This is underwhelming. To some extent, the dry, long paragraphs of Hunter's translation remodel the intense academic dexterity of Apollonius' original verse, but the fact remains that Apollonius is exciting, and Hunter fails to capture his energy. I recommend the Green's verse translation, which has a few problems of its own, but is genuinely a better specimen.

Very fast paced for Greek literature. Interesting references to the Danaans as being "unknown" at the time (despite other scholars claiming that is simply another name for "Greek"--obviously that may not be the case). Quick read, and decent footnotes to explain some items.

In my fairly limited experience with ALL the so-called "Western" classics, the Oxford translations are best. Not that I can read Greek or Latin, mind you: It's just that they are so much more enjoyable to read! There's an age-old debate about translations, especially poetry: some folks prefer precision and exact renditions, others want translations that capture the style and emotion. Then there are those that accomplish both goals. For my money, Oxford meets that criteria best. But what the heck do I know?

Good read, didn't enjoy the surplus of endnotes but very informative all the same. A must-read for anyone interested in Greek literature or myth.

Just a small slice of a much larger tale. This is best for a younger reader, but I'd recommend getting the complete tale (from Penguin Classics or Oxford world Classics) if you want some context and analysis.

The tales of Jason are to be in any library related to mythology. A story to revisit anitime. Nice edition.

Sheridan Voysey’s delightful new book, The Making of Us, slotted into my “unputdownable” category after I read the first few pages. This well written book tells the story of many journeys and is a fascinating read.There is the physical journey which Sheridan takes to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where his friend, DJ, joins him. The two then make a hundred mile pilgrimage on foot (mostly!) to Durham on the northeast coast of England, where the famous Lindisfarne Gospels are on display for a short while. Sheridan’s descriptions are such that I felt as if I was travelling with him—experiencing the highs and the lows along with landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes. I marveled at God’s Creation with him and met the many colorful characters Sheridan tucked into the pages.The physical and spiritual journeys of Cuthbert, the 7th century monk who was one of the first evangelists in northern England, and other saints of yore, are interwoven with Sheridan and DJ’s journey. Interesting snippets of historical detail signpost the way and add to the richness of the narrative.But the most important journeys are the spiritual journeys of Sheridan and DJ which seamlessly unfold through the walk. They seek answers to questions which we all ask at times such as: Who are we? What makes us who we are? What happens and who are we when our lives do not play out as we hoped or planned? Sheridan shares his experiences and epiphanies with us in a way which makes them relatable to our everyday lives.At the end of the book there is an invitation to take a spiritual journey of our own. This is in the form of a Bible-based refection guide for each chapter, which will help us to learn more about God’s love and our identity in Him. I look forward to accepting the invitation and taking up the challenge of working through this section as I read the book again slowly so that I can savor every page.I read this book hoping to enjoy Sheridan's writing and to learn more about drawing closer to God. It exceeded my expectations and I give it a five star rating.I received a free copy of this title, but it is my own fair and honest review.

Blending together tales from a pilgrimage, reflections on your own spiritual journey and the life story of a saint is a challenging mix most authors would struggle to coherently handle. In the hands of Sheridan Voysey, its a compelling, powerful narrative. The stories of saints made me wish I knew more history. The gorgeous, vivid description of rural England made me want to book plane tickets and take the walk myself. Most importantly, the insightful reflections on faith and the challenges of life made me want to press on with asking the big questions about my own journey. When I re-read this, it will be with a highlighter in hand to capture more of Sheridan's wise ideas and thought provoking quotes.
