The complexities and the difficulties of GDP are not frequently discussed, but they are well-described here - so is the necessity for a growth measure like GDP. This well-written little book frankly discusses both the pluses of GDP as well as the minuses, warts and all. Only God knows how, but the writer explains the subject matter competently for both the layperson and the professional economist - which is extremely rare, but most welcome. This makes the book well worth reading - to both laypersons and specialists alike.

Slim and readable: it only took me about three hours to go through it.Informative: it covers pretty much every issue I know of on the subject, the only exception I can think of being that she fails to educate the reader on the treatment of welfare state transfer payments (they are not included in GDP which, although that is mechanically correct, produces a misleading under-statement of government's role in the economy - a good chunk of the consumption in GDP is paid for with welfare state transfer payments that are not identified as such in GDP). Maybe also some topics are treated too lightly (household production) than others (surprising depth on financial services), but that's to be expected given the obvious intent to be brief. There were a couple recitations of formulas that I think are mis-stated but they were not significant to detract.Very good introduction to the topic, and more erudite and less polemical than I would have predicted when I opened it.Some of the other reviews, I think downgrade the book for not sharing the reviewer's ideological perspective. That is unfair to the author. The book's title is exceedingly accurate (which itself is rare in books in this field that often overstate their contents to make more sales): the author is not issuing a"a very conservative defense of GDP orthodoxy" to quote one such review. It is simply what the title says, a "brief but affectionate history". A basic understanding of the topic is a good thing in and of itself before one adopts a critical posture, and this book definitely contributes to such an understanding. Well done.

This updated edition provides an outstanding yet concise historical and conceptual foundation that not merely helps to grasp how the strengths of the aggregate variable known as GDP came to be so central to the thinking of economists and political leadership but also reveals the vulnerabilities and shortfalls born of arbitrary use of this quasi proxy variable and proxy variables in general. Will we eventually look to a different variable to determine such things as monetary policy for shaping domestic economic growth and standards of living as well as the approaches taken by the IMF, WB, and IDB toward struggling economies? After reading this, you might agree that there is room to explore the question.

I read GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History by Diane Coyle for three reasons: (1) to see if the book can be used as a textbook in a principles of macroeconomics class; (2) of course, to learn more about GDP and economic growth; and (3) to learn writing from an inspiring economics communicator.Arnold Kling rightly says that economic history can be used to teach macroeconomics more effectively. GDP presents a historical narrative of the evolution of GDP, which started as a result of war, and soon became the main macroeconomic indicator. So, yes, with a few explanations to clarify concepts, one can use the book in an introductory class on macroeconomics. The Gross Domestic Product has been criticised frequently. Critics argue, among other things, that GDP is not a good measure of social welfare, that it does not include the informal economy, and that it does not deal well with innovation. Those criticisms are justifiable and spot-on, but as Diane Coyle argues, in spite of its many handicaps the GDP is still a useful tool to measure economic performance. From the beginning GDP was not seen as a measure of social welfare, but of income and production. Of course, we need other indicators to measure welfare, but as far as income and production goes, the GDP is still useful. That does not mean that it is perfect, not at all. In fact, it needs serious modifications.I like Diane's writing style a lot. I follow her blog closely. However, I can not tell exactly what is so attractive about her writing. She explains her ideas and arguments with an almost optimal level of complexity, no more, no less. You can look at the way she describes GNP in the book. She could have given a long explanation but instead she just tells what is sufficient for understanding the main ideas in the book. The most important characteristic, I think, is that she asks big questions. At the end of the book she argues that, under the current digital and online economy, and everything that they imply we need a new definition of "the economy." That is a metaphysical claim of a mainly "physical" social science. So she makes one think big and not many writers can do that.Of course I am making huge simplifications of sharply elaborated arguments. .

Delivers exactly what the title promises: a presentation of the GDP concept emergence, its implementation heavily influenced by specific political and social conditions, its strengths and weaknesses as measuring tool. Everything is placed in the historical context, the disputes around various compromises are briefly presented and pro and cons arguments for various technical solutions adopted for measuring the economic activity are well balanced against each other. Yes, the GDP is far from being a perfect measure of economic activity and even less so for welfare or happiness. But when one understands its limits and biases, it still is a very useful instrument for the economists, the policy makers and the public at large. Wonderfully written.

