Search is a guide, a handbook, for the pastoral search process. It is not a comprehensive treatment. Having never done one (but with one on the horizon), would guess that most searches are unique enough that any attempt at comprehensiveness would be folly.I imagine that most searches (read: small churches) would benefit greatly from this book merely because it points out so many nuances and reality checks in the search process. Likewise, the deliberate intentional search structure offered in the book will be invaluable to this group as they are those least likely to be in a position to hire professional assistance.While it does not impact the 5 star rating, I have to be honest and say I was disappointed with the editing. For example, there are a couple of instances where virtually identical paragraphs appear within a page or two of each other.

This is an excellent resource for church leaders embarking on the pastoral search process. As one would expect for a handbook, Search includes very practical steps and tips to a successful pastor search process. However, the author goes a step further to address the spiritual, emotional, and relational aspects of such an important endeavor. From starting off in prayer, to setting a solid foundation before interviewing candidates, to how to welcome your new pastor and family to the church...this is a very helpful tool.

This is a great book for anyone serving on a search committee for a pastor. Many helpful tips and great advice to guide in a pastoral search. I highly recommend it.

About the Author

In the 1950s, Fulton J. Sheen (1895-1979) was one of the most popular television personalities in America, captivating millions of prime-time viewers weekly with enlightening talks on the essentials of Christianity and the moral life. His cause for canonization for sainthood was opened in 2002. In June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized a decree from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints stating that he lived a life of heroic virtues - a major step towards beatification. Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria in 1919, Sheen quickly became a renowned theologian. He went on to teach theology and philosophy and was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 1951. In 1966 he was made the Bishop of Rochester and later the Archbishop of the Titular See of Newport, Wales. For 20 years he hosted the night-time radio program The Catholic Hour before moving to television and presenting Life Is Worth Living (1951 1957). Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated The Fulton Sheen Program (1961 1968). For this work, Sheen twice won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality.

I'm getting (actually gotten) older, and my eyes aren't as good as they used to be, even with glasses.So I first purchased the physical book, thinking it would be good to carry it with me when out-&-about. But the prince is just too small for these tired old eyes.Yet the Kindle edition's font is very comfortable to read, and can even be maximized or minimized at will!One of our recent Holy Fathers - now Saint John Paul II - consistently encouraged us by saying, "Be Not Afraid". This one little book is all we need as we walk through the dangerous shadows of this Culture of Death, as it seeks to ruin are Eternal Souls.

I bought our first copy of Fulton Sheen's Wartime Prayer Book for my son when he left for USAF Basic Military Training- in 2011. Since then, he regularly sends me requests for additional copies to give to his friends. He just asked me for more, so I went back and looked back at what that brings us to, I buy at least 10 copies a year from various places. The book is sized to fit in fatigue pockets and - while designed for Catholics- is appropriate for any Christian. It contains prayers and passages for various situations our servicemembers face- words when you have no words.I think the fact that an active-duty Airman has felt this book important enough that he has given over 70 copies away to his friends warrants the 5-star rating!

This isn't a book of prayers in the traditional sense. In reality it is just the opposite and that's what makes it so much more useful. The pages of this book are filled with short reading which are designed to help you think about your relationship with the Lord and thoughts to discuss with Him. In doing so it helps you deal with the current situation during your short (in the eyes of God), trouble-filled time on Earth. Life in general is tough and war really is hell. The horrors that it brings can cause many to turn away from the Creator, wrongly blaming Him for allowing the horrors to happen. But the writings of this book help guide you to better understand (as much as humanly possible) why such things as war/tribulations are here on Earth. Maybes think of it as Job's diary, left here to help you through the absolute toughest of times, whether you are a soldier or just feeling embattled...which is pretty much everyone, isn't it?

One of the most spiritual prayer books I've used. Very small and fits into a pocket easily. Originally published during WWII, Cardinal Sheen assembled a unique group of prayers, and I recommend this quality prayer book to all military and military family members. It not only contains spiritual guidance, it contains some of the best psalms and traditional prayers I've ever seen in one book. It soothes a troubled soul.

Every man should have this tiny pocket prayer book especially veterans and service members. Of course anything written by Bishop Sheen is awesome but this is a book you will want to buy and give as gifts. P.S. Ladies will like reading it as well.

Purchased as a gift for my son to take on his deployment. Bishop Sheen's writings are inspirational. This book is small enough to fit in a pocket, so it can be read at any time the reader has an opportunity.

Dyson manages to weave together the stories of the birth of the computer, the beginning of the Institute for Advanced Study and the personalities of some of the leading scientists of the 20th century all in one compelling narrative.The prose is engaging but written for fellow scientists or, at least, the scientifically literate. Because of the fact that Dyson chose to write the book above the level of popular science his book didn't go viral in the way of, say, Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.However, even though I read this book several years ago, I can say I've rarely had the pleasure of reading a finer work since. Highly recommended for a select kind of reader.

I had heard in an interview by the author that the cover of the book had holes in it like the punch card it was depicting. I thought this was pretty cool and worth getting it in paperback for. Turns out that was a previous version or at least not this one. So, I cut out the squares with a pen knife and pasted the attached image onto the first page.1. Download and print the image with the black squares at 100%, full page, dont fit to frame.2. Place paper on top of cover and align with holes. make creases along the edges of the book except along the binding.3. Cut just inside of the three fold lines from step 2.4. Fold the remaining edge along the binding and tape that to the first page.As far as the contents of the book: Still reading. It's light on technical details as others have pointed out but goes into the history and background of how the researchers got to the Institute, some escaping Germany to do so. Overall enjoyable and informative. Some of the details G. Dyson adds are a result of his sleuthing and searching basements and archives for original documents. When coming across those passages I feel close to the source.

