good book for review before exams

Great! Especially for TCOM students!

Good book for reviewing histology important concepts. Not that good if you are looking for more specific details.

I haven't finished reading this book, yet. And I haven't taken the step 1 exam, either. However, I really like this book. So I will write a brief review now. Be the first that I can be. ;)The best part about the road map books is that it has clinical correlations. And I am surprised that there can be so many clinical correlations from the beginning of the first charpter. It is like a short review for pathology at the same time. And because of that, it made reading much more interesting than just reading basic concepts which can get boring quickly. I also like the format and wording. I just finished reading the high yield immunology, that one was so hard to read because those two authors tend to write long sentences without any coommas. This author's wording is short and easy to understand. One thing that this book needs to improve is to get more pictures. After all, it is a histology book.

I used this book as an MS1 and it got me through class- now I am going back and using it for a quick read in my Board review. Although I haven't taken the Boards yet, I believe this is the book to have for this subject. I also own the High Yield Histo but it lacks detail and BRS is way too thick to go through it for reviewing a low yield subject like Histo. If you do have the time BRS would be better but if you are like me and running out time fast- then stick to Road MapsThe above was my review prior to the Boards. Now looking back i stand by it. Histo is not a very high yield subject. So just pop this book open for two full days of studying for the Board and move on to a more significat subject such as path (which is at least 60-70% of the exam)

I used this book to review for the SHELF, and I found it very useful. I am even planning on using it as one of the resources to study for the USMLE 1. I highly recommend this book, they are short, easy to read and they have good practice questions after each chapter to test your knowledge on the subject.

Among the most intriguing gems in this work are occasional observations that this reviewer has never seen elsewhere. We have been exposed before to such points as how the direction of writing has varied from left to right and vice-versa. But how many of us knew that “the rate of [library] shelf-sag occurs proportionally to the shelf’s length, to the power of four.” The modern library designer Melvil Dewey calculated from this that optimal shelf length was thus one meter: beyond that, sagging was inevitable without reinforcement.A serious inconvenience, if not outright shortcoming, of this book is its lack of an index. The richness of the text is made less accessible not only by this oversight but also by less than intuitive titles such as “A damned sewerful of men: Renaissance Rediscoveries” (Chapter 4).

This is an engaging, wide-ranging, sometimes repetitive collection of thoughts, observations, and personal opinions regarding books, book making, libraries, book collecting, printing, paper manufacture, fictional libraries, shelving, and, especially, private libraries through the ages. If you might give some thought to dropping by on a Friday night at McCosh 10 to catch a lecture by that old slightly muddled but interesting professor from the English Department, then this could be the book for you.We start with the Great Library at Alexandria, and I more or less expected a chronological walk through the history of libraries, ending up with the usual discussion of what libraries mean now in this digital age. That is not what you get. Rather, you get a bit more than that and a bit less. Like a Dr. Who of libraries we travel around in time and place; so you might walk out of the Bodleian and into the Folger, only to then turn around and find yourself in the Vatican on your way to Pushkin's private apartment library. While the organization of the book is chaotic, and the author's sense of what's worthy of note is unique, (the Vatican's erotica collection, first web porn videoed in a library, odd things found in returned library books, number of people killed by falling over shelves), there are a few topics that we meet repeatedly. These include - descriptions of private libraries and sketches of private collectors, short histories of numerous monastic libraries, stories about famous books and manuscripts, fictional libraries, private libraries of writers, bookmaking and adornment tools and materials, and attitudes toward books over time.I enjoyed this book because it was so personal and unpredictable, but also because it is remarkably free of that creepy, maudlin, syrupy romanticism and fetishism that so often infects books about books. This Book by Kells, (not to be confused with "The Book of Kells"), is cheerful, and upbeat and inviting, and that has made all the difference.(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Call me simple, but I was hoping for pictures of beautiful libraries. There are no pictures in this book.

