rural and agricultural sector in enhancing the overall welfare of their societies. One result is the massive rural to urban migrations that result in the Karachi, Dhaka, and Manila's of the World - unmanageable urban masses. The author is a firm believer in the importance of public sector extension agents - something that unfortunately has become anathema to the World Bank and USAID who believe that everyone should pay for whatever services they receive. They have successfully led a drive over the past 20 years to starve, eliminate, or privatize public extension services around the World. These extension agents may be underpaid and under supported but they usually live in the villages they work in, want to do good, and should be seen as an asset to take advantage of rather than eliminate.

This new book by John Mellor is an essential summary and explanation of what drives economic growth with poverty reduction for countries that decide to begin a serious journey to develop. Read together with two other books* on the historical lessons of economic development and poverty reduction, a very complementary trilogy, by different authors, look at the same issues from different points of view and arrive at very resonant conclusions and recommendations. This newest book brings the story up to the current decade in the most difficult continent, Africa, and shows that the focus on inclusive agricultural development at a country level still works to rapidly reduce poverty and stimulate the whole economy, not just the farming economy. Ethiopia has made this leap forward to lead all of sub-Saharan Africa in poverty reduction over the past 15 years. The country is now grappling with the next phases of development to increase exports and to diversify their economy, building on the gains in agriculture as the foundation, as so many now high income countries have done during the last century,* Read together with How Asia Works, by Joe Studwell and Asia Africa Development Divergence by David Henley.

This is the most comprehensive treatment of the problems and possibilities of agriculture for economic transformation and poverty reduction by a leading pioneers in the field

Review

"...the book is a work of tireless outward observation, with an astonishingly inventive and precise prose style....Baker’s feet may be on the ground, but his gaze is skyward, toward the birds he envies." — Lisa Darms, Bookforum"Remarkable...the lyrical prose hammers home the attraction of pitting predator against quarry." — Daily Telegraph (London)"A powerful evocation of East Anglia’s winter landscape, and an unforgettable portrait of a man’s passionate engagement with the natural world."— London Review of Books"The Peregrine should be known as one of the finest works on nature ever written…His words—precise, lyrical and intensely felt—seem to have been selected as if their author were under huge pressure, both from the depth of his feelings for the bird and the weight of experience he wished to impart…The only sadness about The Peregrine is that its author is no longer with us to be honoured afresh for his achievement."— BBC Wildlife Magazine"A nature study such as Mr. Baker has presented—not by any means restricted to the peregrine falcon—deserves warm praise for the remarkable perseverance and patience which has gone into its making, and when the observer is a gifted writer, as in the present instance, the result is even more gratifying."— Daniel A. Bannerman, The New York Review of Books"The Peregrine is one of the most beautifully written, carefully observed and evocative wildlife accounts I have ever read. Mr. Baker’s patience, his discriminating and unsentimental eye, and his passionate deliberations are utterly captivating."— Barry Lopez"This book goes altogether outside the bird book into something less naïve, into literature, into a kind of universal rapport…"— Geoffrey Grigson, Sunday Times (London)"…one need not know a hawk from a handsaw to take pleasure and profit from the book. It is an account by a curious, complicated man of a curious, complicated phenomenon, that will involve, instruct and excite a reader who can never hope and may never want to share the writer’s experience."— Bil Gilbert, Washington Post Book World"Mr. Baker is primarily a descriptive writer, and a good one, but his obsession has given him a kind of crazy empathy that lifts his book above mere observation."— The New Yorker“The Peregrine by J.A. Baker…[is] A darkly poetic and episodic work about a man obsessively watching wild peregrine falcons in the British countryside. Written at a time when the extinction of the peregrine and nuclear apocalypse both seemed imminent, this is a book about the poetry of death and loss as much as it is about hawks.” —Helen Macdonald, The Week