Regardless of how you feel about any given Star Wars film, one thing that is just about undeniable is that each and every installment in the Star Wars series has wonderful design work. "Rogue One" is no exception, and "The Art of Rogue One" goes in-depth into the art and design of the characters, locations, and key sequences in the film. I had mixed feelings about the film on the whole, but I was incredibly impressed by the work of the art department and production design team. This book is a must-own if you enjoyed the film or enjoy great artwork. There is so much artwork here that one could spend hours going through and studying the images in the book. Some of my favorites are detailed below:- The designs of K2-SO, the film's new droid and likely a fan favorite from the film. The book shows very early concepts of K2, and well as artwork that looks to be near to the final film version of the droid.- Rough sketches of Jyn, including various alternate costume and gear designs.- Designs for the new all-black Death Troopers, Director Krennic's elite personal guards.- Illustrations of Krennic's encounter with Darth Vader in his castle on Mustafar.- Full two-page spreads of artwork from the Battle of Scarif (both the ground and air campaigns). In looking through the book, it's interesting to see how the design team takes cues from old Star Wars (necessary given the film's proximity to the original 1977 film) and build on it to create new designs. For example, you'll see the traditional TIE Fighter that you know and love, but you'll also be introduced to the TIE Striker (very similar in overall look and design, but a distinctive new shape).I really enjoyed spending time going through "The Art of Rogue One", and will likely find myself revisiting it many times in the future. The level of creativity on display in Star Wars is a major reason why it's my favorite film series, and books like this capture everything I love about the art and design of the movies.

So I received in the Mail today my favorite "Christmas Present" - The Art of Rogue One. - This is one of the best and most bad-assery books I have now. The images I so wanted to pause from the movie are in it including Darth Vader's Castle - various Concept Paintings. The book does not waste pages with photos from the movie, just pure image after image after image of conceptual design. Most of "The Art of" books" give a budding artist ideas (good ideas) on what to do to get inspired. The one I read today is that when they were developing the U-Wing, the art director gave the various concept artists a game/competition - draw as many as ideas in 1.5 minutes (GO!) and there are literally hundreds of great starship designs. That's how you do it!Highly recommend this book - 5 stars out of 5!Top rating!

This is yet another wonderful artbook for Star Wars. The quality is right up there, similar to the artbook for The Force Awakens. This 256-page hardcover is densely packed with concept art from front to back. The artworks are reproduced large, some pieces are printed across double pages. The huge reproduction sizes do make an impact and they surely look good. The bulk of the book features environment art, scene paintings and some storyboards. In smaller amount are the designs for characters, creatures, droids and spaceships. All the artworks are digitally painted, with a few pieces 3D rendered or 3D painted over. The environment artworks are breathtaking. The composition is wonderful, lighting beautiful, and the design and idea look great. The vast textured landscapes look and feel believable. They are painted with so much detail that I took my time to slowly peruse each piece, wondering how they would look like if actually printed as huge paintings on walls. If you're looking for character art, they are there but definitely not as many pages when compared to the environment art. You do see some costume designs, iteration for Jyn, the stormtroopers, robots. All the artworks are well captioned, and occasionally there are lengthy and insightful writeup on the design and story process. It's clear that a lot of work went into creating the concept art. More than hundreds of drawings were created just for spaceship designs. Kudos to all the artists from the art department. It's an amazing companion for the film. Highly recommended to fans of Star Wars and sci-fi concept art. It's one of 2016's top artbooks to me.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I'm an unabashed Star Wars fan, so this purchase was a no-brainer for me. It arrived in the mail one day after the movie was released in theaters/cinemas (delete as applicable based upon which side of the Atlantic you're on) and I waited until I'd seen Rogue One before cracking the book. This is a sumptious book, nicely bound and printed on high-quality paper. Clocking in at 256 pages, it's also good value. You get a lot of bang for your book here: each of the planets visited in the movie are covered (and there are quite a few of them), as are the starships, fighters, shuttles, and other tech. The cast of characters are also featured, and the book takes you from the first concept art through to the final designs. This is a book that Star Wars fans will want to return to after each viewing of the movie, and even the casual reader can appreciate the sheer amount of effort that went into designing and producing the latest Star Wars blockbuster. Highly recommended for Star Wars fans (five stars) and recommended for others (four stars).

I Only made it through three chapters. I do not want to read all the profanity. I was looking for ways to help my child with some learning problems and I wasted my money on this. When he joined a child in dropping the F-bomb that was the last attempt at finishing the book.

Horrible language. Poor ability to express himself without obscenities. Threw in trash after first few chapters. Very disappointed because I was very interested in reading his perspective.

Great read to remind me of how special my son is!

Interesting perspective.

