As a parent of three children with whom I've shared the application process (the last having applied to Elon) this book is fascinating if for nothing more than seeing how a college can make itself appealing to applicatnts, and how it has added value to its educational offerings. But it is also a story of how a college can execute a form of "total quality management" in its efforts to both enroll and provide an education to students. Note that this book is slightly updated version of the original http://www.amazon.com/Transforming-College-Little-Known-Strategic-Distinction/dp/0801879892/ with the current president providing an update. The book will also make the parent of a college bound student be more aware of what "non-name" schools may have to offer. I had first heard of it when a young women with a stellar background who attended our church told us she was attending there; my thinking was she could attended a much "better" school. But after learning about Elon first-hand with much research and visits with two of my children I saw how good a fit it was for her. Over the past 50 years, the book details how Elon developed offerings that fit the demographic it was targeting: Children of parents who for the most part could afford the tuition, which is value-priced when compared with other similar schools that will perhaps both set a list price higher but discount more. The book also explains how the financial policies led to the schools ability to expand and make appearance and offerings at the expense of what many consider a given for most highly rated schools - the ability to admit and provide for all students who have financial needs. Financial aid is provided, but Elon does not as of yet have the endowments of schools that have been highly regarded for longer periods so it cannot be as generous.. The book details the strategy behind the financial management that allowed Elon to progress to where it is today. The books is almost entirely about Elon to almost the exclusion of other institutions: it would have made the book more interesting (and thicker- it will take just a few hours to read) if the transformation of and offerings from Elon were compared to what other schools did. But you will understand why Elon has a very popular "parents council" that fund raises for and otherwise supports the school. I think this book should be given to the parent of every prospective student, as I could see how it could convince parents to be supporters even before their children have been admitted (as it has already sold me).So, even if you don't have a child that is thinking of attending Elon, "Transforming a College" will really give you a good idea on what it takes to improve a college to stay competitive, and will give those in the college planning process some pause to consider that a school need not have a well-known name to deliver plenty of value. I'm glad that our family has discovered Elon as it served for us as a benchmark to compare other schools against.

For anyones interested in college and university campuses, culture, and characters, this is a must read. Extremely well written and carefully explained about how a fast-fading, no-name college has morphed, with the help of a clear vision, several key strategies, and the right team of administrative and community players, from a bad news bear bunch to a high-flying attractive and quality mid-sized private university. Keller also illustrates the power of longevity when the right collection of talent is gathered and empowered with a unifying vision, a high level of risk-taking, and a terrific ... as they say in the real estate business ... location, location, location. Being in spitting proximity to the UNC/NCSU/Duke U triumverate may not be the essential ingredient to this success story, but it surely contributes mightily! Notably impressive is the very real picture of higher education financing is understandably portrayed, and how the genius of one particular financial employee has employed the concept of financial leveraging. Equally satisfying and enlightening, is how Keller vividly cautions the danger and challenges that this strategy might portend for Elon's future. In any case, it is fun watching this country clubbish campus that has aggressively attracted and retained strong "yankee" students from virtually everywhere north of North Carolina in light of Keller's expose. He warns of the very real rise of this phoenix might in the end become like Brigadoon, too. But for now, any student and parent pondering Elon MUST read this one. Lots of cheap copies available and it's a quick, enjoyable read.

I first heard of Elon when seeing its name flash across a sports ticker on ESPN. Not familiar with it I did some reading and came away intrigued. That eventually led to the purchase of this book.It is an interesting, but not fascinating read, about how this college/university is transforming itself. I have no basis of comparison to other college transformations, but from what was presented I liked the focus on making a few changes at a time; those that fit the budget and address specific needs. The Lean thinker in me could see some good prudence in that to address and what to defer. What I'm uncertain of is how much debt the school has accumulated and the ability to repay. So, only time will tell if the choices made were good ones, but so far it is looking good.If I'm ever in the area, I'm definitely going to stop by Elon and take a campus tour.

The story of Elon University, updated for the last decade. A great look at the challenges, decisions and risks undertaken to transform an undercapitalized small regional liberal arts college into a nationally ranked university in less than 2 decades. Many inspired and inspiring ideas.

This is a well known, respected, and informative chronicle of changes made at a small college, and the underlying logic and processes. While a bit dated (10 years), the fundamentals are still relevant and useful.

Very little critical analysis, nor information on faculty/trustee politics as Elon rebuilt itself. Elon is a great higher ed story, this book not so interesting.

A straightforward and insightful telling of the strategic advancement of Elon College (now University) from a small, struggling regional college to a nationally regarded, mid-sized university with bright prospects.

This book describes the transformation of Elon College in North Carolina from a "small, unattractive, parochial bottom-feeder" on the brink of fading away to an acclaimed liberal arts university with a reputation for teaching excellence, a beautiful campus, dedicated alumni, and a healthy endowment. A story of a sequence of leaders with a vision, and how they brought about the change. Short, readable, and memorable lessons
