This is not a review of the book, which is a classic. It is a review of this edition, which has been put out on Amazon's self-publishing format CreateSpace. The thing that one does not know when purchasing this book is that each page consists of a double column of text. (See photo.) Maybe some people like this, but I don't. The lines of type are too long to be newspaper style but too short to be the length of a line of type in a normal book. I don't really like reading a book like this, thus the low rating. ps I also think it is deceptive of the publisher to not show any of these pages in the "Look Inside" sample that Amazon provides. pps The translator is not named. Seems unprofessional.

A few typos aside, I do not regret for a single minute taking the time to slowly read this book, and think about it. The chapters are very short and numerous, and it is easy to read a little bit at a time. Gandhi has an easy and friendly way of speaking to the reader, and I found myself admiring the memory he displayed, as well as the moral principles he strove to uphold. He is also able to inject a very light touch of humor into the description of some very difficult situations. Before reading this book, I would not have guessed that he had tried to commit suicide as a young man (by taking poisonous seeds), and I was thankful for the frankness with which he expresses his trials and flaws. He called his delving into many aspects of life an "experiment", and he succeeded in making a positive difference on so many lives.

First, I would like to say how much I admire Gandhi. I think he was one of the greatest men of the 20th Century.But, this book was just plain hard to read. The style was more like reading legislation than reading a life story. That probably makes sense, given Gandhi's educational training. This style might work for a short, thoughtful treatise on a specific topic. But, 500+ pages in this style was just too much.I finally did get through the book. I would like to say that it was worth it, to get to know Gandhi better. And, that might be true if this book was the only way to get to know Gandhi, but it's not. There are many other sources to learn about him. I think it would be better to chose one of the others.

This book ends just as Gandhi's life was getting interesting. In the Final chapter he says that there's no reason to discuss the last seven years because the facts are so well-known. Well they aren't well-known to me and frankly that's why I bought this book, to learn from his own hand about the events that ended British rule in India. There is absolutely nothing in this book about that. However I can tell you how difficult it is to find a loom and a splinter and that Gandhi insisted that his robe be 45 cm wide. Honestly it's a lot of discussion of who was in which meeting at which time while he was a lawyer in south Africa and very little about his civil rights fighting especially given the length of the book. If you're interested in Gandhi's leadership of the civil rights and national rights movements in India I'm sure there are much better sources . I would say that about once every 10 pages I found a couple of sentences that were interesting regarding his views on ahimsa but that's about it. Obviously he is one of the great figures in modern society but this book does not really support that or show why .

I have been wanting to read about Gandhi for some time and I noticed this on the Kindle list and started reading it.He has written this in an easily read form and it is mostly as if he is talking to the reader.He covers his life as he saw it and provides the reader with insight as to what moved him to his life of serving.I never knew that he got his start in serving in South Africa.I think this should be required reading for students as it is a wonderful book and not slanted by anyone other than Gandhi himself.I highly recommend it.

Gandhi's story was a bit long-winded, and he talked so self-righteously about himself at times to the point of annoying-ness...some things he talked about (i.e. his diet) I found quite irrelevant. It was interesting to read that he was married at a very young age - I never knew that, and the complexities of that marriage made him seem more real. There were points where I almost felt he looked down on black South Africans, like it was wrong for white South-Africans to treat Indians poorly, but a totally different story all together with how they treated Black people (i.e. one night he was taking a walk down a South African road and was berated by a white man. One of Gandhi's white friends caught this and got mad at the white man for berating Gandhi. Gandhi said something to the effect of 'Oh forgive him, he just thought I was a black man') - this is paraphrased, but you get the just of it.Still, his determination and fight for Indians to be treated equally was inspirational. His peaceful protests are what eventually inspired Martin Luther King and, to a point, Nelson Mandela, fight for the rights of blacks in America (King) and South Africa (Mandela). So for that, and for refusing to accept the racist status quo for his people, Gandhi was an inspiration.

A good read.

I have a really hard time finding books that keep my interest any more. I have a ton of kindle books I downloaded thinking they were sci-fi, fantasy or dystopian only to find out they are really romances. Ill never read them, but every once in awhile I find a real gem. This series is one. I am sorry they are over. Good job!

I am going to give the same review for each of the 3 books as all I can say is that they were brilliant, non stop action and a great story to boot, loved the characters. Could not put all three books down and I hope their is a continuation of this epic tale.

I don't normally write a reviews of books I read, I just recommend books I like to my friends. So hopefully I have a few million new friends because this is one of the best vampire books I've read so you should as well.

I read these so fast due to it being an amazing page turner. I am looking forward to more from this world. Great start, middle and end to the saga.

This story sucks you in . . . Yes, I went there. Alex is not a perfect person, but she's a great character. She's not alone, as the other members of her team became as dear to me as they were to her and when she lost a member, I felt as if l'd lost a friend too. Loved the ending and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

If you like vampire genre books, read this! If you like post-apocalypse genre books, read this! Well-written character development, plot twists, whiplash-inducing reveals that make sense in hindsight... this book delivers. The only downside is that I finished on the plane and didn't have the second book with me!