I found the story fascinating.I did have one problem, which is that I had a hard time understanding exactly how "random access memory" (the RAM we have in our computers nowadays) worked. The author moved very quickly from Alan Turing's one-dimensional infinitely long paper tape, to two-dimensional, and then three-dimensional forty floor "hotel suites" where memory was addressed. Oh, well. My bad.Still, a wonderfully eloquent, well researched and quite readable work.

This is an excellent introduction to the early years of computers as seen from the vantage point of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton and the fascinating people who worked there during the thirties and WWII. The participation of these figures, and others, in the development of the atom bomb is examined with more than a hint of the crucial issue of the conflict between secrecy and open sharing, between the commercial (e.g., patents) and computers as vehicles for pure research or free public usage. George Dyson is a clear and gifted writer, commands the fields he treats, and has a leg up on the Institute, given that he grew up there with his celebrated father Freeman Dyson. By the way, though, Turing is a background figure in the book, though of course a vital one.

I have read many reviews of this book, and I am disappointed by the lack of vision of some of the readers. Suffice it to say, this book represents much more than meets the eye. It is not a book about Alan Turing, but rather about how Alan Turing's vision of the Turing Machine has ultimately become the entire digital world we think we know today.Dyson integrates the the visions and accomplishments of Turing and those of his peers who pursued these visions with an uncanny foresight. John von Neuman of course was the primary mover/shaker of so much that happened through the 1940's and mid 50'.What Dyson does with this material is to show how the digital and biological universes have become one ... so intermeshed that it is difficult at best to see the boundaries of either.I, personally, have had the fortune of having programmed computers of the late 50s and early 60s (and of course much later), and this truly gives me a perspective on how true some of these visions have become.I will say no more, since dinner is beckoning, but if you seriously want to understand the impact of computers on our world, this is a wonderful place to start.

Eh. Parts are interesting, even compelling, but there are also too many chunks of 10 pages that shouldn't have made the final book. I know it's the current style of these types of non-fiction books, but I don't need to know the history of the land a university sits on from native american times, or someone's family history back 5 generations, unless it is relevant to the subject.

The unique illustrations combined with the basic principles of Koch's original book makes this volume come alive. The basic theory is based upon some research which showed that in most things, 80 % of the work and achievements in the world are done by only 20 % of the people. This basic principle applies to just about every kind of area of life you can think of, and the author emphasizes that a person can achieve much more with less effort by Applying the 80-/20 principle.I have not read the original book but I found this volume explained and illustrated the principles so that it was clear and concise. Whether you have previously read the original book or are seeking a good overview of the 80/20 principle, you may want to check out this volume. The author explains that he was surprised there was a lot of articles about the 80/20 principle but no book on the subject... You bet, who would write a 250 pages book on something that could be explained in 3 minutes?The 80/20 principle itself is amazing indeed, but 95% of the points of this book come from 5% of its words. The same SINGLE idea is explained in 20 different contexts each repeated 20 times.Just read an article or introduction about the 80/20 principle and that's all you need to know really.

Some people have cynically commented that you only need to read 20% of this book, and the rest is all repetition.Those people do not actually understand the fractal nature of the 80/20 principle - how pervasive it is, or the extent to which you really need to immerse yourself in these concepts. Their opinions are worthless.I first read this book in 2003. I got to page 14 and Richard was explaining how 80/20 is closely related to chaos theory. I suddenly had an epiphany - making realizations that weren't even explicitly stated - and realized that inside every 80/20 is another 80/20, and another and another. 80/20 is fractal!Suddenly I looked out the window and saw 80/20 EVERYWHERE - in the trees, in the street, in the carpet in my house, in nearly every column of every spreadsheet in my business. Before I'd barely seen it at all, and even then only in the rear view mirror. After, I saw it everywhere all around me.At the time I was just starting to crack the code on Google AdWords, and I realized 80/20 is the key to pretty much everything in AdWords. And in marketing itself. 80/20 became my secret weapon. It was the backbone of AdWords and I included an 80/20 chapter in my very first ebook, "Definitive Guide to Google AdWords" which eventually became Entrepreneur Press's "Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" which is the world's #1 book on internet advertising. It also inspired my book "80/20 Sales and Marketing."Richard makes a key observation, which is the difference between 80/20 ANALYSIS and 80/20 THINKING. Analysis is backward-looking. 80/20 Thinking is forward looking. When you know, in advance, that whatever you do is going to be 80/20 and nothing you do can change that, you artificially stack the deck to favor early successes. You kill your runts faster. You search for patterns that most people miss, and shortcut months or years of failure.Richard also delves into many subtleties of how 80/20 manifests in business, and how most businesses are losing money every time they sell 20% of their product line. This is a very big deal.I'm now reading this book, 13 years later, AGAIN (not sure how many times I've cracked it) and it's still producing new jewels. Yes, you can read 20% of this book and it could still potentially change your life. But if you understand 80/20, you should read that kind of book 5 times and you can be nearly certain that you'll get 10X your time investment back every single time.When Richard starts getting philosophical near the end about this applying to relationships and whatnot, don't give in to the temptation to think he's over-reaching. He's not. 80/20 is a fundamental axiom of cause and effect, one of the great secret laws of the universe.I've read a LOT of great books but this one tops the list. It's been worth many millions of dollars to me in my career.

Save 80% of your time by reading the title and nothing else. Input to output ratio is nonlinear in most circumstances. There is little value offered by reading this book if you accept the premise of the title.
