This is what Amy serves up in this funny, witty, and often gut wrenching memoir.This is no ‘Out of Africa,’ and Amy is no Isak Dinesen. ‘Six years in Mozambique’ is much more. The villages and children and projects often become secondary characters to the principal character of the author’s own internal life, her successes and failings, triumphs and fears. It is sometimes painfully honest, as this extraordinary person fights to remain faithful to herself and her adopted community, often while being betrayed by those who are closest.It is more than anything an inner life memoir, and a rare, unblinking look at why things do and do not happen in life from the perspective of the emotional subtext, the spring from which the rest of life often flows.

Interesting story with good insight into Mozambique. Although the author did a lot of good work, she is not a particularly likeable character, and comes off as a bit kooky sometimes. She is very religious yet has a long term affair with a married man, yet never really fully addresses that in the book and seems to have no remorse whatsoever. The writing is not well organized. She mentions things that seem like they are going to lead somewhere, but they never do. I read it with the intent to learn more about Mozambique and it fulfilled that goal.

While I found this book a little disjointed it does give a fascinating account of what is possible by ordinary folk that are driven, in this case by a divine calling, to make a difference. The pressing issues in Africa such as corruption, over population, extortion, and the general desire by regimes to keep their electorates uneducated are largely overlooked, and leaves the reader questioning just where Africa might be in 30 years time if aid efforts continue to be directed at the softer symptomatic issues, rather than consolidating effort to eradicate the problems that ultimately result in the general suffering of the people, flora and fauna of Africa.

Bravo to this talented author! Six Years in Mozambique outlines the reality of Amy Gillespie’s journey to help the children of Africa. Start to finish is guided by a spiritual faith with an unknown end. She trusted her intuition and unspoken messages from God, and along the way, she displayed very noble actions to help many people. Amy's modest demeanor proves that she is humbled by the experiences she encountered and I wonder if she acknowledges the magnitude of her accomplishments. Great job Amy, not only with the book, but with all that you did to fulfill this chapter of your life. Be well.

This book is very well written and easy to read. I am not very patient reading thick books and yet I could not put down this great book. Story of Amy despite all difficulties in her life, not allowing those events, to define her or to break her spirit. She reached out to make a difference in lives of children in Africa, thousands of miles away. It is a very inspiring, thought provoking, spiritual and emotional reading. Most likely, it will take you to places you have not been before. It is story of faith, hard work and determination. Its is about making a positive difference in this world despite our difficult experiences or lack of resources. Job well done Amy!

I so enjoyed reading "Six Years in Mozambique:Things I Haven't Told Mom" . Amy's honesty and Midwest sensibilities made the book accessible to all types of readers. I especially enjoyed the trials, tribulations, and victories she experienced in Mozambique. To go to a country so different from the U.S. took great courage and faith that her efforts would bear fruit. I felt her emotions as if I were there with her,and that is hard to do in a nonfiction book. I teach English, and I am going to "strongly" encourage my seniors to read this book to expand their views of the world and their role in it. Great job Amy!

Amy, the author who is from a small town in Minnesota, writes this book and the story is dramtic, and shows what God can do with anyone who listens to His call. She tells of what brought her to Mozambique and all the frustrations, trials and tribulations that she encounters while trying to seek to do good. Amy comes to know the reason God not only put her in the lives of family and friends, but why God put her on this earth. I loved this book as much as I love Amy, and I for one am filled with joy that God put her in my life and the inspiration she gives to me and others.