Wonderful journey of discovery about the shared humanity of all people. I have seen Jonathan Mooney speak and he is a brilliant and powerful advocate for a most worthy cause.

I appreciated the straightforwardness and truth in this book. It opened my eyes to what “school” was really doing to my child—crushing his spirit. I will attend the next IEP meeting with new eyes.

This book was very touching and eye opening. Everyone should read this book to become more aware and sensitive to others and recognize and accept the unique qualities people have. All teachers and students, especially those who require special services, should read this book!

Very timely and interesting read. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested (or appauled) by Americans' obsession with guns and gun politics (for and against). It's well-written with clear prose, and it leans much more heavily towards the readings of the 2nd Ammedment, which means more of a focus on the last century. As other reviewers have noted, the book reads as if the author has an implicit bias in favor of greater gun control. That said, I have yet to find a book that does not not have an apparent bias one way or other. As such, I recommend that anyone interested the subject read several books with varying opinions.

I learned a lot of specific history about the creation of America's constitution. The fears, the compromises, the visionary reach of its creators all led to an imperfect but wonderful compromise. The sometimes tortured history since is covered through the very specific lens of the author, who allows his bias in favour of sensible gun control, and a judiciary that knows it's place, to run freely throughout. That colors, but doesn't distort the facts presented. This is a worthwhile read for anyone curious to know what the second amendment actually says (it's one whole sentence!), and to understand how the society that founded it, and evolved around it has interpreted its meaning for over 2 centuries of changing times.I recommend it.

The book is an excellent history of the writing of the 27 word amendment and subsequent coverage of the Heller Supreme Court Case that reversed 200 years of gun control legislation. A very good reference source to have.

Waldman presented an excellent critique of the "originalism" as applied to the decide Heller. The history of the Second Amendment and the gun movement he put together helped me go beyond sound bites. I will likely reread this book in the future.

whether you're Republican, Democrat, Independent, or other, you need to read this book. A great historical summary of the 2nd Amendment from the framers through current day. Think you know all about the 2nd Amendment's drafting, how it's been interpreted and used by the left and the right, and how the legal interpretation has change, or not? You'll be greatly enlightened by this historical account. An unbiased look at how the Amendment came to be, and how lawyers, judges, the Supreme Court, and various groups have interpreted it, and change interpretations, over the decades since adoption.

When I look at reviews of books like this, I get depressed. Many people evaluate it in terms of preconceived political values. The author clearly has a perspective, but he is pretty much on target about the uncertainty of the meaning of the Second Amendment. For those of you unfamiliar with this part of the Constitution, one of the Bill of Rights, here is what it says: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." So, what does that mean? Aye, there's the rub.If you look at the debates of the time that this amendment was being developed and the politics of its approval, there is uncertainty. Some major figures expressly associated it with a militia--assuming, to some, that such bodies would meet regularly and practice their art. Others thought that it included hunting. And so on. The point: This amendment was born in circumstances where there were questions. The statement on militia cannot easily be avoided--but the actors debating the meaning were not of one mind. So, the amendment was founded in something of a fog. You don't have to take the author's word--read the discussion at the time. I have looked at some of that documentation (years ago and without reference to this book) and can say that only a fool would say that the meaning of this amendment is clear. The book spends most of its time looking at the conflict over the meaning of the amendment and the process by which this passage in the Constitution went from little discussion to the Supreme Court rejecting an individual right to forearms (including non-liberal Chief Justice Warren Burger suggesting that an individual right to firearms was ludicrous). And that is the key for this volume, the evolving understanding of the Second Amendment. Regardless of the author's perspective, he does a fine job in outlining that evolution (albeit he has a critical take on that). In the end--whatever one's views on the subject--the book provides an analysis of the evolution of a Constitutional doctrine that was murky at its inception.

Didn't seem too polemic one way or the other. Does highlight how little the Founding Fathers left regarding what they were thinking regarding the right to bear arms. Points out how conveniently the NRA leaves out the clause about "well regulated militia" and how NRA was largely responsible for the INDIVIDUAL right to bear arms.

This is a great work for anyone trying to understand the background that led to the drafting of the Second Amendment. Those who are curious about constitutional law will also benefit by reading this book.