Purchased this after listening to an interview with director Werner Herzog, who stated that this is the only book that he *requires* all of his film students to take. He writes:"I’m Werner Herzog, I’m a filmmaker normally but I do read. The book I would really recommend is an obscure book published in 1967: “The Peregrine,” by J.A. Baker, who is somebody about whom we know nothing, literally nothing. He wrote in Great Britain when the last peregrines were dying out—now they have bounced back a little bit. He observes peregrines and it’s a most incredible book. It has prose of the caliber that we have not seen since Joseph Conrad. And an ecstasy—a delirious sort of love for what he observes. The intensity and the ecstasy of observation is something that you have to have as a filmmaker or somebody who loves literature. Whoever really loves literature, whoever really loves movies, should read that book.In a way, it’s almost like a transubstantiation, like in religion, where the observer becomes almost the object—in this case the falcon—he observes. He writes, for example, about the falcon soaring high up, and then higher and higher until the falcon is only a dot. Then he writes, “and then we swoop down,” as if he had become a falcon himself. And there’s a variety of moments where you can tell that he has completely entered into the existence of a falcon. And this is what I do when I make a film, I step outside of myself into an ekstasis in Greek, to step outside of your own body, a point outside. Baker steps into the fog and in an ecstasy of observing the world it is unprecedented."

No other way to put it: This book is a treasure of the English language. In The Peregrine J.A. Baker describes how he tracked and trekked over months and miles in his native England to watch and record in language like you've never read how peregrines hunt and feed and fly and play and rest. The language he uses to construct his sentences is like none other I have ever read. It's a vivid mix of nature writing and the best poetry. The text is so dense, the sentences are so packed with words bringing life to action--there really is no reading experience I can compare this to. I could only stand to read a few pages at a time; "relish" not "read" would be the better word there. This is more than "nature writing," too. Baker gets under the very surface of life to expose what lurks. Just a few excepts to illustrate:"The hardest thing of all to see is what is really there.""Terror seeks out the odd, and the sick, and the lost."“There is no mysterious essence we can call a 'place'. Place is change. It is motion killed by the mind, and preserved in the amber of memory.”“Whatever is destroyed, the act of destruction does not vary much. Beauty is vapour from the pit of death.”I cannot give The Peregrine anything less than 5 stars. It's more than a book, it is a reading experience. Reading it will expand your senses. It will enliven you and enrich you as a human being. I think that's the greatest thing we can expect from any book.

J. A. Baker's "The Peregrine" is a remarkable achievement in nature writing for both its style and substance, easily among the finest ever in the category. The book, in diary form, details the author's extensive viewing and tracking of peregrine falcons, but more accurately, his obsessive stalking of these birds of breathtaking speed and predatory skill, in the Essex countryside outside London during the fall of 1962 through the spring of 1963.Baker's singular style is the very model of concision. It is stark and stunning prose, often more like preternatural poetry, exceptional in its beauty. He is not simply reporting the activities of the peregrines, their prey, and their surroundings, he is fully within the action and its environs, and so, therefore, is the reader. It is an unmatched reading experience. Baker displays an uncanny ability to describe color, movement, landscape, and weather with brilliant clarity and nuance.Though less than 200 pages, this is not a quick or easy read. Best digested in small bites, I found it too intense for long sessions. Also, there are many passages, individual sentences, and striking word combinations which must be reread a time or two and lingered over in order to fully appreciate. There is a somewhat lurid focus on the peregrines' kills, unflinchingly described with a certain admiration. Indeed, as the seasons progress, the author increasingly identifies with the peregrine, simultaneously grousing a growing disdain for the human species: a thoroughly fascinating narrative posture. This is essential reading; an altogether unforgettable book.

Just gorgeous. Read it slowly and savor it like a box of rare and rich chocolate. If you're looking for an actual story with plot and tension and conflict and enemies, you're not going to get that. What you will get is prose that is so delicious and and new and perfect that you'll be highlighting every other line. And you'll get birds and nature up to your eyes and beyond, you'll get imagery so lush you'll drown in it in the most wonderful way.

One of the most amazing and boring books I have ever read. Boring in the sense that the book is only about a man keeping sight of a peregrine in England throughout the months of one year. Amazing because of his commitment, his dedication, his passion, his love, his recognition of beauty and ability to express it in the most beautifully written way keeps you reading and wondering, and totally in love. This book is not for everyone, and it does take as much patience as the writer himself who trudged the fields in search of the peregrine in rain and sun and cold, but you will be rewarded with a vision that is cinematic, profound, and transcending.

