This is truly an incredible book, and has changed the way I look at friendship. For anyone fascinated by the soul, spiritual poetry, or friendship, especially by the friendship of Rumi and Shams of Tabriz, one of the greatest creative mysteries of all time, get your hands on this book! Reading about their relationship and the poetry they both penned, all incredibly presented and translated by Coleman Barks, who I believe is a genius, has allowed me to see connections in an entirely different way, as "soul friendships.”This compilation by Barks is truly a gift to all readers and lovers of Rumi! It is just as stellar as many of his other bestselling translations such as The Big Red Book, Bridge to the Soul, The Essential Rumi and The Book of Love, all of which I have read.Some of my favorite passages from Soul Fury are below. Half of the book is the words of Rumi, the other half from Shams of Tabriz. I love Rumi’s poems about his spiritual path and his love for God. Movement and dancing were important for the Shams. I wonder if the shams represent God’ s Oneness, Love and Spirit. I think it’s important to read other material outside my faith tradition and to expand the depth of God’s love for me.

I bought this because I especially like Coleman Barks Rumi translation. Coleman barks makes Rumi approachable by translating it into the American English Idiom. Of course Rumi was the best poet, But reading it translated and organized by Coleman Barks is just so much better. I appreciate the wisdom passed on here. I love how Mr. Barks does not shy away from including the graphically sexual parts. It's wonderfully shocking and really takes the point home for me. It's taking me forever to wade through this work because it is all so delicious. I have to read stop and reflect. I find myself sharing these poems which almost always seem spot on with my dear friends. It's my new thing to do. I should have bought this sooner.

I have "The Essential Rumi," also translated by Barks, which I have read cover-to-cover, and then some. This is an excellent addition to a collector of Rumi, as it is a departure in form from what is found in The Essential Rumi, but equally as wonderful and transformative.

We all need daily soul food and nobody is better than Rumi.

BARKS is a genius like no other at interpreting Rumi's age-old words into modern, relatable text. BARKS is to be credited for his contributions to preserving and spreading the legacy and message of Rumi, and Rumi is to be credited for having written words centuries ago in a completely different milieu that successfully penetrate our being today. Rumi is more than a poet or philosopher, and thankfully is not presented as a prophet. He is a super-bard of the highest order. "Soul Fury" burns with the passion of all passionate friendships. The only friendship that endures is the one based on the strongest of connections at the deepest core of our being: our spiritual center. Highly recommended.

This is a handsomely produced volume which, alas, will be of limited practical usefulness for the home gardener, or even for the reasonably informed succulent enthusiast.The jacket states that it contains "detailed descriptions of more than 2000 plants" and "more than 750 photographs", which is one of the main problems: more than half of the species mentioned are not illustrated, and since those mentions are usually unaccompanied by more detailed information they're not very helpful in identifying particular species. And while it's interesting to see many of these plants photographed in their natural habitat, the small size and often cluttered nature of the photographs makes identifying particular species difficult - to say nothing of the fact that many of the species photographed in situ are ones that the average succulent enthusiast are unlikely to encounter at a nursery or botanic garden.What practical information there is is overwhelmingly directed at the Californian gardener (which comes as no surprise since the author is based in the Bay Area) and will be of very limited usefulness for those living elsewhere.Overall, the book feels too specific in some areas (taxonomies, geographic descriptions) and not specific enough in others (practical knowledge for home gardeners, particular differences between species), so it's difficult to understand who it's intended for. I consider myself an "advanced amateur" when it comes to succulents, and it wasn't for me.

This book isn't for those who only want to order some cute little succulents and learn how to make crafts they found on Pinterest. This is for people who want to know about the lifecycle of these plants, where they grow (to help with choosing which varieties are wisest to buy and to replicate natural conditions at home), what they look like in the wild, and some basics of cultivation. I'm not sure why some people are complaining about the photos- They look fine to me. I mean, sure, they aren't huge, perfectly back-lit and diffused in-studio, immaculately edited, with an instagram glamour filter slapped on for hipster cred... but they get the job done. I honestly have nothing negative to sat about this book. Maybe if I become an expert in succulent identification and cultivation, I'll find some sort of minutia to nit-pick, but for the time being, I think this book has a specific audience, and those who are interested in the topic should really appreciate the work that went into making this awesome reference tool.