We are forgetting how important our free libraries are and have been. They have their own stories to tell. They have shaped our intelligence and housed our imagination.

Well-written and fascinating read. A potted history of books in all their forms, and wonderful detail about the evolution of libraries and the people who amassed libraries of books. Couldn't put it down.

My own love affair with libraries started well over half a century ago. The libraries of my youth were places of magic, of possibilities to be explored. They were also places of refuge. But what are libraries, and how have they evolved over the centuries? In this book, Stuart Kells writes about libraries (both fictitious and real) and their influence on individuals, on literature and on culture more generally.‘If a library can be something as simple as an organised collection of texts, then libraries massively pre-date books in the history of culture. Every country has a tradition of legends, parables, riddles, myths and chants that existed long before they were written down.’I remember the folk tales of my childhood. Many of them appeared in print, but some of them were part of the storytelling that is part of my Gaelic-speaking ancestry. I remember, too, reading ‘The Name of the Rose’ by Umberto Eco, and wondering exactly which books were in it. Or in Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s Cemetery of Forgotten Books. This book is full of interesting anecdotes. One of my favourites was this :‘Sir Robert Cotton was at his tailor’s shop when he saw by chance an ancient document that the tailor was about to cut up and use as a tape measure. On examination, the sheepskin parchment turned out to be an original Magna Carta—one of as few as four that King John had signed in 1215—still with ‘all its appendages of seals and signatures’ attached.’I was marginally disappointed to read, a few pages later that:‘Some of these stories of book discovery are surely apocryphal. There is considerable doubt, for example, as to whether Cotton really did find an original Magna Carta at his tailor’s shop.’But the point isn’t really whether an original Magna Carta was treated in this way, the point is that it’s possible. Sometimes the margins between fact and fiction can be blurred in a most satisfying way.Aside from the anecdotes, there’s information about the many libraries Stuart Kells has visited. There’s information about the history of recording information and its storage, including the use of tablets, papyrus and animal skins. And, eventually, mass scale printing.Like many other readers, I read both print and electronic material. I prefer print, but electronic material is often easier to access and requires less physical storage. But does the digital age pose a threat to traditional physical books, or is it simply an additional delivery mode? In the library I now use, there’s a mixture of physical and digital material. And the library has plenty of patrons.I liked this quote:‘Reading a book on screen or in microfilm was an unsatisfactory experience, like kissing a girl through a windowpane.’While I don’t know about kissing through a windowpane, I do know that books that I love are books that I want to hold. That, for me and for many others, reading is a tactile experience as well as a visual one. There’s something about the smell of books (old or new), something about the heft of a physical volume that digital copies just don’t have.I loved this book.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

An odd sounding subject that turns into a very interesting book of history! I never thought about man’s varied respect for libraries and their value until I read this book, and it turns out to be very interesting.

I am interested in the history of Libraries and this book did a good job there. The only failing was that it got a little dense in facts at the end, but the parts leading up to that held my interest.

I love Streetwise maps. The lamination is great when one is out in rainy weather. The best part is that they actually include all the streets which hotel maps do not. Having these maps has allowed us to find restaurants in neighborhoods which we would not have ever found with a less detailed map. They pack easily and fit into a jacket pocket.

Helped a lot in Vienna...main streets...labeled to help find your way...along with good metro stops labeled as well..Ps...good metro system...for great transportation to see entire Vienna and area...Vienna to get around system is great...no car needed...

Love these maps. Laminated against wet weather. Shows metro lines and major tourist sites.

Great quality. Super helpful, sturdy and essentially waterproof (as in would stay dry in a light rain.) We used it everyday.

I love Streetwise maps. They are plasticizd and you can write on them in marker and then clear it off.Anytime I take a trip, I try to get one of these maps.