I just finished reading Dan Walsh's book, "The Deepest Waters." I bought it a long time ago but hadn't gotten to read it. I started it yesterday -- got to a place that I just was too upset/emotionally into it and had to stop reading. But I finished some things this morning, picked it up again and couldn't put it down until I just now finished it. It was so good! And I've cried sad tears, and happy tears, and angry tears, and relieved tears -- and I'm just wiped out with crying! But it was excellent -- and then to find out that the basic facts of the story were actually true, including the crazy bird!!! Wow! As always, Dan Walsh's characters are so real that you feel you've always known them, and the conversations flow so naturally and are never stiff. So, all that to say I really enjoyed it, and if you haven't read it, you should. 😁

THE DEEPEST WATERS by Dan Walsh deeply affected me. What if the last thing you said to your spouse was the last thing you ever said? Or vice versa. It impelled me to run out to my husband's work truck this morning in my bare feet and jammies and kiss him goodbye. This book was a knuckle-biter until the last page.Laura and John Foster met in the mid 1800's, transplants to San Francisco. He was her knight in shining armor, taking immediate interest in her, sweeping her off her feet. I loved how devoted he was to her, when others had overlooked the qualities she offered. The story of their meeting and subsequent marriage and honeymoon plans are told as flashbacks set amidst the wreckage of their hurricane-tossed ship. John dashes off a hurried note, telling her to read it only if she thinks he has slipped into a watery grave. Then he watches as her lifeboat heads off to another small ship, also besieged by the slashing winds of the hurricane.John must keep afloat without losing his moral high ground. Where others were drowning in defeat, he offered life-saving items to buoy the others up as they struggled to survive in the tossing waves.Laura sees only the wreckage of her life drifting about her as she climbs aboard the life-saving ship. But a dirt-poor, lash-scarred slave helps her to see that there is something to be happy about even in her darkest hours. He and his dog, Crabby, provide the strength she can't seem to dredge up, as well as saving her life and accepting the same from her. (I loved that dog. He's a lot like my own. Although I don't know if my dog would do the whole crab thing.)Laura must decide what to do to pick up the shattered bits of her life and move on. Luckily, because she championed the slave and his dog, and worked to help people on board, and various other reasons, Laura had a wealth of friends to aid her. But the specter of her dead husband lurked just under the surface of her smile. What's a poor shipwreck survivor to do?This book kept me reading with it's interesting plot, believable characters, Christian themes, and suspense. There was no bad language and no sex, two things that often make me ditch a book. I hate having to try and read around both of those.THE DEEPEST WATERS really pulled my anchor. Thank you, Dan Walsh, for a finely crafted tale.

I am so glad Dan Walsh was able to do a rerelease of this story. I have read many of his stories but missed this one. He is a wonderful storyteller who is able write about people in various time periods, each one so unique. This one I would call a suspenseful love story wrapped in historical fiction. At the end, the author explains what the factual parts are. I heartily agree with Mr. Walsh, save reading that until the end. This is a stand alone story taking place in the mid 1800s. It is a story of love and hate, freedom and slavery, belief and unbelief. It is about humankind in all our strengths and weakness, the good and the evil in the world and looking for and finding the good even in the midst of hardship and sorrow. Happy reading!

I like the way Dan Walsh weaves the story lines in his books. His characters are so real that I immerse myself totally into the story, feeling their pain, their fear, and their joy. The intrigue is so magnetic that it is almost impossible to put this book down. When the last page has been read, I am bereft since I am no longer involved in the lives of these so very real characters.

Aloha!The problem with this series has always been that author Plakcy lulls you into the everyday life of Hawaii cop turned detective Kimo Kanapa'aka while giving you enough of a rope to wrap around your neck in terms of a new mystery to solve. That's where he gets you--simultaneously unwrapping Kimo's latest love life escapade--now with his should-be husband Mike (the Firefighter) Riccardi and their children--around something truly horrifying snorkeling around the islands.This one ratchets up both aspects of Kimo's life (narrated by him) in such a way that it's like a fuse has been lit on at both ends. His relationship with Mike is not front and center here, but rather it's one that features their twins (and their mother), foster son, his and Mike's parents, and a small group of friends and colleagues that form a unique nuclear family.That his chief sidekick here is his detective partner Ray Donne, both now on special assignment with the FBI, brings in more of a close-knit feel to a mystery which unravels in increasingly horrifying ways that take very unexpected turns.That the mystery is solved and the chase which begins in earnest eventually winds up with a satisfying but not exceptionally defined end to this series is a testimony to Plakcy's ability to keep you guessing until the very end.