I got this as a gift for a friend who loves, raises, and creates container gardens with succulents. I had no clue what books he already had, but figured he could always return it to Amazon in exchange for a book he'd prefer owning, and was so happy when he told me he'd wanted this book for a long time because it was the best for his field of interest. So that's 5 stars in my book, smiling, and he's had it for about a year now and uses it almost daily for his small, growing business of succulent container gardens!

This is an excellent reference book, especially given that its topic is very far from being a well-defined category. It's quite readable, nicely printed, and seems likely to be durable (for a normal paperback book, that is).However, its aims make it less than satisfactory for someone interested in choosing or identifying succulents for the garden, houseplants, etc. As others have commented, most of the photos are of succulents in habitat. Some of these are spectacular; in others, it's almost impossible to distinguish the plant under discussion from other vegetation, rocks, etc. Generally, they don't help either to identify an unknown succulent or to picture how it might appear if you grew it. Furthermore, the selection of plants covered is clearly slanted toward the rare, hard-to-access, or distinctive. This allows for very little coverage (much less photos) of the proliferation of hybrids and visually distinctive cultivars produced by nurseries and sold for the garden or as houseplants.So, I'm glad I bought the book: it is cool to know about where these plants come from & get an idea of what they look like in their native habitat. The author describes some of the more extreme places where commonly-grown as well as unheard-of plants come from vividly, making the book an armchair voyage to some of the planet's most inhospitable terrain. Socotra sounds horrible, but I was fascinated to read about it.But I wish someone would write an equally authoritative reference work on succulents in the garden. (And leave out the categories that have no place in a landscape & are unlikely to be grown successfully by someone without a greenhouse, etc. - living stones are cool, I personally find "root succulents" repulsive, neither is a landscape plant.) No-one could keep up with the proliferation of wild & crazy hybrid Echeveria, sedums, etc., never mind all the cross-generic hybrids, not to mention the radically different appearance of genetically identical plants under different cultural conditions (with / without rain, etc.).But I'd really like to have a book that covered the top 10 most common Aeonium species / established varieties in cultivation, with clear pictures of each one - and the equivalent for the main species & standard hybrids of the other prominent succulent genera used in the garden. I don't want to buy multiple volumes per genus - I'm not planning to open a nursery - and there are already *plenty* of books on landscaping with succulents, choosing and arranging succulents for containers, crafting with succulents, etc. Meanwhile, I'm still not sure what species several of the aeoniums I'm growing are, even though I'm a plant person (and a Latinist), and I've been obsessively propagating & slightly less obsessively researching these things for a year.So, buy this book by all means. It's very cool, and the author is both a top expert and a lively writer. But don't expect it to answer all or even most of your questions about succulents you encounter in gardens, nurseries, etc.

This book contains some great reading of Mr. Dortort's travel adventures, where he seeks the rare succulent for his botanical gardens. Kind of an Indiana Jones of the Weird Plant World. I really want to go to South Africa now and see some of these amazing plants in situ. The book is vast and comprehensive, with many pictures of the plants in their native habitats. I particularly value this because it makes it clear how the plants normally live and how we can help them adapt to our world. I will be reading this from cover to cover several times at least, and referring to it often. Lots of good advice on caring for these fascinating plants, also. He even includes a number of geni that are not usually covered in "arid plant" books, like Bursera and Boswellia (copal and frankincense trees). Great stuff!

If you are buying this, I'm willing to bet that you're a BU engineering student taking the EK125. The book ok, not that hard to read, but without the MATLAB program open, it's really confusing.

if you are looking for a good overview of MATLAB, this book is a good choice IMHO. Mathworks has released the home edition of Matlab at a very reasonable price. If you are a midnight engineer, and on a strict budget, Octave or Scilab are good alternatives and, for the most part, can be used with the text. That said, I haven't tested the examples in the latest edition (5th) in Octave or Scilab (I did with an earlier edition and had to make adjustments in some cases like movies), so, your mileage may vary. The text is written in very easy to follow steps. The issue I have (primarily with the Kindle edition) is that the examples do not have the correct spacing. This is a minor issue as if you are following along and trying the examples, it is clear what the author is pointing out. So, there are plenty of books on Matlab. This is one of the more gentle introductions with trivial to moderatly difficult exercises.

