Peter Gisolfi, AIA, ASLA, is senior partner of Peter Gisolfi Associates, Architects and Landscape Architects, in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, and New Haven, CT. He is a professor and former chairman of the School of Architecture at The City College of New York, and was previously an adjunct associate professor of architecture at Columbia University. The instructional diagrams are well illustrated, and there are several projects at the back of the book to use the new-learned folds. I like this book because it has a good variety of floral designs that are simplistic but can be elegant with the right paper.

Origami Flowers is an English translation of Hana No Origami. It features a lovely collection of blossoms. Some of them are abstract and stylized and some are very realistic. Like a lot of Japanese books- there are scissors used in some of the models. Mostly they are to create decorative edges that further define a type of flower.The diagrams are traditional style, but this is a good book for beginners. It features a full guide to reading traditional diagrams and each of the models is marked for difficulty level.Beginners will get comfortable fast, folding the simpler models, and building up to the trickier models. A lot of the models use several sheets of paper. The gorgeous rose in the center of the book cover reminds me quite a bit of stained glass roses. It's sculptural and it's one of the simplest models in the book, it gets it's many petaled look by using several sheets of paper. This could become one of my all time favorite models pretty easily.Card makers will enjoy the elegance of several of the flat flowers, and jewelry paper crafters will also see a good use for a lot of these pretty flowers.More practical models include a couple decorated envelopes, and there is a whole section dedicated to "Practical Flowers". I'm wild for practical origami, in fact one of my favorite origami books ever is Practical Origami , so this is one of my favorite sections of the book. Pretty bowls that look like sculptured flowers that are made using paper napkins, decorated chopstick cases and dishes. These are very pretty models that would work very well for entertaining.[I received a complimentary copy of the book to review on my craft blog- Don't Eat the Paste. I received no other compensation, and my review is my honest opinion of the product.]

Diagrams easy to follow, each flower is divided into season, and contains projects like gift envelope, bouquet, flower dish etc. Very fun and great ideas for gifts or cheap party decoration and something for kids to do as school project, just for fun or something to do during rainy days.

It arrived in perfect condition~! which, I'm glad for...bent corners actually drive me nuts.and of course, I love Voltron! the comics are great for anyone who binged the season in one night and are still wanting some more of their fave paladins.also since it's like bonus content? the story lines are a little more chill. it's a relaxing read. nothing that is actually important to the main story line. I like it.

Defender Vol. 2: Pilgrimage by Tim Hedrick, Mitch Iverson, and artists Jung Gwan & Rubine is another great installment of this series. It was such a fun read and I didn't want it to end!

Legendary book to read along with a legendary re re make of a legendary character/franchise. I just hope they do not stop at a cliffhanger for all time.

A great tale with more original species and adventures that I have come to love.

A free copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.The Voltron paladins respond to a distress call and find the Davdabhau, a group of alien settlers being attacked by the Galra on a mining planet. They are a warrior race in search of their ancestral hunting grounds and had been tricked into coming to that planet. The paladins agree to accompany them on the dangerous journey to their hunting grounds, fighting a number of dangerous opponents along the way.I had loved the original Voltron cartoon as a child (lions, not cars!) and the passage of time has really blurred out a lot of my memories of the show. I don't have Netflix, so I haven't seen more than occasional pictures of the new show. Getting a chance to read the comic version was a great introduction and way to see how the characters interact in the new show. The authors write for the Netflix show, so this is definitely in keeping with the new version of the characters. I don't know if this plot line was actually on the show, but it's very straightforward and contained within this volume, so you don't actually need to know too much about the background in order to understand the story.The art splashes are pretty and very well done, with color coding speech bubbles when all of the lions join to form Voltron. It's a neat trick to visually let you know who is speaking and to keep track of the story as it goes along. Some of the situations are likely very new because I really don't remember characters vying to marry Hunk in the children's cartoon, but it does lead to some comic relief and character bonding moments. This was a fun story overall, and one that I enjoyed with my daughter, who had never seen Voltron before.