Riding Buffaloes and Broncos: Rodeo and Native Traditions in the Northern Great Plains, by Allison Fuss Mellis

Review

"[Mellis] is the first to write about rodeo in the northern Great Plains in detail. She clearly presents how and why specific Indian reservations participated in rodeo and highlights the development of key gatherings such as the Crow Fair.""In vivid detail, this book tells about rodeo's place in the cultures of three northern Plains Indian nations. With its origins in government. sponsored agricultural fairs, Indian rodeo became a means of celebrating and sustaining an adapting culture. Equestrianism on the plains, itself an adaptation, became a hallmark of cultural preservation, with rodeo as one of its chief instruments."

I had to read this book for one of my M.A. classes and I must say, I didn't really enjoy it. It focused on the rodeo and how the Indians used and evolved the rodeo. Indian agents used it, according to this author, to assimilate Indians into white culture but instead it helped reinforce Indian tradition. To me, this book was dull and slow but if you are interested in the topic, then you would probably enjoy it

Foundations of Chinese Civilization: The Yellow Emperor to the Han Dynasty (2697 BCE - 220 CE) (Understanding China Through Comics), by Jing Liu

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up—This new, revised edition will help bring this award-winning series, which was originally independently published, to a much wider audience. After an introduction, which covers the major dynasties, how they rose and fell, and geography, the author provides a brief overview of the Yellow Emperor and Xia Dynasty before launching into an exploration of the Shang Dynasty (1600–1050 BCE). Liu then examines the Zhou (1046–256 BCE), Qin (221–206 BCE), and Han (202 BCE–220 CE) dynasties. The uncluttered black-and-white cartoon drawings, coupled with clear and concise explanations, are an excellent primer to early Chinese history. Focusing on broad trends, political philosophy, and the causes of each dynasty's rise and fall, this broad work is easy to understand but never oversimplified. Interested readers have a great jumping-off point for exploring more in-depth materials. Liu especially excels at clarifying the often-confusing transitional periods between dynasties. VERDICT An excellent introduction to the large trends of early Chinese history; ideal for those new to the subject.—Jennifer Rothschild, Arlington County Public Libraries, VA

#503,299 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm impressed by this book. I've read some Chinese history books before and found it fairly impossible to remember significant names and events and dynasties. Nearly 5000 years of history--how to process even a small part of all that?So I was very happy with this book which you can read in 2 - 3 hours (the longer time if you stop to look things up along the way). I finished it in one sitting and wasn't at all bored by it. I bought another copy to give to a friend who is interested in China (mainly through kung fu movies and literature like "Romance of Three Kingdoms"). He liked it, too (the next volume will begin with the "Three Kingdoms" history. I think one or more of Jet Li's movies involve that period so if you know someone interested in movies from China, about that time period, s/he may like this book, too). This is not the typical "comic book" style of drawing. It's not 6-10 small panels per page and with characters saying silly/funny things to liven it all up. But, since I find that style of writing very difficult to actually concentrate on and sift through (and, personally, don't want to waste time with the "funny" asides which most of the time aren't really that funny), this was perfect. The text--concise and to the point--is the main thing, but the illustrations (either a full page or 2 to a page) help you picture and remember what you're reading. The artwork, like the text, isn't very ornate, but I found it pleasing to look at and felt it went well with the material. In my opinion, this book was a lot of work for just one person. I'm impressed by both the writing and the art and find it an ambitious--and successful--presentation.Who is this for? That's a difficult question. The vocabulary, sentence length and level of detail is probably about a middle school reading level. However, it would probably be an unusual middle school student with the interest level in China to read through this. For "interest level needed", I would think it would more likely be "high school to adult". For me, this was actually rather nice. As an adult with a long-time interest in China (but very little knowledge about this time period--the "Foundations" of Chinese civilization), it was enjoyable that the reading level itself was so easy, allowing me to concentrate on the information itself.I think this is best as a very good overview and introduction to this period (2700 BCE to 220 CE,roughly) and would make it easy to then go on to read in more detail, concentrating on the things that particularly interested you (there's a lot. For me, it was the Qin dynasty and the development of government and cultural including the early Chinese philosophy. Hard to believe it only lasted 30 years or so. Now I can picture that in a way I couldn't just a few hours ago. Similarly, I was interested in the Han period and the major advances China made in so many areas during that time (400 years). These, and many other facts about early China are now at my fingertips thanks solely to this book.I liked the way Jing Liu included stories here and there (the one about the man who invented paper was pretty horrific)--not a lot, but a few to suggest biographical information that would be interesting to look up (including some very powerful women--not always forces for good), and the role of the military and Chinese-style feudalism, the geography that I now know a bit more about as well. I had forgotten what a role eunuchs played in some of the ancient courts--a bit of that is mentioned here as well. What was good about the text was how the author/illustrator extracted the key points/highlights and brought them to the reader's attention--not to be comprehensive, but to whet your interest and give a bit of foundation and introductory overview. If you don't look further, you'll still come away having learned quite a bit. If you want to know more, this is a nice, fun introduction.I also liked the way the graphics were used to visualize information. A timeline, of course, but other things too, like the way populations suffered attrition from each dynasty because of war, or a little illustration for the different philosophies--Confucianism, Legalism and Taoism--just a touch, but if you don't know anything about them, you'll get a taste and can go further if you want. All in all, I think this is very well done..