I recently discovered P.T. Hylton through his Deadlock Trilogy and I enjoy his style very much. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in this new trilogy!

This book is a must read for everyone! Jason gives a look into the male heart and gives useful information that helps me feel confident and better equipped to raise my son and welcome him into manhood.

This book is amazing! Jason Craig identifies a problem that is upending our society from both a spiritual and cultural standpoint. Once you read this book you will realize how masculinity and rights of passage are being smothered in the modern world and the consequences that are taking place as a result. However, there is hope! Craig offers solutions to this epidemic by citing research on ancient rites of passage as well as church teaching. If every man read this book and put into practice what they learned from it, the world would be changed forever. A must read!

I recieved my copy a week ago, couldn't put it down, finished it by the following evening and haven't stopped recommending it since. I actually bought a second copy so that I could share it with more people faster!Every man and parent of a son (mothers included) will benefit from the wisdom and truth this book contains. I have worked with youth and young adults for 7+ years in ministry and I cannot tell you how true the issues outlined in these pages ring with my own experience of boys. I finished the book with such a clear outline in my mind of what mentoring these kids (and assisting their parents) in raising virtuous men should look like.Thank you, Jason, for what you have given of yourself in researching and writing this book, including your own role as a mentor and brother to the boys and men fortunate enough to be involved in your apostolates!

If you are a dad, you have to read this book before it is too late. Before your sons get to the age of adulthood but aren't really adults. Mothers should read this book as well. It explains a few things about why boys do the crazy things they do. Every page in this book is better than the page before. Leaving Boyhood Behind inspires me to be the best example of a man I can be for my sons. I love it!!!

I would say this book is an excellent guide to “time management” for entrepreneurs, authors and other achievers, but it’s not your typical time management book. No one can really manage time, we can only manage our attitudes and activities. Those are two things we can control. Having the wisdom to know what we can control and what we can't is a big part of the philosophy embraced in this book.Author Craig Ballantyne shows you how to manage attitudes and activities to create a perfect day, and that’s what makes this book different from others in this genre.One thing that appealed to me about this book is that Craig’s advice, which is in fact very much geared toward entrepreneurs, is the same advice I’ve heard from some of the best and most prolific writers in the world, and that is to master your mornings. I’ve known a few night owls who have reached the pinnacle of success in their fields, but I’ve found that is more the exception than the rule. There seems to be something magical about getting it done in the morning and Craig’s book explains how and why.A second plus, for me at least, is that this book is short and to the point. The total length is only 153 pages. I feel that if an author is going to write a book on productivity, time management or controlling your days, it must be concise, to practice what the author preaches and to respect the reader’s time. I recently read a New York Times Bestselling book on productivity which was almost 300 pages and it could have been half the length because half of it was filled with anecdotes (no doubt required by the publisher, to fluff the book up to the “proper length.”)A third aspect of this book that resonated with me was Craig’s references to stoic philosophy, of which I am a big reader and fan. Anyone else who has read the likes of Epictetus and enjoyed the reading, will surely also enjoy Craig’s approach to productivity and mastering your mornings and days.Other parts of the book that stood out to me included the advice on rituals, life rules, scripting, responsibility, habits, beating procrastination, managing email and knowing not just what to do, but what NOT to do.Although I don’t plan to go to bed at 8 pm and get up at 4 am as Craig does (and he doesn’t demand that you do either), I have taken his advice and started getting up earlier than I was before and devoting that “found time” to writing or to marketing and product creation work that will impact the bottom line of my business. I have to say, there really is something about getting it done early. That goes for business and creative work, just as it does for health and fitness.

This is simply the best book I have ever read on personal productivity, I am not sure how the author packed so much good stuff in this book, but I am flabbergasted at the usefulness of this book.The idea of energy has been broached by other authors, but this author gives you a way to capitalize on this aspect, by focusing on your mornings as your uber important moment in the day. Also the idea of planning this morning the day before is simply brilliant, it allows you to plan during the end of the previous day at your low energy point, then the next morning no excuses, you act on that list like a unrelenting automaton. I am very analytical and I find it difficult making complex decisions, but I know I make those the day before, then during that morning it is about sticking to the list and following the Action Plan. I cannot relate how useful this has been, like a light bulb going on when I heard it, it was like, wow that makes perfect sense, and why I struggle so much with procrastination.Several other books I highly recommend for their own contributions1. Simple Rules ( Hull & Eisenhardt ) Craig uses this technique, w/o referencing it,but this book is amazing for highlighting the value of simple rules for cognitive performance.2. The War of Art ( Pressfield ) if you are a person who makes a living with open ended creative driven projects like writing, this book changes your way of thinking about the task, eye opening, and right on point. Resistance kills your book in the crib, if you are not careful.3. Grit ( Duckworth ) This book shows how talent is overrated, that passion and perseverance are more important to success, amazing scientific treatise on a soft science topic that is extremely important to people; stunning that this was not known sooner, but at least we now know.4. The Obstacle is the Way ( Holiday ) This book basically says effort is a habit, and avoiding effort is not the way, the way is accepting that effort needed, and earning the reward. In a world so focused on the easy way out, this book again, says human nature needs to embrace the effort required and get on with the job. The hard way, is the right way, don't be shy of difficulty, and reap the rewards.Remember the Rules you use are specific to you, and may require modification throughout your life, allow for changes and refinements over time, but always review daily, find the right balance between inflexible and flexible in your rules.This book capitalizes on the fact that willpower is limited, and Rules & Routines require less willpower over time because none of us is a superhero, and the only way to become successful is generally over the longer term, improving, and persisting until you reach of level of excellence that frankly is almost unrealistic on day one.God bless and many thanks to the author of this fabulous book!