This story nicely hits a sweet spot of its target audience - grade school kids looking for a bit of mindless adventure and some humor. While definitely not on the same level as e.g., Avatar, it's a fun little romp in space and original storyline not in the series that never takes itself too seriously.Story: When the castle answers a distress call, they find a race of cat-like humanoids fighting desperately against Galran mobs. As the Voltron crew soon discover, the people were betrayed and brought to the Galra by a traitor. They need to find their legendary protection grounds - a treacherous journey that the Voltron lions and castle can help with finding. But the traitor also knows where they are heading....The theme of this book is Hulk - nearly every scene and every moment is about him and his unique talents. From being able to sniff out a special cake in a maze to recognizing that a new alien may not be an adversary and that there are better ways to deal with conflict than with more conflict. A running gag is that the cat people has two sisters who want to marry Hulk because they respect size and strength most in their culture.The first part of the book is the battle to free the cat people and the rest is the journey and dangers to find their sacred grounds. The story is fairly straightforward and younger readers will have no problems following the plot.The illustrations look exactly like the animation. Some of the action sequences may be a bit confusing but otherwise, this is the Voltron that everyone knows and loves. I think younger kids will especially appreciate the action, adventure, and admittedly simplistic storyline. But fans can also appreciate the humor interspersed throughout. 'Voltron Legendary Defender Vol. 2: Pilgrimage' by Tim Hedrick and Mitch Iverson with art by Jung Gwan Yoo and Rubine is about robot fighters that can form an even bigger robot fighter. I'll confess right here that I've never been a big fan of the show, but I enjoyed this well enough.The Voltron team, in their quest to stop Zarkon, find a race of hunters and shaman called the Davdabhau. They protect them from an attack. Then they are charged with escorting them through space to find new hunting grounds. Of course, it can never be that simple, so the crew finds a giant space monster that they have to deal with along with other hazards or space travel. One of the characters, Hunk, has two of the Davdabhau females fighting over him, much to his dismay.The story is a pretty good space opera type story, and the art is so reminiscent of the cartoon that it almost feels like it's lifted from the cels and relabeled with new dialogue (which is not the case as far as I can tell). Folks who are fans of Voltron will probably find a lot to like in this story.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Lion Forge, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I bought this book after hearing Peter Allison on the radio doing a promo of the book. I was enthralled by the interview. Peter Allison spoke with humour & candour telling of life in the jungle, his travels and most importantly, of walking a Puma. I thought "I must have this book" and I was so happy I bought it. Allison documents his travels in a way that is grass-roots, telling of all things that can & do go wrong, the unexpected, the annoying, (especially when you are Un-co and have a knack for getting into a bind). In this book, basically a diary of Allison's adventures & travels through South America, we are introduced to Roy, the orpahaned Puma, being cared for at a sanctaury, by volunteers who come and go. Now it's Allison's turn to "Walk a Puma". The writing is hilarious & at times sad. I'd say it is an Eye Opener. We in the cities have little idea how the rest of the world live and survive. This book is different, in a good way. Read it and just be entertained. I would like to know what has become of Roy since?

Peter Allison is a fun read. I devoured his books on Africa, often laughing out loud at his self-deprecation, humor and the wonderful absurdities he seems to walk into, eyes- wide. How to Walk A Puma is no less interesting but it is about South America which, no slur intended, does not charm me as Africa does. For those who are interested in his travels there (or simply enjoy spending time with a very down to earth nature/animal loving everyman) this book will be a pleasure. As always, I learned a lot. (Like army ants are scary as hell and, what true wanderlust looks and sounds like) I hope Peter keeps writing. He'll probably end up in an old folk's home in Timbucktu and his adventures via a wheelchair will continue to crack me up.

While I hope this is not his last book, as of right now it is. It is hard to read something like this book and not wish you were there as well. For those of us that can't explore our world for what ever reason Peter has given us a little touch of what it is like to be able to see and interact with these extraordinary places. All I can say is that I hope Peter will finally find his jaguar some day.

Peter Allison has a delightful sense of humor, and I had to struggle not to laugh aloud in public a few times when I was reading How to Walk a Puma. It's a fun read between using a puking cat as a pick up line, dodging puma attacks, and surviving earthquakes and crazy drivers, there is a lot to enjoy. At some point I became a bit annoyed at someone having the time to spend a year and a half just doing whatever came to his mind, but that was probably more jealousy on my part than bad writing on his!

Second book of Peter's I've read, very funny writing style, and equally funny circumstances he seems to get himself into. (You think walking a puma is an exaggeration??)Laugh out loud moments, interesting characters, this book has a lot to offer.C'mon Peter, write some more books!