While any new book from Neil is an automatic addition to my Kindle Wishlist (especially anything new in Mahu), I'm disappointed that editing didn't catch the fact that Kimo and Mike babysit Alpha & Omega in the early part of the book but the latter part of the book has the twins yet unborn (chapter 32 for example). Is the reader supposed to forget Mike's mom helping Kimo soothe their daughter while Mike's dad teaches him proper diapering of baby boy tricks? Maybe I dreamed chapter 6?Otherwise, I enjoyed another riveting investigation and spending time with Kimo and his world. I will continue to read further books in this (and other) series and look forward to Neil's next release. I only hope the editing is better...

This book gives the impression that the first half was written by one of Mr. Plakcy's creative writing students and the last half by a different student without any coordination between them. The twins birth early in the book and then later unbirth in the later chapters is the most obvious. On page 131 a client receives a letter "with no stamp or postmark" which on page 136 "it had gone through the mail". At least this book didn't read like it was written by a foreign ghost writer with English as a second language like one gay fiction writer I won't name.

I am a big fan of this series and thoroughly enjoy the cast of recurring characters, as well as the evolution and maturing of Kimo. This book in the series has a very compelling theme (racial intolerance and religious fanaticism), and an engrossing plot line. I didn't find the discrepancies others did related to the new twins (and I had read the reviews in advance so was on the lookout). I think my only complaints are the following: a too quick almost anticlamactic wrap-up of the main mystery (after a long build up); not all loose ends were tied up (what happened to the two German Shapherds, mentioned multiple times?); and the repeated use of the word "cheesy" as a descriptor of the theme park seemed disrespectful (and not consistent with Kimo's usual respect of cultures). All that aside, the author continues to capture Hawaii and Hawaiian culture well, and his main protagonists are excellent role models and interesting characters. I look forward to the next entry in the series. PS: why hasn't Hollywood picked up on this yet?

I really am a fan of Plakcy"s Mahu series. Best to start at the beginning because the characters are developed during the series. I've read other books by the author but like these characters the best. Not overly exciting but reads smoothly, characters likable, and interesting areas of Hawaii mentioned. Worth the time. Go to fantasticfiction.co.uk and under mysteries type in the authors name or one of his books to get the list of series order. Enjoy!

A very sloppy effort. I'm a fan of the Kimo series, I enjoy the Hawaiian backdrop, the relationships between Kimo and his family and teh plot lines, but this one is a dud. First and foremost teh author injects children into Kimo and Mike's relationship. Problem is you don't know if the kids have been born - assuming so when the guys have to take care of them - or are the kids still in the womb, as evidenced by several references in the last half of the book to the "unborn twins" and the "pregnant mother". The plot line of religious zealotry starts off on a reasonable premise but quickly slips into a contrived story line and ending. The whole thing is sloppy, confusing and frankly not worth the effort. If Mr. Placky can't do better than this after some many successful Kimo novels, then its time to pack it in and let the series expire.

Love this series and its characters. Never tire of the author's work. Each time I see that the author has published a new installment in the series I buy it.

Love Kimo and his ohana. I so relate to Kimo being a surfer in alohaland. Hope there's more stories to come.

I like Jodi Picoult as a general rule, but sometimes the conflicts in her books are a bit contrived. This book about a dead newborn found on an Amish farm was a novel idea, combining the social issues perspective that Picoult specializes in, with the fictionalized accounts of Amish lives that are popular now. It was a great read most of the way through and I enjoyed it very much, until the end. The author seems to have started this tale with no end in mind and was grabbing at straws to conclude the story. This was especially annoying as I was propelled through the book by my interest in finding out if the baby was murdered or died of natural causes, and who murdered the baby if it was murder. The end simply did not ring true to the story. The ending put forth did not agree with many of the details that came before, and did not really make sense. This was sad, as it was a great story up until this point, and it deserved an ending that fit.