About me: I'm a grad student in math, but have no prior experienceof the topic of the book. I have actually not yet read the 40last pages or so, so the review is about the rest of the book.I will be quite negative below, so I want to start by sayingthat most chapters are OK, and I love short books. And thisbook gives you a quick way of getting aquainted with various modelsof computation. I dont agree with the official reviewer thatit goes in to depth or is extremely clear and well written. On the contrary, it does NOT go into depth in all chapters, butis rather uneven. I really liked the chapter about lambda-calculus.My general impression is that the author is often saying"how to think" about the definitions and concepts, and what theyintuitively are, rather than precisely saying what the definition IS.I believe that the cause of my confusion, other than perhaps ignorance,is the lack of crucial pieces of information. (See examples below). Many times I found myself confused after reading a definition, andreally needed an example to clarify what was going on. Althoughthere are fairly many examples in the book, there were several placesin desperate need thereof. It is mostly chapters 5 and 7 that I find confusing.Example (chapter 5, on logic programs) Definitive clauses - Program clauses and Goals - are defined. A definitive clause is P1 or (not P2 or not P3 .... or not Pn), i.e. a disjunction of so called "literals", and atmost one literal is positive. A definitive clause is a Goal if we remove P1, i.e. we have only negative literals. The problem is that there is only a definition of what a Goal is but not what meeting a Goal is... Only a very vague and incomplete explaination is given: "Program clauses can be seen as defining a database: [...] Goals are questions to be answered using the information about the problem in the database. This can be better seen with some examples." Then there is only ONE example in which the goal has only ONE negative literal. That leaves the reader wondering if each literal P2, ...., Pn should be true or just "atleast one of them". Since the notation for a goal is :- P2,P3,...,Pn you might believe that the goal is to deduce ALL of the Pi's, but since its a disjunction of negative literals, mathematically it only makes sense if the goal clause should be disproven, which means that ONE of the Pi's hold. It gets even more confusing later on. Although I might have my self to blame for some of the confusion, I am pretty convinced this is far from optimally written.Other complaints:There are some flaws in the technique of writing. For example the author mentionsmultisets several times, but gives the definition only the last time. On anotherinstance a new symbol is used and defined afterwards. There is also a logical flaw on page 61. There is an argument that "bounded minimisation"of a primitive recursive predicate is also primitive recursive. The argument uses a lemma whose input are functions f_1, ..., f_k that are primitive recursivetotal functions. Then the lemma is applied in a case where f_1 is a priori only partially defined.I'm sure its possible to fix this argument, but it still makes life unneccesarily difficult forthe reader.

We have a considerable collection of Hummel Figurines and Plates which we have gatheredfrom Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Bahamas, and South Florida. We ordered this Warman's M.J. Hummel Field Guide from Amazon since we needed a practicalsource of information and price guide for our Hummels and for a reference for purchases.Since our collection began in 1972 and ran thru to date, we needed a reference book todetermine the current value. This Field Guide is convenient to carry around while shoppingand evaluating possible purchases.

Many of the Hummels listed were given a very broad price range...Since TMK 1 through TMK 7 of the same humme is of a different value I would like to see each TMK mark valued individually....not lumped in one category (example) Hum 175 Mothers Darling TMK 1-7 $145.00 - $480.00 That does not tell me the value of a TMK 4 or a TMK 5 This book is too generalized...I would never buy this book again nor would I recommend it to my friends....

The product pricing is too general for the value of Hummels. They givethe same price on items whether they are 50 years old or justtwo or three. I would suggest the "Miller price guide toM.I. Hummel" figurines for accurate pricing.

Good little reference book

Very Good

This Guide has many pictures of figurines although photos of detailed areas are lacking. Finding individual figurines can be somewhat complicated. Needed information is here, but may take some searching to find it.

Good condition even though not the most helpful book for assessing values.

This small volume is a good update to the larger, but older, guide book I already have. I got it for the more updated values.

I just finished reading this and closed the book with a satisfying snap. As with all really good to great books, I finished it knowing more, in the case of this book much more, than when I started. This isn't really a book for the young, although some will get good from it. It's a book for those of us who are of a certain age, or, have parents of a certain age and are wrestling with what the means to them, and to us.It is also not a book for devout theists of any flavor. Ehrenreich's atheism is in full view throughout the book.Although not what I would call a consistently uplifting read, I would say that I finished the book with a sense of calm and a far better appreciation for dealing with end of life issues and thoughts that come from the existential nihilism many of feel as we get older in general. I also found it very well written and an easy read (I finished it over a couple of days). Although I wouldn't recommend it to everyone I know (in particular the born-again Christian types, or any other particularly religiously fanatic person), I would recommend it to a majority.Buy the physical version. Read it. Share it with those you love. You won't regret it.