Everywhere I turned had the same general advice: build up a stash of frozen milk before returning to work, then pump while you're there to make up the missed feedings. However, there were never any specifics beyond ~100-200 ounces of stored milk (which is a huge range, by the way!). This book tells you how to make it happen, and how to keep it working.I wish I had gotten this and read it earlier than the week before I returned to work. My first day back was chaotic and stressful, but it would have been even worse if I hadn't read this first. It gave me the confidence to pump wherever and be prepared for it. It also made the very real confession that most working moms end up using at least some formula, which is relaxing some of my self-imposed pressure to match every ounce she drinks while also trying to build a freezer stash. One thing I still haven't seen addressed anywhere is what to do if you and your baby are fighting a thrush yeast infection. We have been trying to kill the stubborn little buggers from the very beginning and I was told not to freeze any milk for future use, since it would just re-introduce the yeast infection. Well, I'm back at work now, so there is no way to keep feeding breast milk unless I build up at least a little stash. The author's suggestion of feeding a few ounces of formula so you can freeze a meal's milk was helpful for this.Another possibility for a future chapter addition would be what to do if you can't pump as often at work as you would normally breastfeed. I get 3 30-minute sessions at my office's Mother's Room to harvest for 5 missed feedings. I don't always hit my quota in that limited time, and have to add a pumping session at night after she goes to bed, or pump extra on the weekend. Some ideas for how to manage this without creating an oversupply problem would be nice.

This book helped me a lot to plan my return to work after my 3 month maternity leave. I recommend it to any mom planning to keep breastfeeding her baby while going back to work, it provides not only relevant tools and tips but also it has a strong supportive tone of voice that help you to fight against internal and external pressures.I'm still on maternity leave but I'll update this post as soon as I'm back applying everything I've learned from it!

Very easy to read, does not feel like "research", feels more like hearing advice from a friend. I have not finished it yet, but if you also need breastfeeding/ pumping instruction you should purchase a 2nd book specifically for that. This book is written based on the assumption you have all your basic breastfeeding and pump-use questions already answered. Mainly focuses on planning for and implementing a pumping routine at work.

Loved this book. Author has a great sense of humor. It's an easy read, full of practical tips about what to expect and how to approach and interact with people at work regarding your pumping needs. Has some very good resource recommendations and tips as well. I particularly enjoyed the author's inclusion of personal recommendations and lists. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for the working, breastfeeding mom.

As a first time mom planning to go back to work this book was not only informative but it was funny, easy to read and will remain a wonderful resources as I move out of pregnancy and into nursing, pumping and working. Practical and applicable tips and information for how to navigate this phase of life as well as encouraging stories and examples from professional women, in all industries, who have been there and done that. I highly recommend this book for any mom planning to return to the workplace or any mom planning to pump at all.

Full of very helpful information, creative ideas, and product recommendations for working moms who want to keep breastfeeding when they return to work. This book addresses pretty much any issue that a working, pumping mom might face. Shortall writes with a casual, soothing, funny tone, perfect for moms who are on edge about pumping at work. Love this book! Highly recommend it as well as The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from La Leche League.

As a first time mom embarking on the journey of pumping at work, I was filled with anxiety. This book really put my mind at ease and gave me the confident boost I needed. Well written and easy to read... The real talk and humor made me feel like the author really knew what I was going through and I could connect to her.

This book is a life-saver! I was feeling extreme anxiety and confusion about how to breastfeed while working, and just had no idea how to even begin. All the books and websites I was looking at seemed to be written for stay-at-home moms, or moms with endless maternity leave, and they just weren't helpful. This book provides the perfect no-nonsense, practical guide on the logistics of pumping at work and maintaining milk supply, with lots of helpful tips and tricks. It's written in a straightforward and non-judgmental way, and is very refreshing. I've been pumping at work for several weeks now, and it's really not that bad! Reading this book really set me up to succeed and I'm so glad it's out there.