As a Jodi Picoult fan, I enjoyed reading Plain Truth and found the writing style, once more, to be highly masterful. The theme of this novel has to do with protecting someone, and its concern is specifically on mothers and children. The plot hovers around several mothers, although one of its main characters is Elly, the lawyer who has longed for a child for a long time.Katie Fisher, an Amish teenager has a baby out of wedlock, a fact too difficult for her to handle, as she doesn’t admit her situation until she goes into labor and bears a premature baby. When the baby is found dead in the barn, Katie is charged with murder, and Ellie Hathaway, the hotshot lawyer with boyfriend issues who is on a visit to her aunt in the area, accepts to defend her. The court case is highly complicated and Ellie’s defense of Katie, as to finding evidence, takes many forms and faces complications, until the plot presents a surprise twist at its end.The story is intricate and, despite its calm Amish town setting, full of tension and suspense, as its author reveals the story in tiny pieces, with every twist and turn undoing a revelation or taking it to a new direction. Any summary, therefore, cannot do justice to this multi-dimensional work full of mystery and rich, dramatic characterization.Some of this excellence comes from the point of view shifts, as each chapter provides a different first person or limited third person point of view by each important character, with several chapters using the omniscient POV. Through this change in POVs, the readers get to know the characters inside out.

This was another book recommended to me by a friend as something I might enjoy reading while on holidays. Ally, my girlfriend, has been telling me for a while that Picoult is a terrific author and if Plain Truth is anything to go by, Alison is right.This is well-crafted tale, gripping and moving, set mainly in the Pennsylvannia, in the Amish community of Paradise, where, one morning, a dead baby is found in a barn. No-one knows how it came to be there and no-one lays claim to the babe. Police are called in and quickly identify not only the young mother, but the shocking possibility the infant was murdered.In another part of the country, lawyer, Ellie Hathaway, is confused about her relationship and her professional life. As a defense attorney, she’s often called upon to defend the indefensible and, when her last very high-profile case finishes, she needs time out to recoup and rethink all aspects of her life. She feels like her ethics, sense of self and what she wants from life have been compromised. She escapes to her Aunt’s house near Paradise and finds herself drawn into the case surrounding the murder of the baby.Working pro-bono, she reluctantly becomes more involved than she ever intended when she takes responsibility for the suspected murderer, a young Amish woman, Katie Fisher, who is unmarried and maintains, despite all evidence to the contrary, that she never had a baby. Confounded by this teen, as well as by the Amish way of life, which stresses others over the self and work over leisure, she calls in an old friend to help – what she doesn’t yet understand is that the young Amish woman isn’t the only one needing aid.This book like so many good ones, draws upon a range of genres to tell its tale. I mistakenly thought it was going to be a crime novel and, while a crime does take place, and a portion is reserved for the fascinating unfolding of the case in the courtroom, it isn’t only these things, but so much more. It’s about human relationships, family, the bonds that unite and tear us apart. It’s about choices, love, loss, about humility, community and faith. It’s about the way the modern world makes us selfish and afraid, but also how denial can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s also a novel about generational difference and the power of female friendship and trust.At the centre of the story are two women – both strong and remarkable but for the moment, lost. The question is, will they let themselves be found?Looking for a wonderful tale to lose yourself in? This might be it.Thanks Ally!

For some reason I view reading Jodi Picoult's books as a "guilty pleasure". I mean, I don't have to work that hard to read them - they are written simply and are easy to understand - so perhaps that is why I tend to underrate them.But this is a really good book. The story of a young unmarried Amish woman who gets pregnant and then is accused of murdering the infant so that she is not shunned from the Amish community and the attorney who is representing her; a 39 year old unmarried woman who wants nothing more than to have a baby.Although somewhat predictable, the story is well told and the details of life among the Amish people was really fascinating.This is the fourth or fifth book by Jodi Picoult that I have read and I think was my favorite (although I thought Nineteen Minutes was really good as well).This was a fast and easy read and I would recommend it to readers who are not looking for that Pulitzer Prize winning experience.