As the third book, I found it interesting still but not as entertaining and funny as the first two. That said, the last few chapters are by far the best as the chapters in the middle do not say much. Overall a decent read.

Wonderful book...has it all; humor, information, drama, human interest

This is a fantastic book for animal and adventure lovers. I would give it six or seven or ten stars if they were available. It is well written, really fun to read with an amazing sense of humor to keep you turning the pages. Peter Allison has another of these books, "Don't Look Behind You" as well and both are fantastic so order them together. You will be absolutely delighted. I promise!

Prof Beard's SPQR is an excellent social history but not a good introduction to Roman History. She assumes that you have a reasonable grasp of the over arching political course of the empire, especially during the some 200 years of the imperial phase "covered" by this book. I say "covered" as so little is described regarding the political development of the empire. She chose to end her treatise during reign of Caracalla, but this is somewhat arbitrary as any details of his tyranny are given only in passing. She could have chosen to end her work during the reign of Alexander Severus, Commodus, or even Marcus Aurelius with no significant additions or omissions, though she does explain and justify her choice.That being said, it's clear that Prof. Beard did not set out to write a political history of Rome, but to focus on the lives of the average people that lived in the era and to tell, as best as she is able, their stories. Part of her intention in so blithely glossing over the doings of the emperors is to highlight how little effect the political realm had on the lives of ordinary people. This she does very well, despite limited written records as compared to the lives of the wealthy. Beard brings to life how ordinary people sustained themselves, what careers they may have pursued, what they may have hoped for and how they lived. I found all this to be very well told and an aspect of Rome too often glossed over in favor of the more flashy tales of intrigue that pervaded imperial roman politics.However, it needs to be said that Prof. Beard's work is a bit inconsistent in its intent and presentation. The first half dealing with the Republican era delves deeply into the political realm. She tries to highlight social aspects as best as she is able, but the poverty of primary records from that era limits what we can reasonably expect to know. Her lens focuses intently on Julius Caesar (as one would expect), the civil wars that followed, and the reign of Augustus. Tiberius and Caligula get passing mention but the remainder of the period "covered" is dominated by the social history, which again is fascinating and well presented, but the shift in focus is a bit jarring.If you are new to the study of Roman History, I would not recommend this book as its approach to the chronology is too haphazard to do anything other than confuse the neophyte. If, on the other-hand, you have a general sense of the historical narrative and are looking to flesh out your understanding and understand how Romans outside the imperial bubble lived, then you will be very well served by Prof. Beard's work.

I will admit that this wasn't an easy read for me. Although I have a deep interest in learning about the Romans, I found myself lost for the first half of the book. I started it over again after reading the first 100 pages, and this helped me some. Still, I felt that a dearth of knowledge hindered me from getting all that I could out of the book. So here's what I did get from it. First, archaeological finds don't automatically tell the whole story. There's actually quite a bit of thought that goes into telling a story the way it is thought to have happened. I do mean "thought to have happened" because there really isn't any way to know for sure, especially when looking back at something that took place over 2,000 years ago. Even when the evidence is strong, questions always remain. Secondly, the ancient world was full of brutality, uncertainty, and hardship. I'm not just talking about the murder of Julius Caesar, which was so brutal that it is still jolting to this modern reader. I'm also referring to other deaths that occurred by decapitation, crucifixion, poisoning, and one specific tale about a suicidal fellow who cut open his own stomach and pulled out his internal organs. After Rome was claimed by the emperors, there was always an uneasy alliance between the emperor and the senators. Although much of the blueprint for how emperors would rule was established by Augustus, this is one area that was still a question mark, and would remain so. While the author spends a great deal of time on the rich, she also tries to go beyond and give readers a look at the daily lives of the Roman masses. There are sections of the book that describe the jobs they performed, the housing they occupied, and how they spent their leisure hours. Unfortunately, the examples are few, simply because there isn't much recorded information available about the average Roman citizen. Thirdly, I learned that the same things that drive the world today are the things that drove the men of antiquity. The lust for power and the desire for riches hasn't changed over the millennia. Roman vices are our vices, but their virtues are ours as well. On a final note, even though this book is highly rated by critics, as a potential reader I wouldn't start with it until I had a solid background on the history of Rome, or essentially until I knew some facts. Armed with facts, this book becomes a much more enjoyable read, and readers will certainly get more out of it.