What a treat it was to read this book! I’m not familiar with events at the cellular level in my body, or whatever else is going on in there, as long as it doesn’t hurt. But Ehrenreich makes this understandable, fascinating, funny, and serious at the same time. The book, however, isn’t all about cells. She takes us through a critical look at our health fads and dissects their supposed beneficial benefits. Turns out, you can eat all the kale and seaweed or whatever’s in style right now, but it won’t save you from your eventual death; we’re all going to die, right? Our deaths depend on many things we have no control over, such as cancer, a heart attack, or nuclear war. Ehrenreich also examines our burgeoning “preventive medicine” culture as a huge money-maker for doctors and hospitals, but not necessarily of much benefit to people.I’ve always wondered why death is practically taboo in our culture; it’s treated as something to whisper about and to avoid at all cost. I’ve known lots of people who are scared to death about dying. Why? If you’re religious, you get to live in Heaven for eternity (which doesn’t sound too good to me; wouldn’t it get boring?). Or if you’re not religious, you can imagine nothingness: no pain, heartache, regrets, money issues, etc. Are we so self-centered that we can’t imagine not being alive? The takeaway: enjoy your life while you can, don’t go crazy over food or exercise fads, and go gently into that good night when your time comes.

Wow, what a disappointment. Perhaps my expectations were too high? I acknowledge that I expected a lot from the writer of "Nickel and Dimed", the book that changed my tipping habits in particular and my view of the life of the low-level worker in general. And the subject matter of "Natural Causes" was perfectly in sync with my circumstances: dealing with advancing age and a cancer diagnosis. My situation has been fermenting since early 2017 and by now I've come to the conclusion that my generation, the boomers, are not going to put up with the medical / pharmaceutical / health insurance industry's standard operating procedures. Instead, we were going to take charge of our lives, our healthcare, and the manner of our death. After reading the NY Times review of this book, and hearing the author interviewed in a Slate podcast, I put in my order to Amazon immediately. I was confident I would enjoy reading somebody who was both an excellent writer and with a solid background in science, and whose views about healthcare in later years seemed to parallel my own. My hope was that along with enjoying the book, I'd be provided with arguments I could use in endlessly frustrating discussions with doctors and insurers. (Example of a frustrating discussion: I value quality of life over quantity, but my doctors take the opposite view and plan treatment accordingly. Whose opinion should prevail? Well, whose life is it, anyway?)With my expectations at such a high level, I was all the more unprepared for a laborious, poorly researched and prepared kvetch against the medical establishment that by its weakness made the issues at hand appear overly subjective and self-centered. Barbara Ehrenreich, what has happened to you?If wanting to be in charge of your medical treatment means you are self-centered, I stand guilty. I don't buy into the myth of the doctor as the all-knowing oracle for curing your ills, and that the patient should be a passive partner in the treatment planning process. But I wasn't ready for Ehrenreich's attempt early on in the book to demonize the medical profession, or reject doctors' advice out of hand. Her attitude harks back to man-hating excesses of early-generation feminism as Ehrenreich equates colonoscopies with sexual assault. Or, when she interprets the (always male, she asserts) gynecologist's white jacket as identifying the dominant player in a ritual where the woman receiving a pelvic exam is deliberately positioned in a receptive position. To me this is nonsense, the fantasy of someone who feels victimized by everything and who assigns absurd motivations to her supposed oppressor. In places, this author seems to have lost touch with reality. It doesn't get better. I have no time for new-age homeopathic practitioners, so was surprised to read this Ph D's accusation that after aligning medicine with science in the late 19th century, the profession "won its monopoly over the business of healing" by deriding homeopathy, chiropractic, and other forms of quackery as "pseudoscience." But they are!She dismisses preventive care as mostly a scam, and even though she exercises she condemns striving for fitness as just another example of our culture of narcissism. There are worthwhile arguments to be made against the excesses of medical testing and the false promises of the fitness industry, but Ehrenreich doesn't bother to make them. Instead she merely accuses, and even the logic of her accusations doesn't add up. Her sloppy writing and gratuitous arguments undermine legitimate criticism of these subjects and so do us all a disservice. In similar fashion, she writes off the mindfulness movement to the machinations of Silicon Valley. She accuses the software developers of drumming up the trend toward mindfulness in order to sell mindfulness-related software. How she makes this connection is beyond me. I've worked in tech since the '80s and am aware there are some mindfulness apps out there, but in this multi-billion dollar industry they fail to register on anybody's bottom line, except perhaps those of a few startups. My reading of her attack on Silicon Valley is that she doesn't like the tech industry and is using the mindfulness fad to accuse the industry of manipulation. When so many far more relevant examples are