Fabulous running training book, or just to keep track of what you've done for the year. I'm so please because I bought mine used and it looks brand new. I cannot wait until 1 year has gone by so I can look at what I've chronicled. This is an accomplishment for me as I am into weight training but always afraid of any distance running because of arthritis in both knees adding patella femoral syndrome in right knee. Thing is, most people with arthritis don't know that weight bearing exercises actually "strengthen" your knees/joints. If I go too many days without exercise, especially running, that's when I feel the cracking and mild stiffness. But the working out and running just oils my joints up... "LITERALLY"GREAT BOOK TO BUY!

This is the perfect journal for training and running. In 2012 I used the older version to track all of my training up to the Chicago Marathon and it was great for logging total miles/weekly miles and all my races. It is a 52 week journal and you fill in the dates. You open the book, lay it flat and each week spans the two pages. There are nice motivational quotes and tips.I do use an online training tracker with my Garmin, but this allows you to have an accessable tool for planning your weeks and miles . It was particularly useful for me with my desk calendar tracking the 16 week Hal Hogden preparation for a marathon. Recording aches and pains those weeks with over 50 miles is nice to review so you can get a handle on what works best with your body recovery planning after big races.Overall, it is a handy tool and it is pretty cool seeing the miles add up when you get to December.

I get this for a runner friend of mine every year for Christmas. I tried a different book two years ago and she liked this one better. The pages are more paper than glossy and does not smudge when she writes in it.

There is something about the old school logs with pages that appear to have been cranked out on a typewriter; it is a link to a time when running shoes were built for wrestling mats, five bucks was the "outrageous" race day entry fee and a school's indoor track was located in the basement boiler room and looked like a failed art project to paint a perfect circle on the cement floor.This version of the magazine's training journal has an old school link through a brief introduction by 1968 Boston Marathon winner, journalist, author and editor Amby Burfoot, but the pages are splashed with vibrant colors, with a full - undated - year available for musings. There are other sections for specific jottings on racing, shoe purchases and those training runs/races that should be bottled for future use. The tips on a variety topics are informative and can be sources of inspiration when climbing out of those stagnant ruts.Runner's World has a winner with the layout....for the long run.

I'm currently using a second RW log because I like it so much. Previously I used a log by Bob Glover and then some other kind but the RW training journal is definitely better than others.I read RW both online and in a paper magazine format and I always enjoy it and having this journal/ log is a little like reading the RW every day - there are lots of useful tips and advice on every page. There are also pages devoted to our own race info, info on shoes we're going to use throughout a given year and there's also some space for 'rave runs' and that's something every runner does experience now and then.A huge upside for me is also how colorful this log is - it's quite energizing to flip through it, jot down some information about running and get some daily inspiration from the pictures of fit people and great runners' quotes.I would love more space for every day entries but it's just a minor downside. I've just ordered two more copies of the journal, so I'm def. going to use it in the near future.

Great journal, plenty of space to record what run/exercise I did. I like that it does not come pre populated with dates so I can add my own. I like to not only record my runs but other work out routines I do at the gym. Has a great are to record race results, shoes you purchases, and lots of tips throughout the book.

When training for half marathons (and my once finished full marathon), I have always written down my training somewhere. In my calendar, on regular paper, etc.I found this Runner's World journal to be quite good for keeping the week to week runs and cross training information in one place. There is a section to write goals and then fill in for each day what you completed. There is also a section blank for each week- I chose to use it for making a check off list for runs needing to be completed that week, and then getting the satisfaction of checking them off as I was done.I also enjoyed the running quotes throughout the journal. I typically have used only one journal for tracking training for up to three halfs, depending on what sort of regimen you use for training- I typically do about 3-4 months prior to race day.