This book stays pretty much to the facts and doesn't veer off to details that don't move the book along. In fact, it's length is a very positive part of the book. It is a little boring and does not encourage you to pick it up and read more. Still the book is a good source of historical fact .

I'm not just a romance reader! I love history and I really enjoyed this book. I looked up the Barbary pirates online and found a timetable to follow. The book went into more detail that I found very interesting. The United States had barely won their independence from England, when their sailing vessels, trading in the Mediterranean Sea were attacked by pirates from Tunisia, Morocco, & Tripoli (Libya,) The ships and crew members were seized and the men were forced into hard labor. The pirates asked for ransoms to be paid. After he became president, Thomas Jefferson, did not want to pay ransom. He was able to convince congress to build armed Navy ships to protect the trading vessels in the Mediterranean countries. There were two wars and America proved to Europe that they could defend themselves against the pirates and again after they won the battle against Great Britain during the war of 1812. It was after that war that they finally defeated the pirates for good.

This is a summary and analysis of the Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger book, Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates: The Forgotten War That Changed American History. This conflict, one of America's first as a fledgling independent nation, has been called America's first war on terror. Barbary pirates had taken to capturing sea vessels, disrupting trade, and enslaving seafarers and demanding a peace price to leave those ships alone (for ever decreasing periods of time at ever increasing prices) and ransom (at ever increasing prices) for the sailors. Europe's developed nations paid them off, but Jefferson knew that could not stand. After winning support at home, he built up a small but effective navy, and through it won a victory that established America's reputation as a strong nation able to defend itself and its interests abroad.The main points discussed are:1. The war with Tripoli, while often overlooked, was important in establishing America's reputation as a nation able to defend itself. This was especially critical so soon after the revolution as it warned European powers not to try to try to take over the states and turn them back into colonies.2. The pirates captured us ships and sailors, mistreating and sometimes killing them, for both ransom and for religious leaders. The US sailors were primarily Christian. The pirates were primarily Muslim. The two groups have a long history of animosity.3. Pirates disrupted and sometimes completely halted trade in the area, trade that was critical for the US to repay its revolutionary war debts and build its own economy. Some nations paid for safe passage, for as long as the pirates chose to grant it, but the US would not be able, nor willing, to keep that up for long.4. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson disagreed on how to handle the pirates. Adams argues for peace. Jefferson for war. The points both made are fairly well laid out in this excerpt.5. The naval fleet, while small, was effective largely due to good leadership. This book does not spend much time on clashes or tactics, it being a small summary, but it does cover some of the more important leaders involved, such as Edward Preble.6. This conflict, over sea and over land via Egypt, served as a proving ground for the US. Again, specific battles are not detailed, but the efforts of William Eaton are discussed at length. He was a very interesting figure, and I plan to read more about him in particular.7. Data was kept carefully classified until ready to be acted upon. Actions against a captured US vessel or to install a new Tripoli leader were kept secret for many reasons. The excerpt author notes that "the incident has not made the pages of many history books, landing the plan in pseudo secrecy once again".8. At some points in the conflict, leadership proved ineffective due to intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Captain Richard Valentine Morris, for example, is discussed at length.I am of the opinion that history ought to be taught first from a high level, to get a sense of all the major events in broad brush strokes, just to get one's bearings. Then come down to this level, skimming quickly over the entirety of US history, or whatever history you're studying. Then get into the weeds with the details of major events. Most schools start in the weeds and students struggle to get perspective. I would recommend anyone interested in learning more about American history, or for parents who have children starting to study American history, gather up a good collection short works like these and go through them in chronological order.One of the things I most appreciate about these guides, especially in this work, is that the last section explains the author's credentials in the subject area.I received a sample in exchange for an honest review.

This is a readable account of the individuals and circumstances concerning the fledgling United States and the Barbary pirates. Engrossing narrative moves you through the years of frustrations and ineptitude of our early navy. Although my impression had been that the Marines had a major role in subduing the Mediterranean pirates, Kilmeade minimizes their contribution. Since the Marine hymn memorializes the Marine role - "From The Halls of Montezuma To The Shores of Tripoli" I had the impression there was more Marine action than portrayed in the book. Indeed, diplomacy was the primary focus, enforced by meaningful shows of force by our increasing and formidable naval forces.This book is worth your attention if you are interested in U.S. history, our early Federal governing body, Thomas Jefferson, et.al, and the beginning and subsequent growth of our Naval presence on the world scene.