available -- Facebook's use of user data for example -- her mindfulness argument is just silly. Because it loosely ties in with the book's theme she can justify its inclusion. But her argument is at best naive and at worst disingenuous. Our death-denying culture and the industries that profit from it are worthwhile subjects for criticism, and Ehrenreich goes after them. Logically she argues that no matter how hard we exercise, how carefully we eat, how piously we avoid tobacco and alcohol, we nevertheless will end up dead. Healthy living advocates portray age and disease as personal failings that could be avoided if only we were less self-indulgent. Fair ball, but then she goes over the top and accuses "elites" in the upper middle class of depriving working-class people of their justified enjoyment of one of the few activities that reduce their stress level: smoking. Yes, she defends the tobacco industry and criticizes rising cigarette taxes that "hurt the poor and the working class hardest." Once again in this book Ehrenreich demeans valid criticism of the wellness industry by veering off the path of logic and common sense and defending the undefendable. Her screwy logic is used against advocates of immunotherapy, a new approach to cancer that is generating enthusiasm and research -- and in a few cases, amazing success. But no, she argues, utilizing the immune system in the fight against cancer won't work because one cell type in the immune system, the macrophage, can actually switch sides and defend malignant cells from attack. With that single example she rules out an avenue of research that has only recently become viable due to advances in technology and the mapping of the genome. (In another part of the book, she wonders if much of the massive machinery used in medical treatment these days is actually fake, constructed and installed to impress and make compliant the patient.)I don't know what's up with Barbara Ehrenreich, who is now 76. I'm a believer in Billy Wilder's maxim, "You're only as good as the best thing you've ever done." And I can attest that Ehrenreich has done some of the best investigative writing I've read. There's got to be a reason she fails so badly with this book. To get many of her zany accusations into print she must have fought tooth and nail with her publisher and her editor. I'm guessing that her previous successes and her status as a money-making author enabled her to prevail. This book is going to do Ehrenreich's reputation no good, and may even demean some of the good writing she has done in the past. Worse, her lazy and self-gratifying arguments trivialize a major issue facing an aging America: delivery of compassionate, patient-focused healthcare to a large population, the boomers, who have pretty much had things their way so far in life.We boomers are not going to allow our old age to be "medicalized" as Ehrenreich astutely puts it. If treatment is required, we want to know the alternatives and make the final call. This requires on our part a considerable amount of self-education about our affliction, but the internet provides us with legitimate sources of information that enable us to become "informed patients" who have earned the right to engage in a discussion with our doctors, as opposed to listening to a dissertation about what they're going to do to us next. We've earned the right to call a halt to endless rounds of debilitating therapy and go to palliative care. And when that is exhausted, it will be our choice to go to hospice care, preferably in-home, and with the option of assistance from our doctor at the end of life so we don't have to endure intractable pain and needless suffering for weeks or months before we expire.I'm hopeful that my generation will achieve a high quality of life through our senior years, that we'll control our illnesses rather than the other way around, and that we will learn to accept the inevitability of age and death early on, and have the authority to determine the time and manner of our death. The infrastructure is in place but attitudes of all the players need reality adjustments: We boomers must learn to age gracefully, our caregivers must learn to work with us rather than dictate to us, and the medical options as we near life's end -- palliative and hospice based -- need to be funded sufficiently to meet the requirements of our long-lived generation. All these must come to pass, and I am disappointed this acclaimed writer was unable to move the process forward.

I'm a long-time fan of Ehrenreich; but I was disappointed with this book. Unlike Nickeled and Dimed or Bright-Sided, this takes a very big subject, has a very large thesis about it--and fails to deliver. The author excels in finding and debunking frauds and social wrongs--the treatment of poor workers or people on the skids, in particular. But her effort to take on the entire medical establishment and alternative medicine, and even whole philosophical ideas about the nature of ourselves and the world is piecemeal, of course. It falls too quickly into diatribe, substitutes gibes for real reasoning, and fails to avoid logical fallacies. The thesis is a good one, a timely one--but the book does not succeed in its exposition.

My husband and I are about the same age as Ehrenreich. Everyone thinks that if you have excellent insurance you are home free- however that does not prevent doctors from using you as a cash cow or a sa guinea pig for their latest money making office test. She exposes the underbelly of a medical profession that is not as knowledgeable in science as one is led to believe and preys on our fear of death. I got news for you- it's going to happen.A total joy to read- not another 10 ways to live longer crappy book. Liberating.