What a fun cookbook! It contains information on what low tea, high tea and tea parties are along with a few recipes for each type of tea get together. The illustrations are great and you can color them in. No, there aren't a zillion recipes or even especially different ones. This isn't that type of cookbook. This is a cookbook for Alice in Wonderland lovers. It is made for fun, (the recipes included were easy ones that are very good). I love it! I think this would be an awesome gift for young Alice in Wonderland fans. It gives recipes they would be able to follow to have their own teas. I am very happy with my book. I would recommend getting the paper version. It feels incredibly soft. Everyone I have shown it to has fallen in love with it. It is a treasure!

Plus, Adam envied Thomas' stable home life, a mother committed to social justice and a father who values his intelligence.Their friendship was fairly intense until high school, when Adam began focusing on sports, girls, and parties, and Thomas continued down his own path. Yet partly out of obligation and partly out of nostalgia, the boys still got together briefly, and their encounters became focused more on mischief and pranks. One night, one of their schemes goes dangerously out of control, and the aftereffects cause their friendship to end. And while Adam can move beyond the incident, it affects Thomas far more intensely.Fast forward 10 years, and Adam's life isn't quite going in the direction he had hoped. Ben Dolnick's At the Bottom of Everything is a book about finding yourself in the midst of trying to help someone else, and how much our lives can turn on just one single incident.I really enjoyed the beginning of this book as Adam reflected on both his current situation and reminisced about his friendship with Thomas, but I felt as if once he went to India, the book lost its focus. A great deal of time was spent on spiritual issues, as Thomas had sought the guidance of a guru in India, but it almost seemed like a wholly separate story than what the book initially was about. I thought Thomas in particular was a fascinating and heartbreaking character, and the way Dolnick illustrated Thomas' mental state, and how it affected both of his parents, was tremendously well done.What I've liked about Dolnick's earlier books is his ability to capture everyday situations and "regular" people, and make you care about them. He does that in At the Bottom of Everything, although the book loses its way just as its narrator is trying to find his.

Downloaded a sample to my Kindle only because it was recommended based on other books I have read.For some reason I was hooked from the beginning without even knowing what was going on. Often I approach books like I do movies...I'll read some reviews or the book jacket, research the author a bit, and generally go into the book with some background knowledge.With this book I had none of that, and I was very surprised by how hooked I was from the beginning. Even though nothing happens for a while. It might have been the parallel stories that, while both from the protagonist's point of view are seemingly unrelated, and without giving too much away, eventually converge.I think what really kept me reading, however, was Dolnick's ability to capture in words the tragedy of best friends growing apart. We've all been there, and whether it's friendship, romance, or relationships with family members, the gradual drifting apart is sometimes more tragic than any heated encounters or tense periods. This book, for me, captured that feeling perfectly.Now that I've finished this book, I'll be moving on to Dolnick's two earlier books and see if the magic was there from the beginning!

It's like a conversation with an incredibly intelligent, funny, self-effacing friend who has made a terrible mistake and is hacking his way through layers of regret -- not with a glib sense of well-I've-learned-my lesson, but with the humbling, startling awareness that this thing we call living, the day-to-day sense of being mostly okay, is only a sliver of experience. I would follow Ben Dolnick anywhere, engrossed by layer upon layer of insight, wit, and kindness. I nearly missed my subway stop and had to force myself to put the book down after my lunch break. I didn't want it to end. This book is a gem. A rare find.

I really liked the first part of this novel that expertly portrays the relationship between the 2 main characters. There was a very realistic insight to the friendship that occurred between the two young men. The author also injected humor well. I felt the second part of the novel wasn't as relatable. The focus shifted from a straightforward andGrounded approach to one that was spiritual and introspective. I missed the continuity that the first part of the novel presented.

This is Dolnick's best novel and it is truly captivating. His writing offers not only the wonderful descriptive color that is one of his hallmarks, it engages on many levels. The two main characters develop very interestingly and in response to a shared event that was at first unspeakable but later dominates.The moral and ethical dilemmas knitted into the plot are provocative to contemplate.

Two boys whose lives would probably have been very predictable if not for one unfortunate event when they were only 15.The resulting paths they took reveal to us a journey that is deep, unusual and enlightening to both the reader and the boys.Well constructed and superbly written. A book I could recommend to anyone, even a 15 year old boy.