I used to read Big Nate when I was a pre-teen in the comics section of the Washington Post. Since my son has now read every single Big Nate book ever published I decided to read Payback Time to see if the humor has stayed fresh.Surprisingly, despite some 25 odd years, Lincoln Pierce continues to find humor in the adventures of the self-obsessed but good natured and likable Nate. While certainly not for adults, my nine-year old was laughing out loud while reading.If your child already likes the humor of Big Nate they’ll like Payback Time. Nate continues to experience the stress, joys and perspective of the pre-teen years of many Americans. If Big Nate hasn’t been to your child’s liking, don’t expect any changes. The same formula persists as in earlier books, to the point where certain cartoons almost seem formulaic.But less important than my opinion is my son’s who simply devoured it. In a few words, Pierce writes a new book with the same winning formula he has used for several decades. Recommended for elementary school aged children.

There were a couple recitations of formulas that I think are mis-stated but they were not significant to detract.Very good introduction to the topic, and more erudite and less polemical than I would have predicted when I opened it.Some of the other reviews, I think downgrade the book for not sharing the reviewer's ideological perspective. That is unfair to the author. The book's title is exceedingly accurate (which itself is rare in books in this field that often overstate their contents to make more sales): the author is not issuing a"a very conservative defense of GDP orthodoxy" to quote one such review. It is simply what the title says, a "brief but affectionate history". A basic understanding of the topic is a good thing in and of itself before one adopts a critical posture, and this book definitely contributes to such an understanding. Well done.

This updated edition provides an outstanding yet concise historical and conceptual foundation that not merely helps to grasp how the strengths of the aggregate variable known as GDP came to be so central to the thinking of economists and political leadership but also reveals the vulnerabilities and shortfalls born of arbitrary use of this quasi proxy variable and proxy variables in general. Will we eventually look to a different variable to determine such things as monetary policy for shaping domestic economic growth and standards of living as well as the approaches taken by the IMF, WB, and IDB toward struggling economies? After reading this, you might agree that there is room to explore the question.

I read GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History by Diane Coyle for three reasons: (1) to see if the book can be used as a textbook in a principles of macroeconomics class; (2) of course, to learn more about GDP and economic growth; and (3) to learn writing from an inspiring economics communicator.Arnold Kling rightly says that economic history can be used to teach macroeconomics more effectively. GDP presents a historical narrative of the evolution of GDP, which started as a result of war, and soon became the main macroeconomic indicator. So, yes, with a few explanations to clarify concepts, one can use the book in an introductory class on macroeconomics.The Gross Domestic Product has been criticised frequently. Critics argue, among other things, that GDP is not a good measure of social welfare, that it does not include the informal economy, and that it does not deal well with innovation. Those criticisms are justifiable and spot-on, but as Diane Coyle argues, in spite of its many handicaps the GDP is still a useful tool to measure economic performance. From the beginning GDP was not seen as a measure of social welfare, but of income and production. Of course, we need other indicators to measure welfare, but as far as income and production goes, the GDP is still useful. That does not mean that it is perfect, not at all. In fact, it needs serious modifications.I like Diane's writing style a lot. I follow her blog closely. However, I can not tell exactly what is so attractive about her writing. She explains her ideas and arguments with an almost optimal level of complexity, no more, no less. You can look at the way she describes GNP in the book. She could have given a long explanation but instead she just tells what is sufficient for understanding the main ideas in the book. The most important characteristic, I think, is that she asks big questions. At the end of the book she argues that, under the current digital and online economy, and everything that they imply we need a new definition of "the economy." That is a metaphysical claim of a mainly "physical" social science. So she makes one think big and not many writers can do that.Of course I am making huge simplifications of sharply elaborated arguments. .

Delivers exactly what the title promises: a presentation of the GDP concept emergence, its implementation heavily influenced by specific political and social conditions, its strengths and weaknesses as measuring tool. Everything is placed in the historical context, the disputes around various compromises are briefly presented and pro and cons arguments for various technical solutions adopted for measuring the economic activity are well balanced against each other. Yes, the GDP is far from being a perfect measure of economic activity and even less so for welfare or happiness. But when one understands its limits and biases, it still is a very useful instrument for the economists, the policy makers and the public at large. Wonderfully written.