Seemed a bit dry to me, but my comic-obsessed 9-year-old absolutely inhaled this series. As someone who has no background, it seemed like a very thorough introductory book; I particularly liked the side topics into non-government/non-war subjects on things like important philosophical movements and arts. But as I had been familiar with Larry Gonick's history series (to say nothing of the Crash Course series), I had been expecting at least a little humor, of which there is little. On the other hand though, there was a lot of contextualization of numbers and data, which was super helpful and interesting. So, as a comic I think it fails, but as an introductory history, it succeeds. And it def. reached it's target audience, a history-obsessed 9-year-old. He made sure I pre-ordered the next in the series.. like, a couple of times.

I confess, I'm no expert in Chinese history. Not even remotely. I'm not even that into comics, and this is clearly a product of the world-wide manga era. However, what I am a fan of is Larry Gonick's work; I even used his Cartoon History of the Universe as a reference for a paper in college. Therefore, I fully approve of what Jing Liu's doing here, and Liu certainly does the tradition justice. What do you need to know about the origins of? There's a decent treatment of Chinese philosophy -- Confucianism, Taoism, The Art of War, and a number of others. The origins of the Han Chinese as a culture are of course given the bulk of the attention here, describing how they coalesced from independent groups into one of the world's early super powers. (And there's quite a lot of family drama among rulers -- some of it makes Egyptian history look calm and orderly.) Even food figures into it, fittingly as the Chinese are justifiably proud of their cuisines and their international reach. This looks to be an excellent series overall and China in general is a subject we in the west should understand much more completely. Grab this one and get started.

I purchased this book for reading at work when it gets slow. It rarely gets slow enough at work for a more comprehensive history text to be practical to use, but this is broken down in to easy to digest chunks. It is great for an adult to use as casual/light reading, but I would imagine it even better a tool for someone in their early teens to understand Chinese history. The illustrations are cute and fun, the text and information is not too dense or inaccessible and it is easy to just pick up and put down as needed.

An excellent intro to the basics of ancient Chinese history. For anyone who wants a basic outline for themselves with visuals this makes a great first read and is excellent for introducing kids to what can be a dense subject. For graphics though expect more along the lines of individual characters saying things rather than a more traditional paneled comic. This is more like heavily illustrated history book for kids than it is a true comic but it achieves it's goal of making what could be a dry subject to children much more palatable.

illustrious and illuminating and, most importantly, accurate. Jing Liu has done a great job introducing ancient Chinese history to the western public.

Great primer; fun intro to ancient Chinese history.

The history of early China in broad strokes, done in easy to read manner. My only grouse was that was too short.