Ok book. Not one of my favorites but there were parts I enjoyed. Dragged on a bit and felt ending was weak.

I read this pile of garbage from cover to cover. Mandatory reading for a promotion exam. The single most racist book I have laid my eyes upon. The suggestion that there should be 3 police departments (black, white, collegiate). The suggestion that civil service exams be watered down to meet the education level of minorities in our society so that they can be police officers. Nothing in here discusses equality and diversity. The best part is that it the author only discusses theory, no practical application. The author does not outline how to achive the goals of community policing. It almost seems like some magical circumstances occur and BAM we have a utopian police department. The best part is that the author spends quite a bit of time talking about how great he is and how he is the greatest pioneer in policing. He speaks about how he was the chief in multiple departments, mayor of Huston, worked for slick willie Clinton. Etc etc etc. All of theses woo hoo things. Who cares! So if you have to study for a test, don't bother. It wont help. This text is the most repetitive thing on the shelf, no amount of memorization will help (short of an idetic memory). Take my advice, get a book on study techniques, strategies and test question structure. You will have a much better shot.

Looking over the reviews on this book I have to agree with the negative reviews. This text was over 500 pages long and I firmly believe that the core ideas and principles of this book could have been easily conveyed in about 200-250 pages. Clearly, the author was very impressed with himself. Dr. Brown lays claim to being the father of Community Policing he also mentioned that he introduced the concept of Community Policing to the people of South Africa. I was unable to substantiate either of these claims. In the preface, the author states that he received his Ph.D. in 1970 and that this book is based on his 30 years in law enforcement. Perhaps a better name for this text would be "Community Policing in the 20th Century"? The author rambles on about concepts and topics he makes reference to video tape and other dated media formats He would drone on about new programs, processes, changes, and cutting edge methods that he implemented in different government entities that he lead. In the next paragraph he would state that after he left office the involved entity reverted back to the way things were before Dr. Brown's arrival. I would never tell anyone that this was a "great read" or suggest that they select it as optional reading to learn about community policing. I can not help but think that there has got to be a more current and better written text about community policing.

This could have been half as long if it weren't for the author rambling on about himself and repeating himself over and over. He proclaimed himself to be the "father of community policing" when most accounts of community policing never mention him. However, Joseph D. McNamara was given that title. He places himself on the same level as true historical contributors and pioneers in policing such as August Vollmer, J. Edgar Hoover, and Herman Goldstein. He uses the word "I" very frequently as if he is responsible for greatness when in fact, simple research into the organizations he claimed to have made great strides in no longer use any of the program's he initiated save one or two. This much self-bragging really encourages me to question the claims this author makes about himself.The content of the book is good once you get past the self-centered display of his PhD. However, none of the concepts are original to the author and at the same time he was initiating the program's he spoke about, so we're many other departments in the country.I recommend reading true works by true academics and practitioners who have produced true research data and made true strides in the improvement of policing.

Wow. First, this book rambles on for over 500 pages. The author is clearly enamored with himself and makes outlandish claims as if he invented the question mark. Besides rambling on for a dry, repetitive 500 pages the book is FULL of spelling and grammatical errors that most middle school children could point out. The author continually refers to "comstat" and I assume he is referring to CompStat which was created in NYC where the author served as Police Commissioner (it's true, he tells you like 300 times throughout the book).

Reverse racism, dangerous officer safety practices, general crap. Written by someone who has NEVER done this kind of work. This is just leftist garbage that is completely untenable.

Too many spelling & grammar errors to take seriously. Additionally, the author repeats himself several times throughout the chapters congratulating himself on his accomplishments. I read this as a required reading for a promotional exam. I do not recommend it if you want to read it voluntarily.

Worst book ever written. I doubt it was even edite because here were so many word usage errors and one paragraph just ended in mid-sentence. He contradicts himself several times and even calls his own principles by the wrong name a few times..

This book is ridiculous and redundant. A waste of money. Seems like half the book the author writes about himself and the other half is information he got from the Internet. Also it's very annoying that he refers to himself in the third person everytime he talks about himself, which is about 300 of the 600 pages. Not a fan of this book.
